Which Magic booster should you choose?
| Your goal | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Booster Draft | Play Booster, or the set’s designated Limited booster | Confirm the current set’s product details. Wizards describes Play Boosters as designed for Draft and for opening packs for fun. Wizards’ product guide |
| Sealed event | The booster type and number listed by the event | Play Boosters are Limited-play products, but there is no universal Sealed pack count established here. Follow the event’s rules or ask its organizer. |
| Premium treatments and collecting | Collector Booster | Review the set’s contents and odds. These vary by set, and a booster is not a dependable way to obtain a particular card. Wizards’ product listings |
Choose a Play Booster for Draft
Booster Draft is a Limited format: players select cards from opened packs, pass the remaining cards, then build decks from what they drafted. Wizards’ current Booster Draft guide describes play for up to eight people. Each player opens three boosters in turn, picks a card from each pack, and passes the rest; the direction alternates between packs. Players finish with about 45 drafted cards, add basic lands, and build a deck of at least 40 cards.

That makes the Play Booster the straightforward choice for ordinary current-set Draft. Wizards says it combines the former Set Booster and Draft Booster into one product, intended for Draft play or opening packs for fun. The original design explanation is historical context; check the current set page for what a particular pack contains. Mark Rosewater’s explanation of Play Boosters

For Sealed, check the event’s pack rules
Sealed uses a pool of unopened boosters rather than drafting cards by passing packs around. A Play Booster is the relevant Limited-play product, but the number of packs is set by the event, not by a universal rule established across all events. Before purchasing, check the event listing or ask the organizer which product and quantity to bring.

Choose a Collector Booster for premium treatments
Collector Boosters are aimed at players who want a collecting-focused opening and are interested in special card treatments. They are not the ordinary choice for Draft. Their exact mix of rarities, foils, and treatments is set-specific, so look up the current set’s official collecting details rather than assuming every Collector Booster follows one template.
Set contents can differ substantially
Reality Fracture illustrates why checking the individual set matters. Wizards’ 2026 set archive lists these contents; the figures describe those products, not universal specifications for Magic boosters.

|---|---|---|
| Play Booster | 1–5 Rare or higher; 2–6 Uncommon; 5–8 Common; 1 Land | The listed rarity ranges are set-specific. Wizards’ Reality Fracture set archive |
| Collector Booster | 5 Rare or higher; 5 Uncommon; 4 Common; 1 Land | 0–2 Surge Foil and 11–12 Traditional Foil cards. The Headliner Mythic Rare appears in fewer than 1% of these set’s Collector Boosters, according to Wizards’ disclosure. Wizards’ Reality Fracture set archive |
The rarity counts and treatment ranges help describe the opening experience, but they do not make a booster a reliable route to any named card. If you want one specific card, buying it directly is more predictable than relying on pack variance.
Know about the announced 2027 product changes
In an announcement dated October 5, 2026, Wizards said changes will begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027. From that set, Play Boosters will be called Booster Packs; foil commons and uncommons will be removed, and a foil will no longer be guaranteed. Wizards also announced that one in every 1,000 Booster Packs will contain a God Pack with 14 rare or mythic rare cards. That rate applies to the announced Booster Packs beginning with that set, not to Reality Fracture or earlier products. Check the specific set’s official details as the change takes effect.
