How Far Should You Sit From a 75-Inch 4K TV?

Start about 7.5 feet from a 75-inch 4K TV for general viewing. Sony’s much closer 55-inch figure is a 4K minimum reference, not a universal ideal.

For a comfortable everyday setup, start about 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) from a 75-inch 4K TV. That is Samsung’s general viewing-distance recommendation. If you are asking how close 4K detail can be viewed, Sony gives a separate reference: a minimum of 55 inches (4.59 feet, about 1.4 meters). These figures answer different questions, so neither is a universal ideal.

Which distance should you use?

Use the distance that matches your goal. For ordinary room planning, begin around 7.5 feet and adjust to suit your preferred immersion, the content you watch, and the layout of the room. For a technical reference on how close a 75-inch 4K screen may be viewed, Sony’s 55-inch figure is a minimum based on screen height—not a recommended everyday sofa distance.

Reference Distance for a 75-inch 4K TV What it means
Sony 4K minimum 55 inches (4.59 feet; about 1.4 meters) Sony’s minimum-distance guidance for 4K viewing, calculated as 1.5 times the display’s vertical height. It is not a diagonal-size formula. Sony support guidance
Samsung general recommendation 2.3 meters (about 7.5 feet) A general screen-size-to-viewing-distance starting point, roughly 1.2 times the TV’s diagonal. Samsung UK guide

Do not average the two figures: they are based on different purposes. Samsung Gulf also gives 90 inches (2.3 meters) for a 75-inch TV in its regional viewing-distance guidance.

Why can 4K TVs be viewed closer?

4K screens have denser pixels than lower-resolution displays, which helps preserve image clarity at shorter distances. Samsung discusses this advantage in its UHD viewing guidance. Being able to sit closer does not mean you have to: the nearest technical reference may feel too immersive for everyday viewing, depending on your preferences and room.

How to choose your sofa distance

  1. Measure from where you sit. Estimate the distance from your seated eye position to the screen, rather than from the back wall to the TV.
  2. Start at about 7.5 feet. This is Samsung’s general recommendation for a 75-inch set and a practical baseline for room planning.
  3. Adjust for the experience you want. Move nearer if you prefer a more immersive picture and the screen remains comfortable to watch; move farther away if it feels too dominant.
  4. Check the screen angle. Aim to place the TV near seated eye level. Samsung’s guidance also addresses horizontal and vertical viewing angles; in a bedroom, a tilting wall mount can help set the angle.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you

These are manufacturer recommendations, not findings about where most people sit or guarantees of a single best position. Samsung UK’s guide, marked published in 2026, gives the 2.3-meter general recommendation; Sony’s support page gives the 55-inch 4K minimum. Your viewing distance can reasonably fall between or outside those reference points depending on comfort and placement.
