The right design depends on whether your application supports NFS, where its compute runs, what performance it actually needs, and whether your network and recovery plans fit the service. Choose a mount-target tier only after checking the workload and the tier’s capacity and billing terms.
First decide whether NFS file storage fits
OCI File Storage provides shared file-system access over NFS. A mount target is the network endpoint clients connect to; an export makes a particular file system available through that endpoint. A file system needs at least one export through a mount target before an instance can mount it. One mount target can serve multiple file systems when each has its own export. See Oracle’s File Storage overview and file-system creation guidance.

This is a fit when your application needs shared file-system semantics and its operating system and NFS client support the required configuration. Confirm client compatibility and application behavior before building around it; shared storage is not automatically the right model for every application or data-access pattern.
Place the file system with its compute
Oracle says a file system’s data resides entirely within its availability domain (AD), with synchronous replication and high-availability failover within that domain. Oracle recommends placing File Storage resources in the same AD as the compute instances that access them for optimal performance. Although a mount target can be accessed from another AD in the region, cross-AD access should not be assumed to deliver the same performance as co-location. See the OCI File Storage overview.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Plan AD placement alongside the application’s latency and resilience requirements. A file system cannot simply be moved to a different AD or region. Oracle describes using a snapshot and a separate copy operation, such as rsync, to transfer data when needed. That movement is a data-copy workflow, not a change of location for the existing file system.
Plan the network and access before provisioning
Mount targets consume subnet address space and need reachable, permitted NFS connectivity from clients. Oracle’s mount-target documentation says each target requires three IP addresses in its subnet and recommends a dedicated subnet. Allow for those addresses when sizing the subnet, and validate routing, security rules, IAM permissions, and client reachability as part of the design.

Oracle’s file-system guidance also recommends a subnet dedicated to mount targets so other resources do not consume addresses those targets may need. Before relying on the design, test the intended NFS client and operating-system configuration from the actual application network.
Choose throughput by workload, not by headline maximum
Throughput is configured at the mount-target level. Oracle documents the following read-throughput tiers and capacity entitlements in its mount-target documentation:

| Mount-target tier | Documented maximum read throughput | Capacity entitlement | Commitment and billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Up to 1 Gbps | No storage capacity entitlement | Not stated in the cited mount-target documentation |
| High Performance: 20 Gbps | Up to 20 Gbps | 20,000 GB | 30-day commitment; billed in 30-day cycles |
| High Performance: 40 Gbps | Up to 40 Gbps | 40,000 GB | 30-day commitment; billed in 30-day cycles |
| High Performance: 80 Gbps | Up to 80 Gbps | 80,000 GB | 30-day commitment; billed in 30-day cycles |
These are Oracle service-documentation maximums, not independent benchmark results or guarantees for a particular application. Oracle specifies the read-throughput figures for block sizes of at least 1 MiB and sufficient concurrency and queue depth. The published maximum may not reflect a workload with smaller I/O, fewer parallel requests, a different read/write mix, or a compute-side bottleneck. High Performance carries a 30-day commitment and is billed in 30-day cycles; check live pricing and service limits before choosing a tier.
Compare measured demand with the tier options, while considering capacity entitlement and the mount-target-wide nature of the setting. Do not treat a nominal throughput number as a promise that each client or application will achieve it.

Benchmark with application-shaped I/O
Test from the intended compute shape and network placement using representative operations, not only a large sequential-read test. Measure the read/write mix, file sizes, concurrency, metadata activity, and latency that matter to the application. Oracle’s performance troubleshooting guidance identifies compute bandwidth, latency, placement, and mount options as factors that can affect results.

rsizeandwsizevalues are generally preferable unless the application requires explicit values. Treat its tuning advice as a starting point to test, not a universal setting.
Make recovery and data movement part of the design
Within an AD, Oracle documents synchronous replication and high-availability failover. That does not, by itself, define a complete backup or disaster-recovery plan for your application. Establish the required retention, recovery-time objective, and recovery-point objective, then design and test snapshots and any separate copies needed to meet them. For a different AD or region, plan an explicit data-copy workflow; Oracle notes that snapshots and tools such as rsync can be used because a file system itself cannot be moved between those locations. See the File Storage overview.

A practical selection sequence
- Confirm NFS fit: verify that the application requires shared file-system access and supports the NFS client and operating-system setup you intend to use.
- Choose the AD: place compute and File Storage together where possible, and account for the AD boundary in the resilience plan.
- Reserve network capacity: provide a suitable subnet with three IP addresses per mount target, along with routes and security rules for client access.
- Provision the access path: create the mount target and an export for each file system that clients need to mount; grant the required IAM access.
- Measure the workload: benchmark application-like I/O from the planned compute environment and compare observed needs with the tier options.
- Confirm commercial and recovery details: check current tier pricing, limits, and commitments, then test the snapshot and copy procedures against recovery objectives.
