Start by identifying your Mac’s exact model and whether it has an Intel processor or Apple silicon; Tahoe features and compatibility depend on the model, and battery advice applies only to MacBooks. Then separate the problem: slow overall, one slow app, heat or fan noise, or battery draining quickly. Check battery condition before treating worn hardware as a settings problem.
Identify your Mac and what is actually slow
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac to find the model, year, and processor. Check the model against Apple’s macOS Tahoe compatibility list rather than assuming every older Mac can run Tahoe. Apple lists MacBook Air models with Apple silicon introduced in 2020 or later; MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon introduced in 2020 or later, plus the 13-inch 2020 model with four Thunderbolt 3 ports and the 16-inch 2019 model; Mac mini and iMac models introduced in 2020 or later; Mac Studio models introduced in 2022 or later; and Mac Pro models introduced in 2019 or later.

Describe the symptom before changing settings. A MacBook that runs down quickly calls for battery and power checks; a desktop Mac has no battery-runtime issue. If only one app is slow, investigate that app or its workload rather than changing system-wide settings. Heat or fan noise can point to a demanding workload or an environmental issue, but neither alone proves the Mac needs replacement.

Before installing a macOS upgrade, make a current backup. Apple recommends backing up and identifies Time Machine with an external storage device as one option. To check for available compatible updates, open System Settings > General > Software Update. Apple says Software Update presents updates compatible with the Mac and may require less storage than other installation methods. See Apple’s macOS download and installation guidance.

An update is not a guaranteed speed fix. Check the update’s release information for a fix relevant to your symptom; otherwise, treat updating as the supported way to receive compatible software updates, not a promise that an older Mac will become faster.
Choose power settings for the task
On a MacBook, open System Settings > Battery and select Low Power Mode when longer battery runtime matters more than peak responsiveness. Apple Support says, “Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life.” If you are doing sustained demanding work and responsiveness matters more, return to Automatic, the default balance described by Apple. The available choices and behavior can vary by model; do not assume every Tahoe Mac supports every power-mode feature. See About Power Modes on your Mac.

Reduce avoidable battery drain
- Lower display brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable to use.
- Quit apps you are not using and disconnect peripherals you do not need.
- Turn Wi‑Fi off only when you do not need network access; Wi‑Fi uses power even when it is not connecting to a network.
- Keep the MacBook within Apple’s recommended operating temperature range of 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C), and avoid hot environments or blocked airflow.
These are ways to reduce avoidable energy use, not guaranteed percentage gains. Apple’s guidance is available in Batteries – Maximizing Performance.
Check battery health before considering service
Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity as they chemically age. Apple says this can reduce both battery life and peak performance; temperature history and charging patterns are among the factors that affect aging. Check Battery Health or any service indication in Battery settings. If macOS reports service is recommended, or capacity no longer meets your needs, investigate service for your exact model rather than buying a generic replacement: battery parts and repair routes are model-specific.

Two charging features have different purposes and requirements. Optimized Battery Charging is available with macOS Big Sur 11 or later and can learn charging routines, delaying charging past 80% in some situations. Charge Limit requires macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later and Apple silicon; Apple documents selectable limits from 80% to 100%. For general sluggishness, first determine whether it is confined to one app or appears across the system. Activity Monitor is a built-in place to investigate which processes are using resources, but a high resource reading alone does not establish what should be removed or changed. Also consider available storage, heat and airflow, and whether battery health or another component needs attention.

There is no universal cleanup setting established here that makes an older Tahoe Mac faster. Avoid third-party cleaner utilities, disabling system protections, or forcing an unsupported macOS installation as default fixes. Make changes only when a specific diagnosis supports them, and prefer reversible steps.
