Choose by what you want to do after leaving the main road—not by map size alone. Compare a game’s exploration, freedom to choose your approach, way of moving through the world, and central activity. If you want discovery, consider The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; for exploration paired with demanding RPG combat, Elden Ring; for a choice-driven science-fiction city, Cyberpunk 2077; or for space exploration and survival, No Man’s Sky.
What should you compare beyond “open world”?
“Open world” describes a broad structure, not what you will spend most of your time doing. A useful design framework highlights exploration, autonomy and traversal as recurring elements of open-world games; the experience also depends on the central activity, setting, tone, combat and survival systems. Davern and Haahr discuss these design elements in their 2023 paper on open-world gameplay.

- Exploration: What draws you away from the obvious route, and what can you find there? Some games emphasize discovery, clues or collectibles; others make exploration part of a larger survival or combat challenge.
- Autonomy: How much control do you have over the order of objectives, your approach or how you solve a problem?
- Traversal: What does moving through the world involve? The movement options and terrain can shape the experience as much as the map’s size.
- Primary activity: Are you mainly discovering, fighting, role-playing, surviving or following a story?
- Setting and tone: A fantasy landscape, a science-fiction city and a procedurally generated universe offer different kinds of places to inhabit.
Start with the activity and setting you want. Then check whether the game’s combat, movement and level of player choice suit you.
Which game fits the experience you want?
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: discovery and exploration
Nintendo presents Breath of the Wild as an adventure centered on discovery and exploration, making it a fit if you want the world itself to invite wandering. Nintendo also describes an upgraded version playable on Nintendo Switch 2 with improved visuals and performance. Check the regional listing, platform and edition before buying; the upgrade detail should not be assumed to describe every version. See Nintendo’s official Breath of the Wild page.
#1 Best Overall
Elden Ring: exploration alongside RPG combat
Bandai Namco identifies Elden Ring as an open-world game and emphasizes exploration, discovery and role-playing freedom. Choose it if you want roaming to sit alongside RPG play and dangerous encounters, rather than treating the world as a relaxed sightseeing route. Its official descriptions do not establish it as an easy or restful option. See Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring site and explainer.
Cyberpunk 2077: a choice-driven science-fiction city
Cyberpunk 2077 centers on Night City, a dense science-fiction setting where player choices shape the story and the people around the protagonist. It suits readers drawn to an urban world and story decisions. It is still a city-based action-adventure, so a different setting does not necessarily mean a wholly different set of broad genre elements. See CD PROJEKT RED’s official Cyberpunk 2077 page.

- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
No Man’s Sky: exploration and survival in a generated universe
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as exploration and survival in a procedurally generated galaxy; Nintendo’s official listing also describes its Switch version as exploration and survival in a procedurally generated universe. It is the clearest fit here if you want space exploration and survival systems rather than a single grounded city. Hello Games uses “infinite” as part of its description; that is the developer’s framing, not a literal measurable guarantee. Check the listing for your platform and region. See Hello Games’ official No Man’s Sky press page and Nintendo’s official Switch listing.

How to make the choice
- Pick the main activity. Choose discovery, combat-rich role-playing, story choices or exploration with survival.
- Choose a setting. Decide whether you want a fantasy world, a science-fiction city or a generated universe.
- Check the kind of freedom you mean. Want to decide where to go, how to solve problems, or how to shape a story? Those are distinct kinds of player choice.
- Account for combat and challenge. If you want to explore without dangerous encounters, do not assume that an open map promises a relaxed experience.
- Verify platform and edition. Confirm that the specific listing matches your console, region and desired version, especially when a page describes an upgrade or a particular platform release.
