Choose hosting for a headless WordPress site by evaluating two layers separately: the WordPress backend that stores and serves content, and the frontend application that renders the public site. A suitable setup must support WordPress’s current software requirements and your chosen content API, while also fitting your preview, caching, deployment, recovery, and support workflows. Do not choose on a speed claim alone; check that the actual plan supports the whole architecture you intend to run.
Understand what you are hosting
In a conventional WordPress site, WordPress manages content and also generates the pages visitors see. In a headless setup, WordPress remains the content management system (CMS), but a separate frontend application consumes its content and presents it to visitors. That separation can give a team more control over the frontend, but it also means hosting is a system of connected services rather than a single WordPress plan.

The backend needs to run WordPress, its database, and the plugins and content model your editors use. It exposes content through an API. The frontend application retrieves that content, renders pages, and delivers them to visitors. Depending on the design, it may build pages ahead of time, request data dynamically, or combine approaches. Those choices affect what must be available at request time and how updates reach the public site.

The WordPress REST API provides JSON access to site data, with visibility and authentication restrictions applying to private data. A GraphQL-based frontend can instead use WPGraphQL. These APIs are not interchangeable in every implementation: decide which one your application will use, then confirm that the backend, plugins, authentication approach, and cache setup work with it. See the WordPress REST API Handbook for REST API behavior.

Separate responsibilities before comparing plans
| Layer | What it does | Hosting questions |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress backend | Stores content and editorial data, runs WordPress and its plugins, and exposes the chosen API. | Who operates the PHP runtime and database? Are WordPress and plugin updates supported? Does the API endpoint work with the required authentication and rewrite behavior? What limits apply to API requests? |
| Frontend application | Consumes API data, renders the public experience, and may build or revalidate pages. | Where are builds and delivery run? How are drafts previewed? What triggers a build or revalidation after publishing? Which cache can be purged or refreshed? |
| Integration between them | Connects content changes, API responses, previews, media, and frontend delivery. | Who diagnoses failures across the boundary? What remains available if one layer is down? How are credentials, logs, and cache invalidation handled? |
One provider may support more than one layer, but do not assume that a plan marketed for WordPress also hosts the frontend application, or that a frontend platform operates the WordPress database. Verify the components covered by each plan and who owns the handoff between them.
Start with the WordPress backend requirements
Check the software baseline before comparing performance or bundled features. WordPress.org says, “To run WordPress, it’s recommended your host supports:” PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. It recommends Apache or Nginx, while noting that other servers that support PHP and MySQL can work. These recommendations can change, so confirm the current WordPress.org requirements against the proposed plan before committing.
WordPress also warns that older versions that may still work in practice can be end-of-life and expose sites to security vulnerabilities. Ask the provider which versions the plan actually runs, how updates are applied, and whether you can meet the recommended baseline without an unsupported workaround. A plan’s compatibility with WordPress in general is not enough if it cannot meet the requirements for your chosen WordPress release or plugins.

If the frontend will use REST, confirm the relevant endpoints are reachable from the frontend environment and that public, private, and authenticated content behaves as intended. The REST API restricts access to private data; do not build an editorial preview flow on the assumption that private drafts can be fetched as public content.

If the frontend will use WPGraphQL, check its documented compatibility requirements. The WPGraphQL compatibility guide requires WordPress 6.0 or higher, says the /graphql endpoint depends on URL rewriting, and recommends HTTPS for production. Confirm that URL rewriting works on the specific host configuration, and test the endpoint over HTTPS rather than relying on a successful WordPress dashboard login as proof that the API is ready. The WPGraphQL compatibility guide is the reference for these requirements.
Test the API with the site’s actual content types, plugins, and access rules. An endpoint that responds to a simple query does not establish that all required fields, relationships, media, previews, or authentication scenarios work. If a plugin or content model is essential, include it in the host evaluation rather than treating plugin compatibility as a later migration detail.
Evaluate caching and content freshness together
Headless sites often use caching to reduce repeated work and deliver rendered pages efficiently. The important hosting question is not merely whether caching is included. It is whether the intended caches can be refreshed when content changes, and whether the public site’s freshness behavior matches editorial expectations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, WPGraphQL Smart Cache has documented requirements for tag-based caching and invalidation, including correct handling of the X-GraphQL-Keys response header. The WPGraphQL documentation notes that many hosts do not support this level of cache control. If you plan to use Smart Cache, ask the provider specifically whether its cache layer preserves and acts on the required tags and header. A generic statement such as “caching included” does not answer that question. See WPGraphQL’s known limitations.

