Choose inventory planning software by testing how well it forecasts your recurring seasonal peaks—and whether it can turn those forecasts into buying, allocation, replenishment, and transfer decisions across your actual stores, channels, and distribution network. Ask each vendor to demonstrate the full workflow on your data, not just present a feature list.
Start with the seasonal patterns your business must plan for
Seasonality means regular, predictable demand patterns that recur at fixed intervals. Microsoft gives holiday shopping in December as a retail example. A useful evaluation should establish whether a system can distinguish that recurring pattern from underlying trend changes, promotions, unusual outliers, and one-off events. Microsoft Learn’s forecast-model documentation describes seasonality in forecasting; it also flags some capabilities as prerelease and subject to change.

Use examples from your own calendar: holiday peaks, weather-related demand, school schedules, or recurring promotional periods where relevant to your business. Ask the vendor to show how those patterns appear in the forecast, what data informs them, and how a planner can inspect or override the result. A forecast that smooths away a short but important peak may be less useful than one that makes the peak visible and gives planners a practical way to respond.

A forecast is an input to planning, not the whole planning process. Oracle’s documentation describes forecasting alongside inventory planning, purchasing, allocation, and replenishment. During a demo, follow one seasonal item from projected demand through the decisions your team needs to make: setting inventory targets, buying from suppliers, allocating stock, replenishing locations, or transferring units between nodes.

Ask which steps the product performs and which require a separate application, export, or manual handoff. Those boundaries matter: a strong forecasting feature may not, by itself, produce usable orders or recommendations for your operation. Oracle’s Retail Inventory Planning Optimization Cloud Service 25.2 documentation describes demand forecasting, lifecycle allocation, and replenishment. It also describes replenishment orders or transfers based on inventory conditions and constraints. This is a documented product example, not independent evidence that it will outperform alternatives.
Model your items, locations, and channels
Ask vendors to demonstrate planning at the levels your business actually uses: item or SKU, category, store, distribution center, and sales channel. Then check whether recommendations respect the way stock moves through your network. A forecast at total-company level may not answer where to send inventory; a channel-level plan may not reflect store-specific demand.

For example, Cognizant describes Merch Insight as forecasting at item, category, and channel levels, with planning, inventory, allocation, replenishment, and analytics capabilities. Oracle describes replenishment orders or transfers across inventory flows. Treat these descriptions as claims to validate: bring a representative assortment and ask vendors to show how the system handles your own nodes, channels, and allocation constraints.
Verify data, integrations, and planner workload
Before evaluating a demo, list the inputs the vendor expects and the systems that own them. For seasonal planning, that may include sales, inventory, promotions, supplier information, and lead times. Verify how data reaches the product from your point-of-sale, ERP, ecommerce, warehouse, and purchasing systems, and how recommendations return to the teams or systems that act on them. The available product descriptions do not establish specific connector support, so confirm each integration directly rather than assuming it exists.

Also test the operational experience, not just the forecast screen. Ask how planners identify exceptions, review assumptions, override recommendations, and manage the forecast volume your assortment creates. A capable system still has to fit the time and skills of the team that will use it; assess whether the workflow is manageable without implementation or ongoing process overhead your organization cannot support.
Compare candidates using a consistent checklist
Give every vendor the same seasonal scenario, data sample, and questions. Record what is demonstrated, what is merely described, and what depends on another product or manual work.

Use a pilot and references to test vendor claims
The cited product materials come from vendors; they do not establish an independent head-to-head winner, comparative prices, or measured implementation outcomes. Ask for a pilot using representative data that includes a seasonal peak, and agree in advance what a useful result means for your operation. For instance, evaluate whether the forecast and resulting recommendations are understandable and actionable for the locations and workflows in scope; do not treat a vendor’s feature list as proof of forecast accuracy.
Request customer references with a similar retail scale, seasonal profile, and network complexity. Compare implementation effort, support, and total cost alongside product capability. Confirm the exact release, geography, packaging, integrations, and availability of every feature you plan to rely on; release status can change, and Microsoft specifically marks some documented demand-planning capabilities as prerelease.
