For fast-moving adventure photography, start with continuous autofocus, choose a shutter speed for either crisp action or intentional motion blur, and shoot short bursts around likely peak moments. Then balance aperture and ISO to maintain the shutter speed in the available light. These are starting points, not fixed recipes: subject speed, distance, direction, camera controls and the look you want all matter.
Choose whether to freeze action or show motion
Shutter speed determines how movement appears in the photograph. A faster exposure reduces subject blur; a slower one can make motion visible. The appropriate speed depends on how quickly the subject is moving, how close it is and whether you want a frozen moment or a sense of movement.

For a sharp, frozen moment
Begin with a fast shutter speed, then inspect test frames for blur. Nikon Professional Services lists 1/500 second or faster among its sports settings for the Z 7II and Z 6II. Treat that as a starting point for those cameras and that context, not a guarantee: faster or closer action may need a faster exposure.

Sports photographer Lukas Schulze, in a Nikon UK profile published around 2024, reports preferring at least 1/2000 second for his outdoor sports work. That is his personal approach, not a universal threshold for adventure photography.

For intentional motion blur
Sony’s action guidance gives 1/50 to 1/100 second as examples of slower shutter speeds that can create a blur effect. Those examples are not universal settings; adjust for the subject’s speed, distance and the amount of blur you want.
For a panning photograph
Follow the subject smoothly through the exposure and use a slower shutter than you would for a frozen frame. Panning can keep the subject relatively distinct while the background streaks, making movement part of the image. Fujifilm’s moving-subject guide discusses panning as a way to communicate dynamism. Expect to refine the shutter speed through practice for the scene and subject.

Keep autofocus tracking the subject
Use continuous autofocus for a subject moving toward, away from or across the frame. Depending on the camera, this may be labelled AF-C, Continuous AF or Servo AF. Nikon explains that Continuous AF updates focus while the shutter button is half-pressed or AF-ON is held. Labels and behavior vary between camera models.

Match the focus area to the scene
- Unpredictable movement: A wider or dynamic focus area can help the camera keep tracking if the subject briefly moves away from your selected point.
- Obstacles near the subject: A more constrained point can help avoid focusing on something in front of the subject. Nikon’s guidance, for example, notes single-point AF around volleyball nets or swimming splashes.
- Precise control: A small focus point lets you choose exactly where to focus, but it can be difficult to keep on an erratic subject.
Sony cautions that AF-A may not switch quickly enough for fast action in some circumstances. If your subject is moving, choose a continuous focus mode rather than relying on automatic switching.

Balance aperture, shutter speed and ISO
Aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together to determine exposure. A wider aperture lets in more light, which can help maintain a fast shutter speed. If the lens is already wide open and the scene is still too dim, raising ISO can help preserve the shutter speed, though higher ISO can affect image quality.
Sony recommends increasing ISO when needed and suggests an f/2.8-or-faster lens for distant, low-light shooting in its support guidance. That recommendation applies to that context; it does not mean every action photographer needs a new lens. Lens suitability also depends on camera mount, focal-length needs, subject distance, weight, weather sealing and budget.

Choose an exposure mode for changing conditions
Shutter-priority mode can be useful when keeping a chosen shutter speed is the main priority. Manual exposure with Auto ISO is another option on cameras that support it. Check exposure after moving between shade and sun, and watch that automatic exposure adjustments do not slow the shutter below what the action requires.

Continuous shooting can give you several frames to choose from around a jump, turn, splash or landing. Nikon recommends Continuous H or Continuous H (extended) for the Z 7II and Z 6II settings covered in its sports guidance. Camera labels and available frame rates differ by model.

A burst’s duration depends on buffer capacity, file format, card support and camera performance—not just the advertised burst rate. Digital Camera World’s 2026 buying guide notes that RAW files take more space than JPEGs and can reduce the number of frames captured before the buffer fills. For the specific limits of your camera and compatible cards, consult its manual.
Use short, intentional bursts as the action approaches its peak rather than holding the shutter throughout an event. No single burst length suits every camera or activity. A compatible card may help with sustained writing, but its format and speed must match the camera.
Build a quick settings workflow
- Decide on the look: Choose a fast shutter for a frozen moment, or a slower one for blur or panning.
- Set continuous autofocus: Select AF-C, Continuous AF, Servo AF or the equivalent on your camera.
- Choose a focus area: Use a wider or dynamic area for erratic paths; consider a smaller point when obstacles could steal focus.
- Set exposure for the light: Open the aperture as needed, then raise ISO if necessary to maintain the chosen shutter speed.
- Capture brief bursts: Time them for expected peaks in the action, and review frames for focus, blur and exposure.
Examples are starting points, not universal recipes
The cited speeds come from different contexts: Nikon Professional Services gives a sports starting point for the Z 7II and Z 6II; Sony provides examples for creating motion blur; and Lukas Schulze describes his own outdoor-sports preference in a Nikon UK profile. They should not be combined into one recommended setting. Choose based on the action in front of you, then adjust after reviewing your images.
