Also distinguish company-reported financial results from third-party market estimates, and treat both as dated snapshots of a cyclical industry—not as standalone forecasts or buy signals.
Start with comparable periods and clearly defined measures
Before comparing two memory manufacturers, establish that the figures cover the same kind of period and use a comparable accounting basis. A company’s fiscal year may not match the calendar year, and its fiscal quarters may not align exactly with a rival’s. Record the issuer, fiscal period, currency, unit, and whether each figure is GAAP or adjusted. For market share, also record the product category, period, publisher, and whether the estimate measures revenue or physical shipments.

Use annual filings to understand audited historical financial statements and business risks. Use the latest quarterly earnings release for more recent results and management’s outlook, while checking its reconciliation when it presents non-GAAP measures. A quarterly release is not a substitute for an audited annual filing, and a company-defined adjusted measure should not be silently compared with a cash-flow-statement or GAAP measure.

- Industry estimates: Market-share or market-size estimates published by a research firm. These are not audited issuer disclosures, and separate firms may use different definitions.
- Management explanations and outlook: The company’s account of what drove results or what it expects. Attribute these statements to management rather than presenting them as independently verified causes or guaranteed outcomes.
A useful comparison sheet should preserve those distinctions instead of combining every number into one apparently uniform ranking.

Measure revenue growth, then investigate its source
Calculate year-over-year revenue growth using matched periods: (current-period revenue − comparable prior-year revenue) ÷ comparable prior-year revenue. Matching the period helps prevent seasonality or differences in fiscal calendars from making a short-term movement look like a durable trend. Compare both the growth rate and the revenue amount; a percentage alone can hide the scale of the business.
For memory companies, revenue can change because of selling prices, shipment volumes, or product mix. A richer mix—such as a greater contribution from higher-value products—can lift revenue even if physical shipments do not rise by the same percentage. Conversely, a price increase can raise industry revenue without showing that suppliers shipped a corresponding increase in memory bits. Look for issuer commentary and any available product-level disclosures to identify the possible drivers. Treat explanations in earnings materials as management’s view.
Example: Micron’s fiscal 2025 growth
Micron reported that its fiscal 2025 revenue increased 49% year over year. In its fiscal 2025 filing, the company said the increase primarily reflected higher sales of both DRAM and NAND products. That is useful evidence about Micron’s reported business mix and management’s explanation, but the single growth rate does not establish how much came from price, units, or mix, nor does it forecast the next period.

When comparing this figure with another company, first make sure the other figure covers a reasonably comparable fiscal period and accounting basis. Then check whether the peer’s revenue is disclosed by product. If it is not, avoid implying that consolidated growth rates reveal which company has stronger DRAM, HBM, or NAND momentum.

Read gross margin together with operating profitability
Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue. It indicates how much revenue remains after the cost of goods sold, before operating expenses such as research and development, selling, and administration. Track the percentage and the underlying gross-profit amount: the percentage describes profitability per revenue dollar, while the amount shows the scale of gross profit generated.
Memory gross margins are exposed to pricing, product mix, manufacturing costs, and factory utilization. Those factors can shift substantially over a cycle. Compare like periods, and avoid treating a single high or low quarter as a normal long-run level. A gross-margin increase can be important, but it does not answer whether the company also controls its operating costs or has enough cash left after investment.
Example: Micron fiscal 2025
Micron reported consolidated gross margin of 40% in fiscal 2025, compared with 22% in fiscal 2024, and attributed the improvement to better margins for both DRAM and NAND products. The comparison shows a substantial year-over-year improvement on the company’s stated basis; it does not, by itself, establish that the same margin is sustainable through a different pricing or utilization environment.

Move from gross profit to operating income
Operating income and operating margin show what remains after operating expenses and other operating items are accounted for. Operating margin is operating income divided by revenue. Examining it alongside gross margin helps distinguish a favorable production-and-pricing environment from the company’s broader ability to fund R&D and run the business. Two companies with similar gross margins may report different operating profitability if their expense bases differ.

Keep GAAP and non-GAAP measures separate. If an issuer emphasizes adjusted operating income or margin, review the reconciliation and identify which items were excluded. Do not substitute an adjusted figure for a reported figure in a comparison without labeling the change in basis.
Test earnings against cash generation and reinvestment
Memory manufacturing requires ongoing spending on capacity and technology. Read operating cash flow and capital expenditures alongside reported profitability, then assess cash balances and the nature of the investment. Free cash flow is commonly calculated as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, but an issuer may publish an adjusted free-cash-flow figure with its own definition. Preserve that distinction rather than assuming the measures are interchangeable.
For each period, ask whether cash from operations is sufficient to cover capital spending, whether the company is expanding or upgrading capacity, and how much liquidity remains. A strong gross margin is not the same thing as cash available to shareholders: operating costs, taxes, working capital, and investment all affect the amount ultimately retained.

Example: Micron fiscal Q3 2026
For the quarter ended May 28, 2026, Micron reported revenue of US$41.456 billion, GAAP gross profit of US$35.056 billion—about 84.6% of revenue—operating income of US$33.318 billion, and operating cash flow of US$25.39 billion. The release also reported US$7.1 billion of net capital expenditures and US$18.3 billion of adjusted free cash flow. The gross-profit dollar amount divided by revenue produces the stated approximate gross-margin percentage; it is not itself a percentage.

