Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a code scanner by deciding which risks you need it to detect, then testing language and framework coverage, analysis depth, developer workflow, privacy, licensing, and triage effort on your own repositories. There is no universal winner: Semgrep Community Edition, CodeQL with GitHub code scanning, and focused analyzers such as Bandit, Brakeman, and gosec suit different needs. Pilot candidates before making their findings a blocking merge requirement.
Start by defining what you need scanned
“Code scanning” can refer to several different security checks. A tool that analyzes source code is not automatically a dependency scanner, secret detector, infrastructure-as-code checker, or dynamic testing system. Treat these as separate requirements and confirm that each candidate and edition actually covers the categories your team needs.

Source-code analysis (SAST)
Static application security testing examines source code without running the program. Its methods differ: some analyzers match patterns, while others model program behavior or trace data flows. Two tools can both be called SAST and still detect different classes of issues, require different configuration, and return findings with different context.
Dependency analysis and other categories
Software composition analysis (SCA) looks at third-party components for risks or policy violations, often using manifests and lockfiles. Secrets scanning looks for credentials and other sensitive strings; infrastructure-as-code checks inspect deployment definitions; dynamic testing examines a running application. Semgrep’s project distinguishes its Community Edition from a platform offering SAST, SCA, and secrets capabilities, so do not assume the free edition covers every category. Verify the precise product edition and workflow for each requirement.

Make a short written scope before comparing tools: for example, “find insecure source-code patterns in Python and Rails, report on pull requests, and keep source code inside our CI environment.” That statement prevents a broad feature list from obscuring a missing must-have.
Compare the candidates by their actual boundaries
The following options represent different approaches, not equivalent products. Coverage and analysis depth should be validated against your code and the current documentation. OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance identifies Bandit as Python-focused, Brakeman as Rails-specific, gosec as a Go analyzer, and CodeQL as covering several major languages.
| Candidate | Best-fit role | Established characteristics | Boundary to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semgrep Community Edition | Local or CI rule-based analysis, including custom rules | Semgrep’s official documentation describes CE as LGPL 2.1 licensed; it can analyze local or SCM code and emit terminal, SARIF, or JSON results. | Its project warns that CE security analysis is limited to a single function or file and can miss true positives that require broader analysis. |
| CodeQL with GitHub code scanning | Query-based analysis with repository alerts in GitHub | GitHub supports scheduled or event-triggered scans and alert management; its code-scanning workflow can also accept third-party SARIF results. | Check exact language coverage, workflow setup, and licensing. GitHub documents that code scanning for private repositories requires a Code Security license. |
| Bandit | Focused analysis of Python code | OWASP lists Bandit as Python-focused. | Do not treat a language-specific analyzer as broad polyglot coverage; validate the frameworks and checks relevant to your application. |
| Brakeman | Focused analysis of Ruby on Rails applications | OWASP lists Brakeman as Rails-specific. | Its stated focus is not a substitute for coverage of other languages or application types. |
| gosec | Focused analysis of Go code | OWASP lists gosec for Go. | Confirm that its checks address the team’s frameworks and security cases; do not infer cross-language coverage. |
The table is a shortlist, not a feature parity chart. The available documentation does not establish comparable detection rates, false-positive rates, scan speeds, or operational costs for these candidates. Nor does the list prove that each one fits every repository in a team’s portfolio.

Evaluate language coverage and analysis depth
Match support to production code
Start with the repositories that matter most: list their languages, frameworks, build patterns, and architecture. A headline language count is not enough. Check whether the scanner understands the framework conventions your code uses, whether the required language support is available in the edition you intend to run, and whether the scan actually reaches the relevant files in your build.

Include representative repositories rather than selecting only the easiest one. A team with several stacks may need a general analyzer for common coverage plus specialist tools for a critical language or framework. That adds another ruleset, result stream, and maintenance path, so the extra tool is worthwhile only if the specialist checks address a meaningful gap.
Ask what context the analysis can follow
Detection depth matters when a vulnerability depends on how data moves through a program. Ask whether the analyzer can follow relevant flows across functions, files, or dependencies, and test that claim with examples from your application. Semgrep CE’s documented function-or-file boundary is a concrete constraint: a finding that requires broader context may be missed. OWASP characterizes CodeQL as offering deeper dataflow analysis, with slower but more thorough analysis as a tradeoff.
Deeper analysis is not automatically the better fit for every workflow. A team may value fast feedback during development, broader checks on a scheduled run, or different settings for pull requests and full-repository scans. Measure the scan time and useful results under the workflow you expect to operate rather than assuming that one configuration must serve every purpose.
Judge rule quality by what your team can maintain
Built-in rules are a starting point, not a guarantee that the scanner understands your conventions. Review examples of findings in the frameworks you use, the context provided to explain them, and any remediation guidance. Semgrep CE uses rules and can emit findings with remediation advice; its official documentation also describes custom rules.

Custom rules can close gaps specific to your application, but they create ongoing work. Ask who will write and review them, how they will be tested against existing code, and how changes will be maintained as frameworks and application patterns evolve. A rule that produces too many irrelevant alerts can erode trust just as readily as a missing check.
- Choose a small set of realistic security cases drawn from your codebase.
- Check whether existing rules detect them and whether the result explains the risky code path.
- Try a few team-relevant custom rules and review their behavior against both intended matches and nearby non-matches.
- Decide how rule changes, exceptions, and ownership will be reviewed over time.
Fit results into the developer workflow
A useful finding must reach the person who can act on it. Decide where scans should run—locally, in an IDE, in CI, on pull requests, or on a schedule—and how developers will inspect, assign, suppress, and resolve alerts. GitHub documents scheduled and event-triggered code scanning and alert management. It also accepts SARIF output from third-party tools, which can let a team use another analyzer while keeping results in a GitHub code-scanning workflow.
Semgrep CE can emit SARIF as well as terminal and JSON output. During a pilot, check whether the chosen output preserves the details developers need and whether results map cleanly to the relevant source locations. Integration is not just “the job passes”: examine how a finding appears in the review context, who owns it, and what happens when it is fixed or judged not applicable.

