Compare its home energy, transportation, and waste totals to see which included category is largest for your household. The result is an educational estimate—not a complete or precise account of everything your household causes.
What the EPA calculator counts—and what it leaves out
The EPA tool organizes its estimate into three categories: home energy, transportation, and waste. It is intended for U.S. households, and the ZIP code helps determine the relevant electricity emissions factors. EPA says the calculator was designed primarily as an educational tool and “does not produce precise estimates.” Its result is useful for spotting likely priorities, not for treating a household total as an audited measurement.

The estimate does not represent every source of household emissions. EPA identifies air travel and food as examples of sources it does not cover. Its waste estimate can account for food waste handling within its waste methodology, but not the emissions from producing and distributing food. The calculator therefore should not be described as a full consumption or lifecycle footprint.
There is no single official EPA average for total household emissions. EPA’s equivalencies material gives an illustrative energy-only calculation of 7.45 metric tons of CO2 per home per year, based on 2022 U.S. household energy consumption and national averages for electricity and home fuels. That figure excludes transportation and waste, and it is not a prediction for your home. See the EPA calculations and references for its scope and inputs.

What information to gather before calculating
Use a representative 12-month period where possible. Physical consumption figures from bills are preferable to spending amounts: the calculator converts dollars using assumed average energy prices, so a price change can distort the estimate even if your usage did not change.
- Location and household size: Have your U.S. ZIP code and the number of people in the household available.
- Home energy: Collect electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh), plus natural gas, fuel oil, and propane consumption in the units shown on your bills. Keep the billing period clear and convert to an annual total if necessary.
- Vehicles: List the vehicles used by household members, their miles driven over the year, and fuel economy. Use your actual vehicle records when available; the calculator’s guidance points to fueleconomy.gov for rated efficiency.
- Waste and recycling: Gather the material categories and recycling information the calculator requests. Treat these as approximate household inputs rather than a precise audit of what actually leaves your bins.
How to calculate your household estimate
- Open the EPA Household Carbon Footprint Calculator. It is intended for U.S. households; use a locally appropriate tool and emissions factors if you live elsewhere.
- Enter household size and ZIP code. Location matters because electricity emissions depend on the regional generation mix, not just the number of kWh consumed.
- Enter home-energy use. Use annual kWh and quantities of natural gas, fuel oil, and propane from bills when available. Avoid substituting bill dollars unless consumption data cannot be found.
- Enter vehicle activity. Include vehicle miles and fuel economy as requested. Keep in mind that the calculator’s vehicle figures are tailpipe-oriented; they are not directly interchangeable with estimates that include fuel production and delivery.
- Complete the waste and recycling inputs. Select the material categories that best represent your household. EPA’s assumptions model selected recyclable materials as if 100% were recycled, so this portion is not a measurement of your actual recycling rate.
- Review the category breakdown. Compare home energy, transportation, and waste, then inspect the detail within the largest category. A large home-energy result, for example, may be driven mainly by electricity or by direct heating fuel.
How to identify your biggest source
There is no universal largest category. Your result depends on electricity consumption and the local grid mix, heating fuel and demand, driving distance and vehicle efficiency, waste practices, and which sources the calculator includes. EPA itself notes that “Everyone’s carbon footprint is different depending on their location, habits, and personal choices.” The useful answer is the largest category in your household’s own estimate—not a generic claim that electricity, driving, or heating is always number one.

Read the category total alongside its subcomponents before choosing an action. For electricity, kWh and the regional power mix both matter. For direct home fuels, the amount burned and fuel type matter, while climate, insulation, and heating equipment influence how much a home uses. For transportation, miles and fuel economy shape tailpipe emissions. Waste results depend on material choices and the model’s lifecycle assumptions.

Those values belong to that specific calculation. A household’s electricity emissions depend on its own use and regional factors, and a universal national factor should not be presented as locally precise. EPA’s assumptions describe use of eGRID subregional factors; its GHG Emission Factors Hub lists a January 2025 update, a separate factor vintage rather than a reason to combine data years silently.

Choose a reduction action that matches the result
Start with the measured source that is both large and practical to influence. EPA lists possible actions including thermostat schedule changes, green power where available, efficient lighting and appliances, reduced driving, and recycling. Its calculator’s default savings assumptions are not a promise of what a particular household will save; fit depends on the home, equipment, utility options, and behavior.
- If direct heating or cooling energy is prominent: Try a manual thermostat schedule adjustment first, where it suits your comfort and system. A programmable thermostat can automate schedule changes, but buying one is not required and compatibility varies by heating and cooling system. Larger changes such as a more efficient furnace, boiler, or windows make sense only after confirming that the home’s energy breakdown points to that need.
- If electricity is prominent: Consider efficient lighting or appliances when replacing items, and check whether your utility or supplier offers a green-power option. Green power availability varies by location; reducing electricity use and changing its source are distinct approaches.
- If transportation is prominent: Look at whether some trips can be combined, shortened, or made without driving, and focus on the vehicle activity that actually dominates your household’s estimate.
- If waste is prominent: Use the calculator’s material categories to identify relevant recycling opportunities, while remembering that its assumed full recycling for selected materials may not match local collection or actual sorting.
How precise is the result?
Several boundaries and data vintages affect interpretation. EPA’s calculator assumptions draw on inputs that are not all from one year: residential fuel defaults cite 2020 survey data, vehicle statistics include 2022 data, and emissions factors include EPA 2024 material. The calculator’s electricity, home-fuel, vehicle, and waste methods also measure different things. Treat the output as a consistent starting point for comparison within the tool, not a precise inventory with a single current-year basis.

For example, the EPA equivalencies methodology lists natural gas at 0.0550 kg CO2 per cubic foot in its 2024 reference data. That coefficient only makes sense when used with matching units and scope; it is not a universal conversion for every footprint boundary. Likewise, the vehicle calculation is tailpipe-focused, while fueleconomy.gov may show wider fuel-lifecycle estimates. Do not combine those numbers as if they were measured on the same basis.

EPA’s calculator assumptions also present indicative typical category values tied to older survey inputs: electricity at about 881 kWh per month is listed as 8,744 pounds CO2e per year; natural gas at 4,717 cubic feet per month as 6,853 pounds CO2 per year; fuel oil at 42 gallons per month as 11,386 pounds CO2 per year; and propane at 32 gallons per month as 4,906 pounds CO2 per year. These figures are not a current, universal household total and should not be added together as though they describe one representative home. Their household basis, units, data vintage, and methods differ. The more useful comparison is your own calculator output, interpreted within its stated boundaries. See EPA’s calculator assumptions and references.

If you live outside the United States
Do not transfer the EPA calculator’s ZIP-code defaults or U.S. emissions factors to another country. Electricity generation mixes, fuel reporting units, vehicle data, and waste systems differ by location. Find a calculator or emissions factors designed for your country or region, and check whether it includes the same categories before comparing results.
