How to Choose Rack Power Distribution for High-Density GPU Servers

A practical sequence for matching rack PDU capacity, power feeds, outlets, and monitoring to high-density GPU servers and the facility that supports them.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a rack PDU only after you know the servers’ electrical requirements, the facility supply, the rack’s normal and failure-case loads, and the connectors and outlets the equipment needs. No voltage, phase, or current rating is right for every GPU rack, and a PDU’s label alone does not establish how much load the rack can safely support.

Use this sequence: establish the load and failure scenario, confirm the available facility power, size the feeds and distribution with qualified electrical personnel, match the physical interfaces, choose only the monitoring and control features operations needs, and verify the complete upstream path before energizing the rack.

How do I choose rack power distribution for high-density GPU servers?

Start with the exact server configuration and the facility’s actual electrical service—not with a preferred PDU model or a current rating in isolation. A suitable choice has to satisfy the server power supplies, the site supply, protection and distribution limits, the required failure behavior, and the rack’s outlet and installation needs at the same time.

  1. Document the equipment and load cases. Record the server models, power-supply specifications, expected rack population, other rack equipment, and the expected load both in normal operation and under the failure condition the design must survive. Keep a design maximum distinct from an operating estimate.
  2. Confirm the source available at the rack. Ask facilities for the actual voltage, phase arrangement, current rating, protective devices, input connector, and source type, such as a floor PDU or busway tap.
  3. Design the distribution and redundancy. Establish how each server power supply connects to each feed, what must remain powered after a failure, and whether every upstream segment can carry the resulting load.
  4. Match every interface and installation constraint. Check outlet and inlet types, ratings, counts, cord reach, rack dimensions, cable routing, and service access against the hardware list.
  5. Select operational features. Decide whether basic distribution, metering, remote monitoring, outlet switching, or a transfer solution is justified by the deployment and operations plan.
  6. Validate the whole design before energizing. Have qualified electrical and facilities personnel check calculations, protection, phase balance, upstream capacity, and the intended failure response.

Schneider Electric’s January 19, 2024 white paper presents rack power selection as a five-step process and addresses high-density AI training loads. Raritan’s selection guidance likewise begins with infrastructure voltage, circuits, phase, and amperage. Use manufacturer guidance to frame the questions, then verify the exact model, rating, and regional connector variant against the facility design and current product documentation.

How do I size rack PDU capacity and redundancy?

Calculate for the real load, not current alone

Collect the server and power-supply specifications and agree with the project team on rack population and the design growth allowance. Assess the normal case and the relevant failure case; an operating estimate or a nameplate value by itself may not describe the load the distribution must support.

Current cannot be translated into usable rack capacity without considering voltage, phase, power factor, protective-device limits, continuous-load rules applicable to the installation, and the PDU’s own rating. Do not infer a rack’s safe power capacity from an amperage label alone or apply an unsupported generic growth percentage. A qualified designer should perform and review calculations under the local electrical requirements.

Trace every redundant path to its source

Map the server power supplies to the rack PDUs and trace each PDU feed upstream through its protective devices and any room PDU, UPS, generator, or busway arrangement. Look for shared junctions or other common points where paths that appear separate converge. Confirm that each segment can carry the load required in the specified failure case.

Two PDUs do not automatically provide 2N redundancy. Source diversity, upstream capacity, protection, server power-supply behavior, and how the load is distributed determine what remains powered when a circuit, PDU, or source fails.

For its documented DGX H100 architecture, NVIDIA requires separate power sources for rack PDUs. In the guide’s three-path N+1 pattern, each path must support half the expected peak rack power; a shared upstream junction still has to be sized for the full downstream rack peak. Those requirements describe that NVIDIA design, not a generic three-feed rule for other GPU systems.

NVIDIA also recommends testing redundancy during commissioning by switching off individual feed breakers. Plan such checks with qualified personnel and an approved procedure; the expected result should be established for the actual equipment and facility design.

Should a high-density GPU rack use three-phase power?

Three-phase power can be an appropriate fit for a high-density rack, but the choice depends on the supply available at the site and the server requirements. Confirm whether the facility provides a delta or wye arrangement, its voltage and current, the protective devices and connector, and whether the equipment accepts that supply. Then select compatible distribution and verify phase mapping and load balance.

