Do not infer pressure capacity from a bottle’s size, weight, color, or appearance. For growlers, use only a container specifically designed and rated for carbonated beer.
Start with the bottle type and closure
For ordinary homebrew bottling, purpose-made beer bottles with crown-cap finishes are a practical choice. The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) says glass beer bottles can be bought or reused if they are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. It cautions: “Do not use twist-off bottles, as they’re difficult to seal airtight.” A capper designed for crown caps may not seal a twist-off finish reliably.

Use new crown caps and check that their size matches the bottle. Some larger bottles require larger caps. A bottle’s familiar commercial origin or standard-looking shape does not, by itself, confirm that it is suitable for your intended pressure or closure.

Inspect, clean, and prepare bottles for reuse
Reject questionable bottles
Before cleaning, inspect each bottle for chips, cracks, scratches, or other visible damage. Set aside any bottle you doubt rather than risking its reuse. Scratches and other flaws can compromise a vessel, and a bottle brush can help remove deposits without establishing that the bottle is undamaged.

Clean first, then sanitize
Remove residue thoroughly and sanitize the bottles before filling. Cleaning and sanitizing are separate jobs: a brush can help with cleaning, but it does not replace sanitizing. The AHA’s bottling equipment list also includes a bottling bucket, spring-tip bottle-filler wand, and bottle capper.
Verify pressure suitability rather than guessing
A bottle’s pressure limit cannot be read from its appearance. The Brewers Association says package pressure specifications vary significantly by manufacturer and may depend on glass thickness, fill volume, carbon dioxide level, and temperature. Ask the bottle maker or supplier for the pressure rating and limits, then compare them with the expected pressure of your beer and its storage conditions.

Include the highest reasonable temperature the filled package might encounter, not just the temperature at which you plan to serve it. The Brewers Association warns, “It is not safe to assume your beer will always be kept cold”; a hot car or garage can expose a package to warmer conditions than a refrigerator.
Why temperature matters: a growler example
The Brewers Association’s 2022 Draught Beer Quality Manual for Retailers gives these example pressures for a sealed growler filled to 95% capacity with beer at 2.7 volumes of CO2 and 5% ABV:

These are conditional growler examples from that manual, not ratings for other growlers or ordinary bottles and not a safe target for an unrated vessel. They illustrate why a cold-storage assumption is not enough; use the manufacturer’s rating for the actual container.
Control the pressure your beer creates
Choosing an adequately rated package is only one part of managing pressure. The Brewers Association’s February 2026 over-pressurization resource identifies knowing package limits, ensuring fermentation is complete, and calculating priming additions as relevant controls. Do not bottle until fermentation is complete, and calculate priming additions for the batch rather than estimating them.

Treat growlers as a separate category
A growler should not be assumed to be a bottle-conditioning vessel. Use one only if it was specifically designed for packaged carbonated beer, and confirm with the supplier that its pressure rating equals or exceeds the pressure expected from your beer.

- Leave 5% headspace, or use the manufacturer’s fill line.
- Keep filled growlers cold; do not let them warm or freeze.
- Do not fill a growler with cracks or chips, engraved surfaces, or old, pitted, or unsmooth glass. The Brewers Association warns that these conditions can reduce pressure strength.
- After emptying, clean the growler promptly. If it will be refilled, let it drip dry upside down and uncapped.
Choose a color that protects beer from light
Brown glass and opaque vessels protect beer from light better than clear glass. If light protection matters for how or where you will store the beer, favor a dark or opaque container rather than relying on clear glass.
