Choose hosting based on where the game is rendered. If the host runs the game, it needs enough gaming compute—usually including a suitable GPU—as well as an encoder and a reliable connection to YouTube. If another device renders the game, or the feed is prerecorded, the host may only need to encode or transmit video. A low-cost generic VPS is not a safe choice for remote gameplay unless its GPU and performance are confirmed for your specific game.
For a live game, compare a maintained gaming PC at home with a cloud-hosted gaming machine. For a prerecorded loop, a cloud service such as StreamNeo can keep uploaded video streaming to YouTube without leaving a computer on. These are different workloads, so first identify what the host must actually do.

Start by identifying what the host will do
The key infrastructure question is whether the host must render the game, encode a feed produced elsewhere, or send video that has already been rendered. These tasks have different hardware needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe host runs the game
The machine must meet the game’s own CPU and GPU requirements while also encoding the stream. A remote cloud machine needs suitable GPU capacity if the game runs there; verify availability and performance for the specific title rather than assuming any virtual machine will work. AWS documents GPU-enabled EC2 as a cloud-gaming deployment pattern, but its example does not establish a sufficient configuration for every game (AWS Compute Blog; originally published October 27, 2021, and marked reviewed for accuracy in July 2025).

Another device renders the game
If a separate PC or console produces the gameplay, the streaming host may only need to encode or relay the feed. Map how video and audio reach that host before buying hardware. A capture card is not automatically required; the connection method and devices determine whether one is needed.
The feed is prerecorded or pre-rendered
Sending an existing video continuously can be less demanding than rendering a live game, but the encoder or service still has to maintain a valid feed. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast scenario in which video continues to be sent while broadcasts are managed (YouTube Live Streaming API documentation). A prerecorded loop is not live gameplay, and continuous playback does not remove the need to follow YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies.
Compare a local gaming PC with cloud gaming compute
Neither approach is inherently cheaper or more reliable for every channel. Compare the whole workload and the operator’s ability to maintain it.

| Decision factor | Local gaming PC | Cloud-hosted gaming machine |
|---|---|---|
| Game rendering | Uses the local system’s CPU and GPU; match them to the game and the encoder workload. | Must provide suitable GPU capacity if the game itself runs remotely. AWS’s cloud-gaming example demonstrates the pattern, not a universal specification (AWS). |
| Internet path | Depends on home upload capacity and the local network staying available. | Moves the host-to-YouTube upload to the provider’s network; remote administration still depends on your connection. |
| Power and host operations | You manage updates, restarts, monitoring, and local power. A correctly sized UPS may cover a brief power interruption, but not an ISP outage, software crash, or YouTube-side issue. | You manage remote access, restarts, persistence, and recovery. Confirm the provider’s machine lifecycle and support; the reviewed sources do not establish an uptime guarantee for this workload. |
| Network capacity and cost | Measure sustained upload and check your internet plan’s terms. | Check egress limits and transfer charges for the specific machine and route. Google Cloud says maximum egress depends on machine type and routing, is not guaranteed, and can be reduced by configuration and network factors (Google Cloud networking documentation). |
| Best fit | You already have an appropriate gaming system, a predictable home connection, and the ability to maintain it. | You need game rendering off-site and have verified GPU availability, network capacity, and continuous compute costs. |
Before committing to a cloud machine, obtain current regional GPU availability and pricing, check transfer charges, and confirm the instance can run your game and encoder together. A provider-wide bandwidth headline is not a substitute for the selected instance’s actual limits.
Size the upload path for the stream settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these H.264 video bitrates for the listed resolutions and frame rates. They are encoder targets, not minimum internet plans or guarantees that a particular connection or virtual machine can sustain them. The figures below are from YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026 (YouTube live encoder settings).
| Output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
Allow operating margin above the video bitrate. Audio, protocol overhead, other traffic, congestion, and connection variation also consume capacity. Run a speed test and test the actual stream over time; a single peak upload result does not demonstrate that the connection can sustain a 24/7 broadcast.

Use YouTube-supported output settings
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1.
- Frame rate: The guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR as listed in YouTube’s guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
These settings are from YouTube’s encoder guidance, which also advises testing before going live with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube Help; RTMPS recommendation also described in YouTube Help on RTMPS). Test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and movement you expect to run continuously.
Plan monitoring and recovery before running 24/7
A continuously running channel needs a defined response to a failed feed, not just an encoder that can start streaming. Decide who or what will detect trouble, how the encoder reconnects, and what happens after the host reboots or loses its stream key.
- Check YouTube stream health: Monitor the live dashboard or an appropriate status check. YouTube’s API includes stream configuration and health concepts;
noDataindicates the backend has no stream-health information. It is a reminder to monitor, not a complete alerting system (YouTube Live Streams API). - Define restart behavior: Confirm how the encoder starts after a crash or reboot, whether it reconnects automatically, and how you will know if it fails repeatedly.
- Protect configuration and access: Keep stream-key handling secure, document recovery steps, and verify that a restart does not require someone to be physically present.
- For a home host: A UPS sized for the PC and network equipment may help with brief local power interruptions. It does not protect against ISP failures, hardware faults, software crashes, or YouTube-side problems.
- For a cloud host: Check persistent-storage needs, remote access, restart options, GPU availability, and continuous compute and network charges with the provider.
No source establishes an uptime guarantee for a particular host running this workload. A backup machine or UPS can reduce particular risks, but neither provides end-to-end uptime by itself.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the channel plays uploaded videos rather than rendering live gameplay, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an always-on PC: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing, then start your free day.
