Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose Game Pass if the games you want are included on a plan you can use, and the subscription’s total cost over your play period is lower than buying those games—after counting only benefits you would actually use. Buy games individually if you want dependable access to particular titles without relying on an active subscription or a changing catalog. Check the current library, plan, platform, and local prices before deciding; there is no universal break-even number.
Compare the right Game Pass plan, not just the service name
Game Pass has several plans with different catalogs, platforms, release timing, and extras. The US Xbox overview, checked October 3, 2026, lists these approximate catalog sizes and benefits; counts and availability can change and vary by region, plan, and platform.

Offers may be limited to new subscribers or selected regions and can renew at the then-current regular price unless canceled. Make a list of the titles you expect to play during the period you are comparing. For each game, confirm it is currently in the library for your region, plan, and device. A large catalog count does not tell you whether the games you want are there. Check release timing too: Ultimate includes day-one releases, while Premium and Essential do not; Premium has a limited timing commitment for select Xbox-published games, subject to the Call of Duty exclusion described above. Verify an individual title rather than assuming its inclusion from the plan label. Xbox notes that “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, Game Pass plan, and platform” on its Game Pass page.

Compare costs over the same period
Use the same games and the same time window on both sides of the comparison. Add up the subscription months you expect to pay, then compare that total with the current individual prices of those same games. Include discounts and add-ons only if you would actually buy them. For example, if you plan to play one title for a month, compare one month of the eligible plan with that game’s current purchase price—not the plan’s monthly price against the combined retail prices of a different set of games.
- Write down the games you expect to play and how many months you expect to subscribe.
- Confirm each game’s current library status on the correct plan, platform, and region.
- Multiply the plan’s regular local monthly price by the months you expect to pay. If you use a temporary offer instead, label it separately and check its renewal price.
- Add the current individual prices of the same games, including any planned add-ons or discounts.
- Compare totals, then include only the value of extra features you would otherwise use.
Prices, sales, taxes, and catalog contents change, so refresh the comparison when the games, subscription length, market, or prices change. A single fixed number of games cannot establish a break-even point for everyone.

Decide how much access certainty matters
Game Pass library access lasts only while the subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. Xbox’s FAQ says subscribers can access a library game until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. A title you buy separately avoids that particular catalog-membership condition, though you should still read the store license and platform terms that apply to your purchase. If you want to return to a specific game over a long period, weigh the possibility of a catalog change against paying for that title individually.
Count only benefits and devices you will use
A plan can be worthwhile for more than its games, but only if its extras fit your setup and habits. Compare the plan’s supported platform with where you play, and count benefits such as cloud gaming, included partner services, or online multiplayer for paid games only when you expect to use them. Xbox says games are sold separately, and its plan comparison says console multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player; a paid plan is not required solely to play those games online. See the official plan details for current feature eligibility.

When each option makes more sense
Game Pass may suit you when
- Several games you want are currently included in a plan that supports your device and region.
- You expect to play enough included games during the subscription period to justify its total cost.
- You value included features or services you would otherwise pay for and will actually use.
- You are comfortable with access ending if the subscription lapses or a title leaves the catalog.
Buying individually may suit you when
- You mainly want one or a small number of specific games, especially if their current purchase prices compare favorably with the subscription cost for your planned period.
- You want continued access to chosen titles without depending on their remaining in the Game Pass catalog.
- Your preferred games are not currently included in a plan that works for your platform or region.
- You do not expect to use the plan’s other benefits.
Recheck the terms before subscribing
Xbox says recurring billing is on by default. Its US plan overview describes a one-time refund right for the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. This is not an unconditional general refund promise: read the current terms and confirm eligibility before relying on it. Offers, plan terms, and catalog access can change; use the official plan page and Store listing for the current local details.
