Choose Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice if you want a personal journey shaped around one protagonist’s perception and experience of psychosis. Choose A Plague Tale: Innocence if you want a sibling survival story about Amicia and Hugo, pursued by the Inquisition amid supernatural threats. These are recommendations based on the games’ official descriptions, not a hands-on comparison.
How the stories differ
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Xbox describes Hellblade as an action-adventure following Senua on a Viking-age vision quest. Its official description foregrounds her perception and experience of psychosis, and notes collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis. If you want a story organized around one person’s inner experience, this is the closer fit. See the Xbox listing.

A Plague Tale: Innocence
Innocence follows siblings Amicia and Hugo as they try to survive while pursued by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by supernatural rats. Focus Entertainment calls it “An original story featuring two young orphans on the run from the Inquisition.” Choose it if the sibling relationship and flight-for-survival premise appeal more than a single-protagonist journey. See Focus Entertainment’s official page.

The official descriptions support a broad distinction, not a precise mechanical ranking. Xbox presents Hellblade as an action-adventure. Focus describes Innocence as blending action and adventure, while its page for the sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, highlights choices between stealth and direct confrontation, as well as weapons, tools, and unearthly powers. If stealth-versus-combat options are a deciding factor, that description is specific to Requiem; it should not be treated as a full mechanical comparison with Hellblade. Read the official Requiem page.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of Heavenly Sword, enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and dmc: Devil may Cry, comes a warrior's brutal journey into myth and madness
- Set in the viking age, a broken celtic Warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into viking hell to fight for the soul of her Dead lover
- Created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, hellblade: senua's sacrifice will pull you deep into senua's mind
- A beautifully realized “award winning” experience
Which should you play first?
A Plague Tale: Innocence is the first game, and Requiem is its sequel. Start with Innocence if you want to follow Amicia and Hugo’s story in order; Requiem is the later chapter, not an alternative name for the first game.
