For a prairie home, choose a roof by verifying the impact rating of the exact product, then confirming that its full roof system suits your house, local building rules and insurance policy. A Class 4 label is useful evidence from a defined test—not a promise that hail cannot damage the roof.
Start with your home and its exposure
Hailstorms are a practical concern in parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The Government of Canada recommends considering impact-resistant roofing in areas with moderate-to-high hail risk and advises consulting a roofing specialist about materials and installation methods: Government of Canada hail guidance.

Before comparing products, have a qualified roofer assess the roof’s slope and complexity, decking and existing layers, ventilation, drainage, penetrations and the structure’s capacity for the proposed covering. These factors affect compatibility, installation and cost; the heaviest or most impact-resistant-sounding option is not automatically suitable for your home.

What a Class 4 rating tells you
UL 2218 is an impact test for roof-covering materials that uses dropped steel balls and evaluates the material’s back surface for cracks, tears or fractures. Class 4 is the highest classification in that test. In GAF’s description, Class 3 uses a 1.75-inch steel ball dropped from 17 feet, while Class 4 uses a 2-inch ball dropped from 20 feet. These are controlled laboratory test conditions, not a simulation of every hailstorm.

Ask for the manufacturer’s current technical documentation and verify that the exact product is classified under the stated test. GAF says only products sold in packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 3 or Class 4 classification statement are rated at those levels. Its information also says a rated product is not warranted to avoid hail damage: GAF’s Class 4 impact-resistant shingle information.
ICLR’s RC1 roof-cover guidance recommends products that comply with UL 2218 or FM 4473 Class 4. Because the standards apply to different kinds of products, ask the roofer which standard applies to each proposal and request the supporting product documentation: ICLR RC1 roof-cover document.

Class 4 impact-resistant asphalt shingles are one option; GAF identifies Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat as an example. Treat that as the manufacturer’s product statement, and confirm the current classification for the exact product you are offered rather than assuming a whole brand or product family has the same rating.
Compare materials as complete roof systems
Hail-resistant options marketed for homeowners include Class 4 asphalt shingles and concrete, clay, slate or rubber coverings. Aviva lists these categories as options, but that list does not establish equal performance, price, availability or fit for a particular prairie home: Aviva’s hail-resistant roofing overview.

- Corrugated Aluminum Roof Shingles: Our roof shingles are made from 1.0mm thick, high-strength aluminum. Containing over 99% aluminum, these Metal Asphalt Roof Shingles are strong, unbreakable, rust-resistant, wind-resistant, flame-retardant, and aesthetically pleasing. They are suitable for a variety of applications, including homes, villas, pavilions, garages, stables, greenhouses, and balconies
- Efficient Drainage: The corrugated shape allows for easy stacking and seamless connection, while the grooves guide water flow for rapid drainage. This set contains 10, 20, or 30 metal roof shingles. Note: The color of our architectural shingles is black, not gray. Slight color variations may occur due to screen variations and product images captured under varying lighting conditions
- Durability: Compared to standard asphalt or cement shingles, these metal roof shingles are only one-sixth the weight, making them easier to handle and install. The sturdy material can easily support an adult walking on it. (Note: Tiles must be installed on a sturdy supporting structure such as rafters or roof trusses. Avoid stepping directly on tiles without support structures to prevent danger)
- Warm in Winter, Cool in Summer: Our Heavy Duty Ceiling Insulated Panels offer excellent sound insulation, earthquake resistance, and fire resistance. When used as roofing panels, they not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also provide warmth in winter and coolness in summer, enhancing your living comfort
- Easy to Install: These metal tiles are vibrantly colored and easy to install. They are suitable not only for building roofs, but also for outdoor kennels, warehouses, high-end restaurants, sunrooms, carports, garden sheds, mobile homes, hotel roofs, animal farm roofs, and more
There is no single material that is best for every roof. Use proposals to compare documented impact-test scope alongside these practical considerations:
- Compatibility: whether the covering and its installation details suit your roof’s slope, structure, decking, ventilation and drainage.
- Installer capability and availability: whether qualified contractors in your area regularly install the proposed system and can source its components.
- Service life and warranty: what the manufacturer covers, what is excluded, and how hail or cosmetic damage is treated.
- Weight, appearance and upkeep: whether the structure can carry the material and whether its look, maintenance needs and repairability suit the home.
- Total installed cost: whether the quote includes underlayment, flashing, ridge and hip details, ventilation, tear-off and disposal, plus any deck repairs.
Ask contractors to itemize those components so you are comparing complete roof-system proposals, not just the price of the visible covering. Available evidence does not establish a neutral, directly comparable cost-and-performance ranking across these materials for prairie homes.

Confirm code and permits locally
Building-code adoption and permit requirements depend on where the home is located. Saskatchewan states that its adoption of the 2020 National Building Code and related codes took effect January 1, 2024; this does not establish requirements for every municipality or for Alberta and Manitoba. Check with your local building authority before work begins, and ask the contractor to confirm which requirements apply to the proposed roof system: Government of Saskatchewan building codes and standards.
Ask your insurer before choosing or installing
Do not assume a hail-resistant roof will earn a premium discount. GAF says discounts, when available, vary by insurer and location, and advises contacting the insurance agent before installation. It also notes that a carrier may require a cosmetic-damage waiver for a discount; such a waiver may limit coverage for hail damage that does not cause a leak.

Ask your insurer to explain, in writing if possible, how the proposed material affects discounts, deductibles, cosmetic-damage coverage, roof-age rules, endorsements and claim settlement terms. Aviva describes a roof-and-siding endorsement for hail, wind and ice, snow or sleet weight in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Its materials describe up to $2,500 for hail-resistant materials after an insured loss under that specific coverage, subject to policy terms. This is not a general provincial benefit; request the current wording and confirm what applies to your own policy: Aviva hail protection information.