Map the publish-to-publication path
Write down what should happen after an editor changes content. Depending on the architecture, the sequence may involve saving in WordPress, making the update available through the API, triggering a frontend build or revalidation, and refreshing any relevant caches. Your selected services need a defined way to move through that sequence.
- Decide whether a publish event starts a frontend build, triggers revalidation, or relies on another update mechanism.
- Identify which service receives the event and which credentials or endpoints it uses.
- Ask how stale cached API data and rendered pages are invalidated, including whether invalidation can target affected content rather than the entire site.
- Test edits, new posts, unpublishing, and changes to shared content such as navigation or reusable blocks.
- Agree on what editors should expect if a build, webhook, API request, or invalidation step fails.
Do not assume that preview and published content follow the same path. Draft previews may require authentication and a separate frontend route or workflow. Confirm how preview access is protected, whether editors can preview the content types they use, and whether preview changes stay out of public caches.
Choose the frontend hosting model deliberately
A frontend platform and a WordPress host solve different parts of the problem. A framework platform may build and serve a Next.js application, while WordPress hosting operates the CMS backend. Vercel’s guide to WordPress with Next.js is one example of this split: it uses WPGraphQL and Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR), and describes the frontend and WordPress backend as separate pieces. The guide was updated November 10, 2025; it is an integration example, not a comparison of all available hosts or proof that a particular plan is right for every site. See Vercel’s WordPress and Next.js guide.
That guide describes a possible configuration in which a statically generated frontend can continue serving cached content during WordPress server downtime. Treat this as an architectural possibility, not an availability guarantee. The result depends on how the frontend is built, what content is already cached, how delivery is configured, and which pages require fresh backend data. Ask which parts of your site remain available during a backend outage and test the behavior you rely on.

When evaluating a frontend platform, verify support for your framework and deployment workflow, build triggers, preview deployments, delivery behavior, cache controls, usage limits, and logs. For the WordPress provider, verify runtime, database, API access, content preview needs, backup and restore, and plugin support. Then establish which support team handles failures that cross the boundary; “the site is down” may involve either provider or the integration between them.
Compare providers with a decision matrix
Use the same questions for each candidate. Record what the provider confirms for the exact plan, region, and configuration you would buy. The criteria below are questions to verify, not features that every host necessarily includes.
| Decision area | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Backend compatibility | Current PHP and database support, HTTPS, WordPress update policy, and compatibility with required plugins. | The CMS must run on a supported baseline and support the site’s actual content and editorial setup. |
| API support | REST or WPGraphQL endpoint availability, URL rewriting, authentication, and request limits. | The frontend’s data path is part of the hosting requirement, not an optional feature. |
| Cache behavior | How API and frontend caches are refreshed; for WPGraphQL Smart Cache, support for tags, invalidation, and X-GraphQL-Keys. |
Incorrect invalidation can leave published content stale or create operational workarounds. |
| Editorial workflow | Draft preview, preview authentication, publish-triggered build or revalidation, and media handling. | Editors need a reliable way to review work and understand when changes become public. |
| Resilience and recovery | Backup scope and frequency, retention, restore process, recovery objectives, and what remains available during backend downtime. | A backup is useful only if its contents and restoration process fit the site’s recovery needs. |
| Deployment and operations | Staging, deployment controls, logs, provider support boundaries, and responsibility for each layer. | Clear ownership makes it easier to diagnose failures and safely release changes. |
| Cost and scale | Included usage, overage rules, traffic and storage limits, geographic options, and renewal price. | Headless architecture can involve more than one service, so the total cost and constraints matter. |
The available public sources here do not establish comparable current plans, prices, limits, or feature coverage for individual providers. Do not infer those values from category labels or marketing claims. Get the current terms for the specific plans under consideration and compare equivalent configurations, including any usage charges that apply to frontend builds, API traffic, storage, or delivery.

