For most browser multiplayer games with an authoritative central server, start with WebSockets: they provide a bidirectional client-to-server connection that fits sending player inputs and distributing accepted game state. Choose WebRTC data channels when direct peer-to-peer exchange is a real architectural need, or when you need to choose whether particular messages are ordered and reliable. Neither is a guaranteed latency winner; compare the complete design in the browsers and networks your players use.
How the connection models differ
A WebSocket connects a browser page to a remote server over a single TCP connection. The connection carries traffic in both directions, making it a natural fit for a client/server game: clients send inputs or commands, while the server processes them and distributes updates. The WebSocket specification lists gaming among its application areas. RFC 6455

A WebRTC data channel carries data between peers through a WebRTC peer connection. Under the protocol, data channels use SCTP over DTLS over UDP. WebRTC can support both unreliable, real-time game-state updates and reliable transfers of critical control information. RFC 8831 describes browser-to-browser data exchange and gives game-status packets as an example. MDN’s WebRTC API overview

These are different connection models, not interchangeable switches for making the same architecture faster. Decide first where game authority lives and which machines need to exchange data; then choose the transport that fits.

Which transport fits your game?
| Decision | WebSocket | WebRTC data channel |
|---|---|---|
| Topology | Browser-to-server, bidirectional connection over TCP. A straightforward fit when a central server owns authoritative state. | Peer-to-peer data exchange through a WebRTC peer connection. Fits a design that deliberately needs direct peer communication. |
| Delivery | Reliable, ordered byte stream. Later bytes cannot be delivered ahead of earlier bytes in that stream. | Application can select ordered or unordered delivery and reliable or partially reliable transmission. |
| Setup and operations | Fits a client/server service model. | Requires establishing peer connectivity; signaling and network traversal are part of the wider WebRTC architecture. The cited sources do not establish a universal setup-cost ranking. |
| Congestion and message size | TCP provides ordered delivery; the sources do not establish a comparative gameplay benchmark. | Congestion controlled. Large messages can delay other data channels when message interleaving is unavailable. |
| Security | Design authentication and security for your WebSocket deployment; the sources do not compare full application-security architectures. | Data channels are protected using DTLS. Transport encryption does not replace identity, authorization, or abuse controls. |
Choose based on authority and message meaning
Use WebSockets for a server-authoritative game
If the server validates player actions, owns the accepted state, or decides what every client should see, WebSockets are the practical starting point. Each browser communicates with the server, which can apply game rules and send updates to players. This is an architectural fit, not proof that WebSockets will outperform another transport in every game.
Use WebRTC when direct peer exchange matters
Consider data channels when clients need to exchange data directly, or when the game benefits from per-channel delivery choices. For example, a fresh position snapshot may make an older snapshot obsolete, while a control message may need reliable delivery. RFC 8831 explicitly identifies both unreliable real-time game-state information and reliable critical game control as use cases.

- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Do not select unordered or partially reliable delivery just because a message is time-sensitive. It is appropriate only when the application can handle missing or stale data; the game protocol still needs to define what each message means and how to recover when an update is lost.

A game could use a server connection for account services, matchmaking, signaling, or authoritative state while using WebRTC data channels for selected peer traffic. That is an option, not a requirement. It also means operating more than one connection path; use it only when the value of peer exchange justifies the added setup and operational complexity.

Design messages for freshness and bounded delivery
WebSocket’s ordered TCP stream can hold up later data while earlier data is recovered after loss. WebRTC offers unordered and partially reliable modes, but it does not remove the need to consider congestion, message size, or stale state.
RFC 8831 warns that, without SCTP message interleaving, a large message can monopolize an association and delay other messages. In that specific condition, the RFC recommends limiting message size to 16 KB to avoid monopolization. This is conditional protocol guidance—not a universal browser limit or gameplay benchmark. Check the negotiated limits and keep latency-sensitive messages appropriately bounded.

MDN’s data-channel guidance says modern browsers generally support sending messages of at least 256 kilobytes, but this is not a guarantee for every browser version or network. MDN also warns that large messages may cause head-of-line blocking across data channels when interleaving is unavailable. Check the negotiated max-message-size, avoid putting bulky payloads ahead of time-sensitive updates, and use the data channel’s outbound buffering and buffer-low event mechanism to manage queued data.

Protocol specifications explain delivery and connection properties; they do not establish which option will feel faster for your game. Test the actual message format, server or peer topology, and deployment in representative browsers and network conditions. Compare latency distribution, how old received state is, loss behavior, recovery and reconnect behavior, and server load. Include the browser and network combinations your players are likely to use.

Include setup and operations in the decision too: determine who handles identity and authorization, how peers find one another if using WebRTC, and what happens when a connection drops. A benchmark that measures only message transit cannot answer whether the complete architecture is reliable or manageable for your game.
