Choose cloud storage by evaluating two separate promises: whether you can reach your files when needed and whether you can recover them after deletion, corruption, or account compromise. Before comparing providers, set your acceptable recovery time and recovery-point age, then check redundancy, version retention, backup isolation, and restore procedures against those limits.
Availability, durability, and recoverability are different
Availability is whether data can be accessed when requested. Google Cloud defines it as “The ability to access data immediately upon request.” Durability is the protection against data becoming lost or corrupted over time; Google defines it as “Long-term protection to ensure data remains intact and uncorrupted.” Neither definition guarantees that you can undo an accidental deletion or restore a previous file.

Keep these questions distinct when reading a provider’s claims:
Recommended Free Tools
- Availability: Can you access data during an outage, and what failover or service commitment applies?
- Durability: What infrastructure redundancy is designed to protect stored data from hardware or site failures?
- Recoverability: Can you restore an earlier version or a deleted file, for how long, and who can remove the retained copy?
A durability figure is not an uptime SLA or a backup guarantee. For example, Google Cloud documents an 11-nines annual durability design target; AWS documents the same durability design target for Amazon S3. Those targets describe durability, not guaranteed access at every moment or protection from a user’s delete command. See Google Cloud’s availability and durability documentation and the Amazon S3 FAQ.

Set recovery targets before comparing services
A backup plan is only useful if it meets the time and data-loss limits that matter to you. AWS defines recovery time objective (RTO) as the acceptable delay between an interruption and restoration, and recovery point objective (RPO) as the acceptable amount of time since the last recovery point.
- RTO: How long can you wait to get files back? A short RTO may require a restore process that is fast, well-practiced, and accessible even during an account or service issue.
- RPO: How much recent work can you afford to lose? A shorter RPO generally requires more frequent backups or replication.
- Restore granularity: Do you need one file, a folder, an application, a volume, or an entire system restored?
Write down your targets in plain language—for example, how many hours of work you can recreate and how soon you need access restored. Then verify that backup cadence, retention, and restore options actually meet them. AWS outlines these planning elements in its backup strategy guidance.
Check what failures the storage design is built to tolerate
Redundancy has a scope. A service may keep copies across devices, zones within one region, or multiple regions. More geographic separation can help with broader infrastructure incidents, but replication may be asynchronous, so the newest changes may not yet exist in every location.

As infrastructure examples—not consumer file-sync plan comparisons—Google Cloud says regional buckets store data across at least two zones in the selected region and are designed to tolerate loss of one zone. Its dual- and multi-region configurations keep copies across regions. For the documented dual-/multi-region replication configurations, Google lists a 15-minute RPO with turbo replication and a 12-hour RPO with default replication. These are configuration-specific targets, not universal cloud-storage guarantees; confirm that the chosen configuration and current documentation apply to your use case. Details are in Google Cloud’s location and replication documentation.
For Amazon S3, AWS says the standard regional design described in its FAQ stores data redundantly across at least three Availability Zones. The FAQ also cautions that One Zone storage classes can lose data in a full zone loss. S3’s object-storage configuration should not be treated as a description of ordinary consumer desktop sync. Review the S3 FAQ for the specific storage class and design in question.
Does cloud storage count as a backup?
Not by itself. A synchronized or replicated copy can protect against losing a device or some infrastructure failures, but it may also reproduce a deletion, overwrite, or malicious change. AWS puts the distinction plainly: “S3’s durability system does not protect against accidental or malicious deletes.” It says a requested deletion is immediate and cannot be recovered by AWS unless the customer has configured additional protections.

For important files, keep a separate backup with its own retention and access controls. Google Cloud suggests possible destinations such as another region, another cloud, on-premises storage, or physically isolated tape or disk. A separate external drive can serve as an additional local copy if it is kept current and disconnected or otherwise isolated when not in use. The right choice depends on the risks you need to withstand. See Google Cloud’s guidance on its durability target and backups.
Find out how deletion and overwriting are handled
Look beyond a feature label such as “version history.” Confirm whether it is enabled, how long older copies remain, what actions permanently remove them, and whether a compromised account or administrator can change the retention settings.
Versioning and deleted-file recovery
Versioning can preserve earlier states of a file or object, but it is useful only while the required version remains retained. Google Cloud Object Versioning preserves deleted objects as noncurrent versions until they are explicitly removed. Amazon S3 Versioning can preserve prior object versions after an overwrite or delete, but customers must enable it. AWS notes that lifecycle policies can expire older versions and that normal S3 rates apply to each stored or requested version. Check the actual retention and lifecycle configuration, not just whether versioning exists. See Google’s Cloud Storage protection and recovery options and AWS’s S3 FAQ.

Retention locks and administrator protection
For ransomware or compromised credentials, ask whether retained copies can be changed or deleted by the same account and administrators who manage the primary data. Google recommends retention controls, audit logs, role-based access, least-privilege separation, and safeguarding encryption keys. AWS S3 Object Lock supports a write-once-read-many approach that can prevent object versions from being overwritten or deleted during a configured retention period or indefinitely, subject to retention settings or legal hold. These are infrastructure controls that require configuration, not automatic protections to assume for a consumer sync account. Read the relevant details in Google’s backup guidance and AWS’s Object Lock FAQ.

Consumer file-sync services and infrastructure object-storage products solve different problems. A consumer plan typically focuses on syncing and sharing files through user-facing apps; object storage exposes configurable infrastructure features for applications and administrators. Do not infer that a feature documented for Google Cloud Storage or Amazon S3 is included in a consumer plan from the same provider.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- How long deleted files and earlier versions are retained, and whether the duration varies by plan.
- Whether recovery is self-service, and whether recovery applies to individual files, folders, or the whole account.
- Whether retention can be extended, locked, or protected from account administrators.
- What happens to synced files when you delete or overwrite them on one device.
- Its published availability commitment, exclusions, affected geography, and whether failover happens automatically.
- How to export or restore a separate copy, and whether encryption-key loss could make stored files unreadable.
Treat a published availability commitment as a contractual term only after checking its scope, exclusions, and applicable plan. A marketing durability target alone does not answer whether a consumer account has a particular recovery window or availability commitment.
Use a practical selection checklist
- Define the data and threat: Identify which files are critical and whether you need protection from device loss, accidental changes, account takeover, or a regional outage.
- Set RTO and RPO: Decide how quickly you must restore and how much recent work you can lose.
- Verify redundancy scope: Check whether copies span devices, zones, or regions, and understand the failure scenarios each design addresses.
- Configure recovery: Enable versioning or backup where needed; choose retention that covers the period in which you might discover a problem.
- Separate control: Keep a critical backup in a different account, project, provider, location, or offline medium when your threat model calls for it. Limit who can delete both the primary and backup copies.
- Test a restore: Recover a representative file or dataset, check permissions and encryption access, and measure whether the real process meets your RTO.
- Review cost and lifecycle: Versions and replicas can consume additional storage. Make sure automatic expiration rules do not discard the recovery points you need.
Google Cloud’s overview lists options including object versioning, bucket and object retention locks, dual-region storage, turbo replication, cross-bucket replication, Backup and DR Service, Storage Transfer Service, and a physical Transfer Appliance. These options illustrate the range of controls available in its infrastructure product; they are not a consumer-plan feature list. See the Cloud Storage backup and recovery overview.
