Alan Wake 2 shifts decisively toward survival horror, with slower stretches of tension and a parallel story starring Saga Anderson. It is a strong fit for fans open to that change, but not a straightforward sequel for anyone looking mainly for more of the 2010 game’s combat rhythm.
What feels familiar—and what changes?
Alan Wake 2 retains qualities many Remedy fans seek: self-aware storytelling, unusual narrative structures, and a mix of media. It also expands beyond Alan’s perspective: Saga Anderson has a substantial story alongside his, and the game moves between two distinct dimensions.

The major shift is genre. Remedy describes the sequel as survival horror, aiming to bind horror, story, atmosphere, pacing, and gameplay more closely than in earlier games. That is a statement of creative intent, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the result. PC Gamer’s review characterizes the experience as long quiet stretches punctuated by short bursts of violence—a useful indication of its pacing, rather than a promise about how it will feel to you.
If your favorite Remedy qualities are atmosphere, strange narrative turns, and connections among stories, the sequel has clear appeal. If you most enjoyed the original’s action-thriller structure, expect a real tonal and mechanical departure rather than a simple upgrade.

Do you need to play Alan Wake, Control, or AWE first?
No. Remedy’s official Alan Wake 2 FAQ treats the original Alan Wake and Control—including its AWE expansion—as optional context, not prerequisites.
If you want the most relevant story context
Play Alan Wake Remastered first. The original is the most directly useful predecessor for Alan’s continuing story and the Dark Presence.

If you want more of the connected universe
Control and its AWE expansion add context about the Federal Bureau of Control and its links to Alan Wake. Remedy has described the games as part of the same fictional universe and said AWE set up Alan Wake 2. Treat these games as optional extra depth, not homework required to follow the sequel.