- Define the architecture. Record whether the frontend is Next.js or another framework, whether it uses REST or WPGraphQL, and which content must be public, private, or previewable. Identify whether rendering depends on data being fetched live, built ahead of time, or revalidated.
- Set the backend minimum. Compare the proposed WordPress plan with the current WordPress.org software recommendations. Confirm the PHP and database versions, HTTPS, server setup, update policy, and compatibility of required plugins.
- Validate the API on the candidate environment. Test the actual endpoint, URL rewriting where relevant, authentication, expected content fields, media, and request limits. Do this with representative content rather than a minimal demo.
- Walk through editorial changes. Have an editor create and revise a draft, preview it, publish it, and then make a correction or unpublish it. Observe how each action reaches the frontend and what happens if a build or refresh step fails.
- Verify cache invalidation. Identify every cache between WordPress and the visitor. Test whether a content change appears within the required editorial window. If using WPGraphQL Smart Cache, obtain a direct answer about tag-based invalidation and
X-GraphQL-Keyshandling. - Review operations and recovery. Ask for the backup scope, retention and restore procedure; confirm staging, logs, deployment controls, and who supports each layer. If outage behavior matters, test what pages remain served when the backend is unavailable.
- Calculate total plan cost and constraints. Check current renewal terms, included usage, overages, geographic choices, and traffic or storage limits for all services in the architecture. Compare like with like, not one backend-only plan against a bundled multi-layer offering.
- Run a compatibility trial before migration. Where cache behavior, plugin support, or editorial previews are uncertain, test the intended architecture using the actual content model and plugins before committing the production site.
Questions to get answered in writing
Ask each provider for answers tied to the exact plan rather than relying on general product descriptions. Keep the responses with the architecture notes so they can guide implementation and future support requests.
Best Value
- Which PHP and database versions are available on this plan, and how are runtime and WordPress updates handled?
- Can the site’s chosen REST or WPGraphQL endpoint be used, including its rewrite and authentication requirements?
- Are there API request limits, and what happens if the site reaches them?
- Which cache layers are present, and how can the application invalidate or refresh content?
- If applicable, does the cache correctly support tag-based invalidation and the
X-GraphQL-Keysresponse header? - How are draft previews secured, and what steps connect a WordPress publish event to frontend build or revalidation?
- What is included in backups, how long are they retained, and how is a restore requested and tested?
- What staging and deployment controls are available, and which team supports incidents involving both the backend and frontend?
- Which regions, traffic and storage limits, usage charges, and renewal terms apply to the plan?
Common selection mistakes
Buying on a speed claim alone
A performance statement does not establish that the API, cache, preview path, or recovery process fits your application. Compare the operational requirements first, then test the actual workload where performance is a deciding factor. The available sources do not supply comparable benchmarks for individual hosts, so there is no evidence-based universal fastest choice here.
Assuming “managed WordPress” includes the frontend
A managed WordPress service may cover the CMS backend without building or delivering a separate frontend application. Confirm the exact components and responsibilities included in the plan, and price the frontend layer separately when needed.
Treating an API response as proof of complete compatibility
A working endpoint is only one check. The full content model, plugin behavior, permissions, media, previews, and request limits need validation in the proposed environment. This is especially important when the frontend relies on non-public drafts or cache invalidation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Confusing cached availability with guaranteed uptime
A frontend can sometimes continue serving already generated or cached pages while the backend is unavailable. That does not mean every route, update, or uncached request remains functional. Establish the exact outage behavior your configuration provides instead of treating a static or cached fallback as a blanket service guarantee.
Comparing only the advertised starting price
A headless deployment may involve separate backend and frontend services. Check their combined recurring cost, usage charges, limits, renewal terms, and any operational trade-offs before choosing. Current provider prices and plan details must be verified directly because the cited material does not provide a like-for-like price comparison.
Make the choice based on fit, not a universal winner
The right hosting arrangement is the one whose backend meets WordPress’s current requirements, whose API and cache behavior support the planned frontend, and whose preview, recovery, deployment, support, and cost terms fit the team’s needs. For a small or complex site alike, the decisive test is the complete content-to-visitor path: editors can preview and publish, changes become visible as expected, and the people responsible can recover and troubleshoot each layer.
Shortlist providers only after mapping those requirements, then verify each exact plan and test uncertain integrations before moving production content. No named-host ranking or universal performance winner follows from the available plan evidence; treat provider claims as questions to validate against your own architecture.
