Can Your Antivirus Software Slow Your Internet Speed?

Antivirus scans and specific network-protection conflicts can affect performance, but slow pages, downloads, speed tests, and a sluggish PC are different symptoms. Here’s how to narrow down the cause without leaving protection off.

Yes, antivirus software can sometimes make browsing or network activity feel slower, but that does not mean it routinely reduces your internet plan’s speed. Scans can use your computer’s processor and memory, and a particular network-protection feature can cause connection trouble in specific environments. To find the cause, separate slow web pages or downloads from a slow speed-test result and from a computer that feels sluggish.

What does “slow internet” mean in your case?

These symptoms point to different things, so identify what is actually taking longer before changing security settings.

  • Low speed-test results: measured network throughput is lower than expected. That alone does not establish that antivirus is responsible.
  • Slow page loading: a website takes longer to appear. Page loading can be affected by the browser, device, network, or security software; it is not the same measurement as raw connection throughput.
  • Slow downloads: a download task takes longer. Performance tests may measure the time to download files, but that is not a direct measure of every household’s broadband speed.
  • A sluggish computer: apps respond slowly or the whole device feels busy. A scan using processor and memory resources can affect responsiveness even if the internet connection itself is fine.

Microsoft says, “Scanning takes system resources like processor and memory.” Its guidance recommends running scans while the PC is idle and closing unnecessary programs. Microsoft’s malware-detection and removal guidance and Defender’s scan documentation also describe scan scheduling, CPU throttling, and lower CPU priority for scheduled scans.

When can antivirus affect a connection?

During scans or other resource-heavy activity

A manual or scheduled scan can compete with other programs for system resources. If the slowdown starts while a scan or large download is running, let the scan finish while the computer is idle and close programs you do not need. That is a safer first step than turning off real-time protection.

In a specific managed Windows environment

Microsoft documents an enterprise scenario in which a network-protection component “might slow down connections to Domain Controllers or Exchange servers.” This is guidance for administrators troubleshooting Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Network Protection, not evidence that antivirus generally slows home Wi-Fi or broadband. For a reproducible problem in a managed environment, an IT administrator can use audit mode or temporarily disable Network Protection to isolate the cause, then test components one at a time. Ordinary users should not leave security protections turned off as a speed fix.

Check other likely causes before blaming antivirus

Microsoft’s slow-connection troubleshooting guidance lists several possible causes beyond antivirus:

ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem | Up to 1 Gbps Plans
  • Multi‑Gig speed for today & tomorrow: DOCSIS 3.1 performance supports cable internet plans up to 2 Gbps, delivering ultra‑fast streaming, gaming, and downloads.
  • Save on rental fees: Own your modem and avoid monthly equipment charges—check with your cable provider for plan compatibility.
  • Compact, modern design: Space‑saving footprint with discrete LED indicators for power, upstream/downstream, and online status.
  • Easy setup: Connect cable, power on, and activate with your cable provider. Then connect a Wi‑Fi router to the Ethernet port for home Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Modem only: This cable modem requires a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system for home Wi-Fi network.
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal due to router placement, distance, walls, or other obstructions.
  • Wireless interference or local network congestion.
  • Other applications using the connection or consuming device resources.
  • Limited available memory or disk capacity, or malware.
  • Corporate network, proxy, or usage conditions.

A useful comparison is to check another device on the same network, then compare the affected computer over Wi-Fi and, if practical, a wired connection. If several devices are slow, investigate the network or internet service before focusing on one device’s antivirus. If only one computer is affected, check its running apps, resource use, Wi-Fi conditions, and scan activity. A wired comparison is a diagnostic, not a guarantee or a fix for antivirus problems.

How to test whether antivirus is involved

  1. Note the symptom. Record whether the issue is a low speed-test result, slow page loading, slow downloads, or general device sluggishness.
  2. Compare devices. Test another device on the same network under similar conditions. If practical, compare the affected PC’s Wi-Fi with a wired connection.
  3. Check timing and workload. See whether the slowdown coincides with an active or scheduled scan, a large download, or several demanding programs. Let scans run while the computer is idle and close unnecessary programs.
  4. Look for network and device causes. Check Wi-Fi signal and interference, other applications, and available system resources before attributing the problem to antivirus.
  5. For managed Defender environments, involve IT. If there is a repeatable connection problem involving Network Protection, an administrator can follow Microsoft’s audit-mode or component-isolation guidance. Do not use this enterprise troubleshooting step as routine home advice.

A single speed test cannot identify the cause. Compare like with like: same device, network, location, and workload. Avoid disabling real-time protection as a routine test; it can expose the device without establishing that antivirus caused the slowdown.

What performance comparisons can—and cannot—tell you

Independent testing can help compare named products under controlled conditions, but results are not a promise about a particular household connection. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance report tested 20 consumer security products under default settings on Windows 11 64-bit, using a low-end Intel Core i3 system with 8 GB RAM and an SSD. Its activities included file downloading, website loading, and local tasks. The report says findings apply to the stated product versions and conditions, are indicative, and may not apply in all circumstances. See the April 2026 performance test and its methodology and FAQ.

In one April 2026 UL Procyon comparison, AV-Comparatives assigned a score of 100 to the no-security-software baseline on its Intel Core i3, 8 GB RAM, SSD system, and 97.1 to Microsoft Defender. Those are benchmark system-performance scores—not internet speeds. The 2.9-point difference must not be read as a 2.9% reduction in broadband throughput.

  • 🔌 MODEM ONLY - NO WIFI INCLUDED - This device is a cable modem with ONE Ethernet port only. It does NOT provide WiFi or wireless connectivity. You MUST connect your own separate WiFi router to this modem to create a wireless network. This is not an all-in-one gateway or combo unit.
  • ⚡ DOCSIS 3.1 TECHNOLOGY: Latest cable standard with 32x8 channel bonding for reliable multi-gig speeds. Backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 networks. Eliminates monthly modem rental fees (typically $14-20/month). For CABLE internet only - verify compatibility with your cable provider.

There is no general percentage established here for how much antivirus slows household internet speed. When comparing products, check the exact product version, operating system and device capability, settings, whether a scan was active, and which activity was measured. Performance results also do not measure protection effectiveness. AV-Comparatives cautions, “We do not recommend choosing an antivirus product solely on the basis of low performance impact, as it must provide effective protection too.”