NVIDIA’s DGX H100 SuperPOD electrical design guide says: “The preferred power for high-density deployment patterns is 415 VAC, 32A, three-phase, N+1.” This is NVIDIA’s preferred arrangement for the DGX H100 deployment patterns described in that guide—not a universal recommendation for GPU racks. The same guide gives examples that include 208 V three-phase delta and 400/415 V three-phase wye, and says densities above four DGX H100 systems per rack are not recommended for thermodynamic reasons. Apply those examples only to the documented DGX H100 context; another server, rack, or site may require a different design.

Do not choose a PDU just because its voltage, phase, or current appears to match one of these examples. Confirm the server’s accepted input, facility supply, connector variant, protection, and complete path as a coordinated design.

What outlets, input connector, and form factor does the rack need?

Build an interface list from every power inlet to be connected, including server power supplies and other rack devices. Match that list to the PDU input and outlets before selecting a model. A connector that fits physically is not by itself proof that its electrical rating or circuit arrangement is suitable.

  • Input: Verify connector type and rating against the facility feed, including any busway tap-off interface.
  • Outputs: Check outlet count, connector type, outlet ratings, branch protection, breaker arrangement, and phase mapping against the server cords and other equipment.
  • Physical fit: Confirm horizontal or vertical mounting, rack width and depth, mounting space, cable routes, cord reach, and access to server service points.
  • Operations and airflow: Ensure cabling and PDU placement work with cable management, rear access, and the rack’s airflow and maintenance needs.

NVIDIA notes that rack depth and cable management can make horizontal PDUs necessary; its guide describes vertical 0U units as an option when rack dimensions and rear access permit. It also emphasizes outlet mapping for phase and load balancing. Raritan’s guidance treats device count and feed arrangement as factors in PDU configuration and form factor. These are design considerations, not a substitute for checking the actual rack and hardware.

Which monitoring and control features are useful?

Choose features to support the facility’s operating model. Metering can show load, monitoring can make electrical conditions visible, and managed models can add remote outlet switching or monitoring. Environmental sensors may also fit an operational requirement. These capabilities do not replace properly designed redundant feeds.

Option What it provides When to consider it
Basic distribution Power outlets without the metering, remote monitoring, or switching features described for more capable models When the operating plan does not require those additional functions
Metered or monitored PDU Visibility into load or power conditions; exact monitoring features vary by model When operations needs rack or outlet-level visibility
Managed or switched PDU Remote monitoring and, on switched models, remote outlet control When remote visibility or outlet control is part of the support plan
Automatic transfer switch PDU Automatic selection between two sources for a connected single-corded device, subject to load and transfer compatibility When a single-corded device needs access to two sources

Eaton’s buying guide distinguishes managed units with remote outlet switching and monitoring from automatic transfer switch PDUs that support redundant sources for single-corded devices. NVIDIA calls for remote power monitoring with API capability and rack temperature and humidity monitoring in its SuperPOD architecture. Treat those as features of the cited designs, not requirements for every GPU rack. Check the exact model’s feature set and confirm that any transfer solution is compatible with the load and sources.

What should be checked before the rack is energized?

Review the complete deployment rather than approving the rack PDU in isolation. The commissioning review should connect the electrical calculations, equipment interfaces, and failure plan to the actual installed feeds.

  • Confirm the server population, power-supply specifications, other rack loads, design maximum, and required failure case.
  • Verify facility voltage, phase, current, source type, input connector, and protective devices against the selected PDU’s documentation and regional variant.
  • Check PDU and branch ratings, outlet types and counts, phase mapping, load balance, and the applicable local electrical requirements.
  • Trace each path through upstream distribution and identify common points; verify capacity where paths converge.
  • Confirm cable lengths and routing, busway or floor-feed interfaces, rack dimensions, mounting, and service clearances.
  • Agree on a qualified-personnel commissioning procedure, including how the specified feed-failure behavior will be checked.

Only qualified electrical and facilities personnel should validate the calculations, protection, phase balance, upstream feeds, and redundancy before energization. Resolve mismatches between server requirements, PDU documentation, and the facility source before connecting the rack.
