Choose billing software by checking whether it captures the invoice details your transactions require, supports the return and e-invoice workflows you actually use, and fits your existing accounting process. A software label such as “GST-compliant” is not a guarantee of compliance: obligations depend on your registration status, transactions and current rules. Confirm your situation with official guidance or a qualified tax professional.
Start with the GST invoice details your business needs
CBIC’s tax-invoice rules specify particulars an invoice must support. Depending on the transaction, these include the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number unique for the financial year; issue date; recipient details; HSN code for goods or Accounting Code for services; description; quantity and unit for goods; total value; tax rates and amounts; place of supply for inter-State trade; reverse-charge status; and the supplier’s or authorised representative’s signature. Additional requirements and exceptions apply, including in some cases involving unregistered recipients and exports. See CBIC’s invoice rules and confirm which particulars apply to your transactions.

When assessing a product, check that you can record and produce the fields and document types relevant to your business—not just that it offers a GST invoice template. Consider whether your staff can enter customer and item details consistently, whether invoice numbering works for your financial year, and whether you can correct errors through an appropriate process.

Returns and filing
Ask how the software supports the filing workflow used by your business and accountant. It may provide filing through an integration, prepare data for export, or leave filing to another system. Confirm which forms and steps are supported, what information needs review, and whether the product’s current setup fits your accountant’s process.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily create invoices, orders, and quotes and customize them including logo, heading text, notes and more
- Access the web interface on mobile devices secure and safe
- Email, print and fax direct from the application
- Loaded with invoice templates and presets
- Manage all your customer accounts and information
For example, Zoho Invoice’s India product page documents GSTR-1 filing through API access and GSTR-3B export. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independently tested outcomes or a recommendation for every business. Check the current feature details with the vendor at Zoho Invoice’s India GST page.
E-invoicing and e-way bills
For businesses to which e-invoicing applies, it is a GSTN authentication and reporting workflow for applicable B2B invoices through an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP). The National Informatics Centre (NIC) describes the invoice information moving to the GST portal and e-way bill portal, which can reduce manual entry in connected workflows. Read its explanation at NIC’s e-invoice FAQ.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
- 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
Ask whether the software connects to the IRP, which documents and data it handles, and whether the feature is available on your chosen plan. Zoho Billing’s help page describes pushing invoices to the IRP and receiving an IRN and QR code, and says the feature is limited to certain plans. Treat that as product documentation, not a statement of current legal thresholds or a guarantee that the feature is included in every plan. Verify the current requirements and plan details directly: Zoho Billing e-invoicing help.
Accounting and exports
Check whether records move cleanly into the bookkeeping system your business already uses. Confirm export formats, the information included, and whether your accountant can work with the exported records. Zoho Invoice documents XML export for Tally on its India GST page; confirm current compatibility and whether it suits your setup.

Compare products against your actual operations
Before choosing a plan, make a short checklist based on how your business sells, records and files transactions. Ask each vendor the same questions and request clarification where a feature depends on a plan or integration.
- Invoice and document coverage: Can it capture the applicable fields and produce the invoice types your transactions require?
- Returns workflow: Does it support the filing or export process your accountant and business use? Which steps still happen elsewhere?
- E-invoice and e-way bill needs: If applicable, does it connect to the IRP and support the documents and data flow you need? Which plan includes the feature?
- Accounting fit and portability: Does it work with your bookkeeping process, and can you export usable records if you change systems?
- Day-to-day capacity: Check invoice volume, users, locations, inventory needs, offline requirements, backups, access controls and support against current vendor information.
- Total cost: Compare the current price of the plan and any required add-ons or integrations, rather than assuming a feature shown on a product page is included.
For specialised transactions, including some e-commerce activity, registration and tax handling can depend on the facts of the business. CBIC’s FAQ includes e-commerce-specific qualifications; use it as a starting point and confirm your own case against current rules: CBIC GST FAQs.

- Create invoices, quotes and orders quickly and professionally
- Automate recurring invoices and statements to save time
- Easily add multiple users and multiple businesses, enable remote access to view your data anwhere
- Print, email or fax invoices directly to clients for faster payment
- Use reports to track payments, overdue accounts, performance and more
Make a decision without treating a feature list as a compliance guarantee
- Map your transactions. List what you sell, where your customers are, and any specialised transaction types. Confirm your registration and applicable obligations with official guidance or a qualified tax professional.
- Turn obligations into a checklist. Identify the invoice fields, documents, return workflow and any e-invoice or e-way bill steps your situation requires.
- Compare the exact plans. Ask vendors to identify which plan and integrations provide each needed capability. Confirm details directly, particularly for e-invoicing.
- Test your working process. Where a trial or demonstration is available, walk through a representative invoice and the handoff to accounting or filing. Check that your team can review and export the records it needs.
- Keep a fallback for records. Confirm how to export and retain your business data, and who can access it, before relying on a new system.
A product’s own page can establish what the vendor says its software offers; it cannot establish that the product fits every business, that every capability is on every plan, or that it guarantees legal compliance. NIC identifies interoperability as a benefit of e-invoicing: “E-invoices created on one software can be read by another, allowing interoperability and help reduce data entry errors.” That can help connected workflows, but you still need to check the fit of your chosen setup.
