How to Choose RAM Capacity for a PC, Laptop, or Workstation

A practical guide to choosing RAM for everyday computing, video editing, and workstation workloads—and checking that an upgrade fits your exact computer.

Choose RAM for the work you regularly do, not a universal “more is always better” rule. For a new general-use Windows computer, 16 GB is a practical starting point if your budget allows; 8 GB can suit light, modest use, while demanding creative work may call for 32 GB or more. Check the exact computer and software specifications before upgrading.

What RAM does—and why capacity matters

RAM is the computer’s active working memory. Apps and files are loaded from storage into RAM so the computer can access them more quickly while you work; storage, by contrast, keeps data when the computer is turned off. Having more RAM can let the computer handle more simultaneous work without slowdowns, but capacity alone does not guarantee a speed increase if your regular workload already fits. Microsoft explains the role of computer memory.

How much RAM to choose by workload

Regular workload Practical capacity guidance What the evidence establishes
Light, mostly single-purpose tasks 8 GB can be enough Microsoft’s laptop buying guide describes 8 GB as fine for light browsing and many tasks. Treat it as a constrained choice for a primary Windows computer, especially if you multitask. Microsoft Windows buying guide.
General-purpose computing 16 GB is a practical starting point for a new Windows computer when budget permits This recommendation synthesizes Microsoft’s broad 8–16 GB guidance and HP’s 2026 guide, which calls 16 GB a general standard. Neither makes 16 GB a requirement for every user. Microsoft; HP’s 2026 guide.
HD video editing in Adobe Premiere on Windows 16 GB for HD media; 8 GB minimum Adobe’s Premiere 25.x requirements list these figures for Windows. Adobe says its minimum specifications are for HD editing and its recommendations cover HD, 4K, or higher. The page was updated March 23, 2026. Adobe Premiere 25.x requirements.
4K-or-higher editing in Adobe Premiere on Windows 32 GB or more This is Adobe’s Windows specification for Premiere 25.x, not a universal requirement for all video software or systems. Adobe Premiere 25.x requirements.
Adobe Premiere on Apple silicon 16 GB unified memory recommended; 8 GB minimum Adobe lists unified memory separately for Apple silicon. Do not assume these figures map directly to the Windows discrete-memory specifications. Adobe Premiere 25.x requirements.
Heavy creative or workstation work 32–64 GB may be a reasonable range to evaluate HP’s 2026 guide recommends 32–64 GB for creative professionals. That is broad publisher guidance, not a fixed requirement for every workstation or application. Check the software, project sizes, and concurrent tasks involved. HP’s 2026 guide.

How to decide between two capacities

Compare the configurations against the work you actually expect to do. A larger number is useful when it gives your regular apps, files, and multitasking more room; the sources do not establish a universal speed improvement from extra capacity once the workload already fits.

  • Workload headroom: Account for the applications you keep open, project size and resolution, and how many tasks you run at once.
  • Upgrade path: Confirm whether the particular computer permits memory upgrades and has available slots. Some models may not be upgradeable.
  • Compatibility: Check the computer maker’s specifications for supported memory type, module format, slot count, and maximum capacity before buying. No specific kit can be assumed compatible without the exact model.
  • Cost: Weigh the price of a higher-capacity configuration against the benefit of headroom for your own workload.

Before upgrading a laptop, PC, or workstation

  1. Find the exact computer model and consult its manufacturer specifications or support page.
  2. Verify the supported memory type and physical format, maximum capacity, number of slots, and whether memory is upgradeable.
  3. Check the software maker’s requirements for the applications and project types you use. For Premiere, distinguish Windows specifications from Apple silicon unified-memory guidance.
  4. Choose a capacity that covers those requirements and your usual simultaneous tasks; do not buy a RAM kit based only on a general recommendation.

Why published recommendations differ

Broad buying advice is not a single industry-wide minimum. Microsoft’s support page recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term and says 16 GB or more may fit photo/video editing or high-performance projects. Its buying guide gives a broad 8–16 GB range for general use and points closer to 16 GB for photo or video editing. HP’s 2026 guide describes 16 GB as its general standard and 32–64 GB for creative professionals. These are publisher recommendations; application-specific requirements, such as Adobe’s Premiere figures, are more useful when they match your software and platform.