These numbers illustrate why the measures should be read together: revenue and gross profit describe sales and production economics, operating income includes operating costs, and cash flow and investment address cash generation and reinvestment. Micron’s adjusted free cash flow is company-defined and should not be assumed to equal operating cash flow less net capital expenditures without checking the issuer’s definition and reconciliation.
The fiscal Q3 figures are tied to the quarter ended May 28, 2026; they should not be relabeled as fiscal Q4 or full-year results. Micron’s official investor-relations materials also identify a fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results release, but the figures above are the stated Q3 values. For a live stock comparison, use the latest available filing or release for each issuer and update all periods together.

“Market share” is incomplete without a category, period, and measurement basis. DRAM revenue share is not the same as DRAM shipment share, and neither should be combined with HBM or NAND share. Revenue share can move because of prices and product mix even when physical shipment shares move differently. Third-party estimates are useful for industry context, but they should be labeled with the publisher and period and not presented as audited company figures.
TrendForce’s second-quarter 2026 DRAM estimate demonstrates the price effect. The firm estimated industry DRAM revenue at nearly US$154.73 billion, up 59.5% quarter over quarter, and connected the increase to sharp rises in conventional DRAM contract prices while supply expansion continued to lag demand growth. In that setting, a supplier’s revenue share can reflect pricing and mix as well as changes in quantities sold.
TrendForce estimated Micron’s DRAM revenue market share at 23.3% in 2Q26, with its DRAM revenue rising 65.5% quarter over quarter to US$36.0 billion. These are TrendForce’s dated industry estimates, not audited issuer disclosures. The revenue growth rate and share should not be treated as evidence of an equivalent gain in physical bit shipments.
For NAND, TrendForce reported Samsung’s market share at 29.3% in 2Q26 and said the share edged down as competitors grew faster. That is a separate NAND-market estimate, not a DRAM ranking. The same publisher’s NAND release discussed top-brand revenue and enterprise SSD demand, underscoring that category-specific business conditions and product demand matter when interpreting a share figure.
Keep the market-share record auditable
- Write the category explicitly: DRAM, HBM, NAND, or another defined market.
- Label the measure: revenue share, shipment share, or another stated basis.
- Record the period and publisher beside the figure, for example, “TrendForce-estimated DRAM revenue share, 2Q26.”
- Do not treat different research firms’ estimates as directly interchangeable unless their definitions and coverage are known to align.
- Do not infer a company’s shipment growth from revenue-share movement alone when prices or product mix may have changed.
Use a repeatable comparison process
- Set the comparison date and universe. Identify the publicly traded issuers being evaluated and the latest financial periods available for each. Do not mix current results for one company with stale annual results for another without visibly labeling the difference.
- Collect company disclosures. Start with each issuer’s latest annual filing and quarterly release. Capture revenue, gross profit and margin, operating income and margin, operating cash flow, capital spending, cash balances, and the company’s fiscal-period labels.
- Normalize the basis. Record currency, units, period length, GAAP or non-GAAP basis, and any company-specific definition. If the periods or definitions do not align, disclose the mismatch rather than forcing a false apples-to-apples comparison.
- Calculate matched-period growth. Compute year-over-year revenue growth from the same fiscal period in consecutive years. Where disclosures allow, separate product revenue and assess whether the issuer points to price, volume, or mix as drivers.
- Trace profitability through the income statement. Compare gross profit and margin, then operating income and margin. Examine expense trends and use reconciliations when relying on adjusted results.
- Check cash against investment. Compare operating cash flow with capital expenditures and cash balances. Keep issuer-defined adjusted free cash flow distinct from a calculation based on cash-flow-statement figures.
- Add category-specific market context. Use a dated market-share estimate only after confirming its product category, publisher, and measurement basis. Keep DRAM, HBM, and NAND in separate rows or analyses.
- Write the conclusion as a set of trade-offs. State what the figures show about growth, margins, cash and position in a defined market. Identify the most important limitations and avoid turning historical results or a market estimate into a forecast.
Common interpretation errors to avoid
- Comparing unmatched periods: Calendar-year and fiscal-year results may cover different market conditions. Match periods where possible and label any remaining mismatch.
- Calling revenue growth a volume gain: Prices and product mix can change revenue without a matching movement in shipments.
- Using gross margin as a complete profitability measure: It excludes operating expenses and does not show cash after capital investment.
- Mixing GAAP with adjusted measures: A headline non-GAAP figure needs its label and reconciliation; it is not automatically comparable with another company’s GAAP result.
- Combining categories: DRAM, HBM, and NAND have distinct market definitions and economics. A figure for one cannot stand in for the whole memory business.
- Presenting market estimates as issuer facts: Attribute third-party estimates to their publisher and date them.
- Extrapolating one quarter: Memory pricing, margins, and shares can change quickly. A strong quarter or past share gain is not a promise of future performance.
What the available figures can—and cannot—show
The available dated figures illustrate the method, not a complete ranking of all memory manufacturers. Micron’s fiscal 2025 revenue and gross-margin changes are company-reported annual results; its fiscal Q3 2026 measures show how to place profitability, cash generation, and capital spending in one period; TrendForce’s 2Q26 numbers provide separate DRAM and NAND market context. They do not establish a consistent, current financial comparison across Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron. To rank those issuers responsibly, gather each company’s latest filings and releases and normalize the periods and definitions before drawing conclusions.
Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra described the company’s record fiscal Q3 results and stronger Q4 outlook as reflecting “the strategic value of memory in the AI era.” That statement is management’s view of the company’s results and outlook, not independent evidence that demand or profitability will continue at the same level.
Finally, financial comparison is not the same as deciding whether a security is suitable for a particular investor. Historical growth, estimated market share, and management outlook can inform analysis, but they do not by themselves determine valuation, risk tolerance, or future returns.
