There is no single best PC settings preset for every survival horror game. Start with the requirements for the specific game and the capabilities of your PC and monitor; then adjust settings in small steps, checking image quality and frame-rate stability during actual gameplay.
Start with the game and your PC
A survival-horror label does not tell you whether your system can run a particular game well. Check that game’s current minimum and recommended PC requirements before choosing graphics settings. Capcom warns that falling below Resident Evil 4’s minimum requirements can lead to poor frame rates or prevent the game from running; for a PC that meets minimum but not recommended specifications, its guidance is to lower graphics settings. Capcom’s troubleshooting guide was last updated on July 20, 2026.

Before making changes, note the game version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, system memory, operating-system and driver versions, display resolution, and monitor refresh rate. These details help you compare your setup with requirements and describe a problem accurately. Laptop and integrated graphics deserve particular care: Capcom notes in its Resident Evil Village support guide that some such graphics may work but are not tested or officially supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMatch resolution and refresh rate to your display
Use resolution and refresh-rate values that both the game and your display support. They are display controls, not universal graphics recommendations: the right choices depend on the screen you already use, including its gaming monitor refresh rate. Capcom’s PC graphics settings FAQ also notes that how noticeable a graphics-setting difference is can depend on the user’s environment.

Find a stable starting point
Start with the game’s defaults or a suitable preset, then change one setting—or a small group of related settings—at a time. Check the result in a demanding gameplay area as well as in quieter scenes; a menu or calm room may not reveal performance dips that occur during more complex play. Keep the test conditions consistent so you can tell whether a change helped.
Prioritize performance that feels acceptably consistent over a peak frame-rate reading. If the frame rate is unstable, reduce demanding graphics settings and repeat the check. Capcom gives this advice for Resident Evil 4 players whose systems fall short of recommended specifications, and says most graphics changes in that game require a restart to take effect. Restart when needed before judging the result.

Balance visual detail against performance
Resolution, shadows, reflections, ray tracing, and path tracing can affect both the image and performance, but their impact varies by game and hardware. Consider each option by asking whether its visual benefit is noticeable on your display, whether performance stays stable in play, and whether your PC supports it. Your preference matters too: a smoother presentation, sharper image, or more elaborate lighting may be more important to you.

In a 2026 analysis of Resident Evil Requiem, PC Gamer hardware writer Nick Evanson reported 157 fps with High ray tracing and 77 fps with path tracing on an RTX 5090 test PC. Those results apply to that game and test setup; they do not predict performance in another horror game or on another GPU. The figures illustrate a possible trade-off, not a universal cost for ray tracing or path tracing. PC Gamer’s Resident Evil Requiem PC performance analysis was published February 27, 2026.

Treat display faults separately
Flickering or a blank screen is not the same problem as low frame rate or excessive graphics detail. For those display symptoms in Resident Evil 4, Capcom advises checking vertical synchronization (V-sync) and refresh-rate settings. Change those controls separately from image-quality options so you can identify what resolves the fault.

A repeatable settings check
- Record your setup. Note the game and version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, memory, operating system, driver, resolution, and monitor refresh rate.
- Check the game’s requirements. Compare your PC with the specific title’s current minimum and recommended specifications; do not assume similarly named laptop and desktop GPUs are equivalent.
- Set supported display values. Choose a resolution and refresh rate supported by your monitor and the game.
- Establish a baseline. Begin with default settings or an appropriate preset and play through a demanding area.
- Adjust in small steps. Lower demanding options if performance is unstable, then repeat the same gameplay check. Restart if the game requires it for changes to apply.
- Test advanced lighting on its own merits. Try ray tracing or path tracing only if your hardware supports it and you value the visible effect enough to assess its performance cost.
- Keep notes if troubleshooting. Record which settings you changed and where or when the problem occurs; this makes comparisons and support requests more useful.
