For smoother multiplayer racing, start with the game’s connection diagnostics and confirm that online access and account linking are ready. Then check connection stability, cross-play, and voice chat as separate choices. There is no universal “best” preset: change one setting at a time and see whether it addresses the problem you are actually having.
Check access before changing settings
Make sure the game can go online, any required accounts are linked, and your platform’s online-play requirements are met. Requirements vary by game and platform. For example, Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 requires an internet connection and PlayStation Plus for online play; its first launch also involves signing in to PlayStation and Microsoft accounts. Its online modes include Horizon Open, Horizon Arcade, Horizon Tour, EventLab, The Eliminator, Hide & Seek, Festival Playlist, and Freeroam Convoys.

If you cannot join a friend, confirm access and account linking before changing advanced network settings. A connection problem cannot be fixed by a matchmaking option if the account or subscription needed for online play is missing.
Diagnose connection problems by symptom
When available, use the game’s own connection diagnostics and treat ping, packet loss, and jitter as different signals. Electronic Arts explains these terms on its EA SPORTS FC Connection Quality page: ping is round-trip time, packet loss describes packets that fail to complete the trip, and jitter is variation in ping over time. Delays or interruptions between a player’s device and the game data center can cause lag, visual stuttering, or disconnection.

That guidance is published for EA SPORTS FC, not as a racing-game-wide standard. Check your own game’s diagnostics if it provides them, and avoid treating a single reading as a universal pass/fail threshold; no general cutoff is established here.
- Late or inconsistent car response: inspect ping and jitter, and check packet loss if the game reports it.
- Disconnects or dropped sessions: check whether other devices or online services are also having trouble, then consult your platform’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Only one game or several players affected: if local connection checks look normal and multiple players share the issue, look for a current official service-status notice or game support update.
Choose a connection path for stability
Judge your actual connection by consistency, not advertised download speed alone. The route includes your home network, your internet provider, and the game’s data centers; a problem at any stage can affect play.

If you suspect Wi-Fi instability, try Ethernet when your device supports it and you can connect it safely. PlayStation’s voice-chat troubleshooting guide recommends using a wired connection if possible. A cable is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee: it will not necessarily resolve an ISP, routing, or game-service problem.

For PlayStation voice-chat disconnections, the same guide also suggests checking the connection and restarting the console and network equipment. Its port-opening advice is platform-specific; do not treat port changes as a universal first step. Follow platform and ISP instructions and only consider them when there is a known need.

Set cross-play around your group
Cross-play determines whether players on different platforms can join the same matchmaking pool. Leave it enabled when friends use different platforms or when you want a broader pool, unless the game’s controls or your group’s preferences point another way.
For a specific example, EA’s F1 25 cross-play instructions cover PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. In that game, the setting is under Settings > Crossplay. With cross-play disabled, players match only with others on their platform. That trade-off is specific to F1 25; check your own game’s menu and policies rather than assuming the same behavior everywhere.

Separate voice chat from race connectivity
If the race stays connected but teammates cannot hear one another, check audio routing before treating it as a network problem. On PlayStation, verify the selected input device, microphone level, mute state, output device, and whether party chat or game chat is prioritized. Menu labels and controls differ between console generations, so use the guidance for your device.

Choose party chat or in-game chat based on where your group is coordinating, then confirm that the microphone and audio output are routed to the intended devices. A headset may be relevant if the device itself is faulty, but first check the settings and test the available devices.

Check for service-side matchmaking trouble
Not every failed convoy or matchmaking attempt is caused by a setting in your home. Forza’s community update on December 2, 2021, described reported matchmaking, connectivity, convoy, and player-disappearance problems in Forza Horizon 5 at that time. That is historical evidence, not an indication of the game’s current status. Check the game’s current official status or support channels if several players encounter the same issue.