A scanner can first report findings without blocking changes; after the team understands its output and exceptions, selected checks can become a gate. Set the gate only after deciding what counts as a failure, who can approve an exception, and how existing findings will be handled. Otherwise, a noisy or poorly scoped check can interrupt development without improving security decisions.

Check privacy, licensing, and edition boundaries
Know what leaves your environment
Review data handling for the exact scan mode you plan to use. Semgrep’s repository says code is analyzed locally by default and is not uploaded. That statement is specific to the documented behavior; verify it against the edition, configuration, and deployment model your team will use. Also consider what CI logs, alert payloads, telemetry, or uploaded artifacts contain, rather than checking source-code transfer alone.
Confirm what “open source” covers
Separate the scanner’s license from the terms for hosted dashboards, private-repository integrations, advanced analysis, rules, and dependency features. Semgrep CE’s documented license is LGPL 2.1, but the Community Edition should not be described as equivalent to Semgrep’s paid platform. GitHub documents a Code Security license requirement for code scanning in private repositories. Check current terms for your repository type and intended workflow before committing to a design.
Likewise, verify the license and feature boundaries of every specialist tool you shortlist. The fact that an analyzer appears in an open-source security guide does not settle whether every related service, integration, or capability you plan to use is available under the terms you need. Product features and licensing can change; rely on current official documentation for the decision.

Measure operational cost, not just license cost
A zero-price scanner still consumes engineering time. Estimate the work to install and update it, maintain rules, investigate alerts, handle exceptions, and keep the CI workflow reliable. One tool may reduce integration overhead; several focused tools may improve coverage but create multiple configurations and result streams.
Best Value
During the pilot, record how long it takes to triage findings and how many turn out to be actionable, duplicates, false positives, or items needing application-specific context. Also record failures and code the scanner could not analyze. Those measures help distinguish a useful security signal from raw alert volume. Vendor accuracy claims and published results do not predict your team’s workload without validation on your repositories.
Run a pilot before making scans blocking
A controlled evaluation is more informative than choosing by feature descriptions alone. Use the same representative repositories and a consistent set of review questions for every candidate.
- Select representative repositories. Include the important languages, frameworks, and architectural patterns in the team’s production code, rather than a single convenient sample.
- Run each candidate in realistic modes. Try local execution and the intended CI or pull-request workflow. Record setup problems, scan failures, duration, and any code the tool could not analyze.
- Review findings against known issues and expert judgment. Classify actionable findings, false positives, duplicates, and cases that need more context. Do not treat the scanner’s alert count as a quality score.
- Exercise rules and remediation. Test a few relevant built-in and custom rules, then follow findings through developer visibility, assignment, fix, and closure.
- Verify privacy and terms. Confirm data handling and repository licensing for the configuration and edition actually under consideration.
- Estimate continuing ownership. Account for rules, tool updates, alert triage, and exception review. Only then decide whether any scan should block a merge.
This is an evaluation method, not a reported head-to-head test. No controlled comparison establishes which candidate will perform best on a particular engineering team. A 2024 academic preprint evaluated 15 SAST tools and 12 open-source LLMs on repositories in Java, C, and Python. In that study, the SAST tools had low vulnerability-detection rates with relatively low false positives, while the LLMs achieved 90%–100% detection with high false positives. Those results describe that study’s repositories and methodology; they are not a general ranking or a prediction for your codebase.
Make the decision with a team-specific scorecard
Before the pilot, agree on which criteria are mandatory and which are tradeoffs. A scorecard is useful only when it captures the team’s real constraints rather than rewarding the candidate with the longest feature list.
- Scope: Does it cover the risk categories you actually need, or are additional tools required?
- Stack fit: Does it analyze the languages, frameworks, and repository patterns in production?
- Depth: Can it follow the flows relevant to your threat model, and what analysis boundaries were observed?
- Signal: Are findings actionable after expert review, and is the triage burden sustainable?
- Workflow: Can developers receive and resolve findings where they work, with a useful result format?
- Privacy and terms: Does the deployment meet repository data constraints, and are required features licensed for your use?
- Ownership: Is there capacity to maintain rules, updates, and exceptions?
Weight the criteria according to the team’s repositories and environment; there is no evidence-based universal weighting. If one candidate is strong on analysis but incompatible with a private-repository license requirement, that is a hard constraint rather than a minor score deduction. If a specialist tool covers a narrow critical stack well, it may be a useful addition even when it cannot serve as the sole analyzer.
Choose based on evidence from your own code
For a fast, locally usable rule engine with custom-rule options, Semgrep CE is a reasonable candidate to test, provided its documented analysis boundary fits the cases you need to catch. For query-based analysis and repository alerts, evaluate CodeQL with GitHub code scanning while verifying language support and private-repository licensing. For a codebase concentrated in Python, Rails, or Go, consider the respective specialist analyzers listed by OWASP as targeted candidates, not as general-purpose polyglot scanners.
The final choice should follow the pilot’s findings: which relevant issues were detected, what context was missed, how much triage and maintenance the workflow demands, and whether privacy and license terms fit. Keep the decision open to a combination of tools when separate scan categories or stack-specific gaps require it.
