Change one graphics setting at a time, then compare the same repeatable moment in the game. Start by noting when the hitch happens and what settings you use; measure frame-time behavior as well as average FPS if your game or graphics software provides it. Lowering visual quality can help, but no single setting or preset fixes every kind of stutter.
First, identify what the slowdown looks like
“Stutter” can describe different symptoms: a brief hitch, uneven motion, persistently low frame rates, or screen tearing. The distinction matters because lowering image quality may help when rendering workload is the problem, but it will not necessarily resolve a game-specific issue, shader compilation, or a system that is reducing performance for another reason.

Write down the game, the location or action where the problem occurs, your resolution and graphics preset, and whether the hitch happens again when you repeat the same action. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance for common game issues recommends documenting and reproducing symptoms; those details can also help you compare changes fairly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEstablish a baseline you can repeat
Use an in-game performance display or a reporting tool supported by your graphics hardware, if available. Record the result during the same scene or gameplay segment before changing anything. Average FPS is useful, but it can hide short interruptions; frame-time behavior can make uneven delivery easier to notice.

AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor can report average FPS, a 95th-percentile frame-processing measure, and frame-time graphs, and its report can be run again after adjustments. Availability depends on the software, supported hardware, and game. Treat the report as a comparison aid, not as a universal pass/fail target.
Adjust graphics quality one option at a time
Begin with a broad preset comparison if that is the simplest option in your game, then test individual settings. Intel’s low-frame-rate guidance names shadows, reflections, and lighting as options to turn down. AMD’s Game Advisor guidance also identifies antialiasing, ambient occlusion, render scale, and resolution as possible adjustments. The impact varies by game and system, so there is no evidence-backed universal order for changing them.

- Choose one setting. For a broad first comparison, try the next lower quality preset. For a more controlled test, change one exposed option such as shadows, reflections, lighting, antialiasing, or ambient occlusion.
- Replay the same situation. Compare the same scene or action with the same performance display, where available.
- Keep or undo the change. If performance improves but the image quality is not acceptable, restore the setting or make a smaller adjustment, then test a different option.
- Test render scale or resolution separately. Lowering either may improve performance, but it also reduces image detail or sharpness. Judge whether the visual cost is worthwhile in the game you play.
Intel’s recommendations are scoped to Intel Graphics, and AMD’s suggestions describe features of its own software; they are useful candidates rather than promises that a setting will help on every GPU. Use the options your game actually exposes, and make only one change between comparisons.
Check synchronization separately from image quality
VSync is not another detail slider. It synchronizes a game’s frame output with a display’s refresh rate and is principally used to address screen tearing. Intel explains that disabling it can make tearing, jerkiness, or stuttering more likely in some configurations. AMD describes Enhanced Sync as an alternative synchronization mode; supported choices and behavior depend on the display, game, driver, and hardware.

If the visible problem is tearing, test the game’s own VSync option and compare the result. If you are deciding between VSync, Enhanced Sync, or another available mode, change only that setting and check both motion smoothness and responsiveness. Neither enabling nor disabling synchronization is a guaranteed fix for every frame drop.

When the same hitch remains after a controlled settings comparison, look beyond visual quality. Intel’s support guidance recommends checking whether the game developer or system maker has reported the issue. Other checks suggested by the vendor sources include:

- Game or system updates: Check for relevant updates to the game, graphics driver, and operating system. Electronic Arts’ PC graphics troubleshooting guidance also suggests checking Windows updates and background apps.
- Laptop GPU selection: If your laptop has integrated and discrete graphics, verify that the game is using the dedicated GPU when appropriate. EA notes that graphics options and the steps to change them vary by game; some changes may require a restart.
- Thermal throttling: Intel identifies thermal throttling as a possible performance factor. If slowdowns emerge after the system has been under load, investigate cooling and temperatures rather than assuming another graphics-quality reduction will solve the cause.
- Shader compilation or game-specific behavior: NVIDIA’s system latency guide identifies shader compilation as a common source of gameplay stuttering. The pattern can depend on the game, so check that game’s support information before treating every hitch as a graphics-settings problem.
