For calls, screen for microphone features but look for noisy-environment tests; for exercise, prioritize stability, water resistance and usable controls; for daily use, consider battery life and multipoint. “Open-ear” describes more than one design, and it does not guarantee that you can hear every hazard around you.
Start with the design and fit
Open-ear headphones leave the ear canal unobstructed, but they do not all work the same way. Air-conduction models direct sound toward the ear from small speakers, often held in place by ear hooks. Bone-conduction models use transducers that sit against the head and send vibrations through bone. The examples below include both types, so compare the actual shape and wearing feel rather than assuming every open-ear model will fit or sound alike.

Fit is personal. If possible, try the headphones before buying, especially if you plan to wear them for long sessions or vigorous exercise. A secure-feeling fit matters more than a feature list if the headphones shift during movement.
What to prioritize for open-ear headphones for calls
Microphone count and advertised noise processing can help you shortlist models, but they do not prove that your voice will remain clear on a noisy street or train platform. The manufacturer pages reviewed do not provide a controlled head-to-head call test.

- Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only

- Dedicated EQ Modes - Customize your audio experience with our dedicated EQ modes on the Shokz App. Enjoy pure bone conduction sound with the newly launched Classic Mode, or boost your audio in noisy environments with Volume Boost Mode.
- Crystal-Clear Calls - Strategically positioned dual wind-resistant microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm filter out 96.5% of background noise, including wind at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
- Check the listed microphone setup. soundcore lists four microphones with AI processing on AeroFit Pro; Shokz lists dual noise-canceling microphones on OpenRun Pro. These are manufacturer specifications, not comparative test results.
- Look for independent tests in noise. If commute-call clarity is decisive, seek reviews that test speech in comparable noisy conditions rather than relying only on microphone counts or feature names.
- Consider device switching. soundcore lists multipoint for AeroFit Pro and AeroFit. Confirm that the specific model supports it and check whether setup through an app is required.
What to prioritize for commuting
Open-ear headphones may leave the ear canal uncovered, but that is not a safety guarantee. Fit, volume, surroundings and the activity all affect what you can hear. Bose’s Ultra Open Earbuds manual advises: “Do not use the headphones when the inability to clearly hear surrounding sounds may present a danger to yourself or others, for example while riding a bicycle or walking in or near traffic, a construction site, railroad, etc.” It also cautions against high volume and notes that vehicle use may be prohibited by law in some locations.
Pause or remove headphones whenever they interfere with hearing hazards, and follow local rules. Do not treat an open-ear label as a substitute for awareness or as permission to use headphones in situations where you need to hear traffic or other warnings.

What to prioritize for exercise
For workouts, weigh stability, water resistance, controls and battery claims together. Ratings and features below come from manufacturer pages; they are not independent workout or durability tests.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Fit and stability: soundcore describes AeroFit Pro as having open-ear hooks and a detachable, adjustable neckband. Shokz OpenRun Pro uses a band-and-transducer design. Try the wearing style if you can; the right choice depends on how it sits during your activity.
- Water resistance: AeroFit Pro is listed at IPX5 for the earbuds, AeroFit at IPX7, and OpenRun Pro at IP55. Shokz’s support page lists OpenRun at IP67 but says it is not recommended for underwater swimming. A resistance rating does not, by itself, mean a model is suitable for swimming.
- Controls: Check how playback and calls are controlled, and whether the controls are practical while moving. soundcore’s AeroFit listing notes touch controls; whether those suit you is a matter of preference.
- Battery: Compare claims for the same kind of use and remember that actual runtime varies. Manufacturer battery figures are not directly comparable unless test conditions match.

A practical selection checklist
- Choose the wearing style: decide whether you prefer ear hooks, a band-and-transducer design, or another fit, and try it if possible.
- Match features to your main use: for calls, investigate real-world voice tests; for workouts, check stability, water rating and controls; for switching between devices, verify multipoint support.
- Compare battery claims carefully: note whether a figure is per charge or includes the charging case, and avoid treating different manufacturers’ claims as equivalent test results.
- Check the exact model and region: use the manufacturer’s current product or support page to confirm specifications, availability and any setup requirements.
- Make awareness the deciding factor: lower the volume, pause or remove the headphones when you need to hear your surroundings, and observe local rules.
