A secure heel and midfoot, comfortable toe room, and stable feel matter over a long round; spikeless shoes often suit dry, firm courses, while spiked shoes can be a better fit for wet, soft, hilly terrain. If you regularly walk through dew or rain, check the specific shoe’s water claim and warranty.
Start with fit, not the shoe category
A shoe that holds your heel but pinches your toes is not a good walking fit. Look for a snug heel and midfoot without painful pressure, with enough width and length for your toes to move.

- Try shoes on with the socks you normally wear for golf.
- Measure both feet and use the larger foot as your starting point when comparing sizes.
- Compare widths as well as lengths; foot shape and sizing can vary between models.
- Walk in each pair. Notice heel movement, pressure points, and whether the shoe bends comfortably where your foot does.
Do not assume the softest cushioning or a familiar brand will be the most comfortable choice. Support, stability, heel hold, and flexibility all affect how a shoe feels during a round. Under Armour’s guide discusses fit, support, stability, and closure considerations, while Golf Monthly says its walking-shoe evaluations consider comfort, construction, stability, grip, and waterproofing; both are useful prompts for what to assess, not guarantees that one model suits everyone: Under Armour’s golf-shoe guide and Golf Monthly’s walking-shoe guide.

Match the sole to your usual course conditions
Spikeless and spiked shoes make different trade-offs. Molded-tread spikeless shoes can be versatile for walking between the course and clubhouse, and are often a practical choice on dry or firmer ground. Spiked shoes are worth considering when the course is wet, muddy, soft, sloped, or when you want to prioritize grip. Actual traction depends on the shoe’s design and the ground beneath it.

| Decision | Spikeless may suit | Spiked may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Course conditions | Dry or firmer ground; flatter courses | Wet, muddy, soft, or hilly terrain |
| Walking and versatility | Walking between course and clubhouse; pavement use where the shoe permits | When maximum traction is a priority; typically more course-focused |
| Maintenance | Tread is molded into the outsole; inspect it for wear | Some designs allow spike replacement; confirm compatibility for the shoe |
In an adidas article, Masun Denison, its Global Footwear Director for adidas Golf, described spiked shoes as a good choice for golfers who play year-round, often face wet or muddy conditions, have a high swing speed, and want maximum grip. He also cited comfort and versatility as reasons for spikeless shoes’ popularity. Those are manufacturer views, not independent comparative test results: adidas on spiked and spikeless golf shoes.
Decide how much water protection you need
If you often play in morning dew or rain, look for a model explicitly labeled waterproof and read the warranty terms. “Waterproof,” “water resistant,” and “water repellent” are not interchangeable claims. adidas says its Climaproof golf shoes are seam-sealed and water resistant, while RAIN.RDY is its fully waterproof line. Check the wording for the particular model rather than assuming all shoes from a brand share the same protection.

Skechers says its waterproof-labeled models have a one-year waterproof warranty under normal use, while water-repellent-only models do not carry that warranty. That is a brand-specific policy, not a general golf-shoe warranty; confirm the current terms for the exact shoe before buying. See adidas golf shoes and water-protection terminology and Skechers’ golf-shoe guide and warranty information.

- Fit and width: Is the heel secure, the midfoot held comfortably, and the toe box roomy enough?
- Walking comfort: Does the shoe feel comfortable and stable after walking, not just while standing?
- Traction: Does the outsole match the conditions you commonly encounter?
- Water protection: Is the claim specific to the model, and does its warranty cover what you need?
- Versatility: Do you want to wear the shoes off the course, and does the maker permit use on pavement?
Weight, style, budget, and replaceable-spike compatibility can help narrow the shortlist after those basics. Product ranges and current recommendations change, so check current model details rather than relying on an old pick. For a broad sense of the demands involved, Acushnet Holdings Corp.’s 2025 annual report, filed in 2026, describes golf shoes as providing comfort, support, and protection over “over five miles” in an average walked round. This is the company’s description, not an independent measurement or a universal distance for every course: Acushnet annual reports.
