How to Choose Between The Elder Scrolls VI and Similar Open-World RPGs

The Elder Scrolls VI is in development, but Bethesda has not confirmed its setting, platforms, release date or gameplay systems. Here is how Skyrim Anniversary Edition, Avowed and The Witcher 3 match different priorities while you wait.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: you cannot make a feature-by-feature comparison with The Elder Scrolls VI yet because Bethesda has not announced its release date, setting, platforms, or detailed systems. Choose a released game according to the experience you want now: Skyrim Anniversary Edition for the closest same-series adventure, Avowed for first-person fantasy role-playing, or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for a story-led open-world RPG.

Bethesda says The Elder Scrolls VI is in active development and is the studio’s primary focus, but its official material still leaves the finished game unknown. The recommendations below are practical alternatives, not predictions about what TES VI will eventually become.

What is actually known about The Elder Scrolls VI?

Bethesda Game Studios’ current studio note says its teams are developing The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform the studio has been building since Starfield launched. Bethesda also says The Elder Scrolls VI is its primary development focus and that most of the team is working on it.

Bethesda’s studio listing gives the anticipated release date as “To be announced.” Official franchise and support pages call it the next chapter and still use “pre-production” language. That page-level label is older than the newer development note, so the clearest current description is an actively developed game without a public launch schedule.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition - PlayStation 4
  • EPIC FANTASY REBORN - Skyrim reimagines and revolutionizes the open-world fantasy epic, bringing to life a complete virtual world open for you to explore any way you choose.
  • LIVE ANOTHER LIFE, IN ANOTHER WORLD - Play any type of character you can imagine, and do whatever you want; the legendary freedom of choice, storytelling, and adventure of The Elder Scrolls is realized like never before.
  • YOU ARE WHAT YOU PLAY - Choose from hundreds of weapons, spells, and abilities. The new character system allows you to play any way you want and define yourself through your actions.
  • BATTLE DRAGONS - Battle ancient dragons like you’ve never seen. As Dragonborn, learn their secrets and harness their power for yourself.
  • INCLUDED CONTENT - The Anniversary Edition includes the core game, pre-existing and new Creation Club content, plus all three official add-ons: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.

That distinction matters when you are deciding whether to wait. “In development” confirms that work is under way; it does not provide a countdown, a launch window or a purchasing timetable. “Primary development focus” indicates Bethesda’s stated priority, but it still does not reveal how far the project is from release.

Bethesda’s published material does not establish the following:

  • A setting, province, city or historical period.
  • Confirmed launch platforms.
  • Combat, magic, crafting, faction, housing or progression systems.
  • World size, multiplayer features or a release window.
  • Whether the player character, camera options or quest structure will resemble Skyrim.
  • A price, edition breakdown, preorder date or subscription requirement.

Any article or video presenting those items as confirmed is discussing speculation rather than announced facts. Bethesda’s own current wording is encouraging but deliberately broad: “The next chapter is on the way. We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day.” It is a collective studio statement, not a quotation from a named individual and not a promise of a specific feature.

Bethesda reports that Skyrim has sold more than 65 million copies. That is Bethesda Game Studios’ 2026 lifetime-sales figure, not a forecast for TES VI and not evidence that the sequel will copy Skyrim’s design. The number explains why the predecessor remains a useful point of reference, but popularity is not a specification.

The three best choices, matched to different priorities

What you want to play now Game to choose What the official description supports Important limitation
The closest connection to The Elder Scrolls Skyrim Anniversary Edition Includes Skyrim Special Edition and Creation Club content such as quests, armor, gameplay modes, dungeons, bosses, weapons and spells. Bethesda lists it as available now. It is the predecessor, not a preview of TES VI’s unannounced design. Confirm the platform and edition before buying.
First-person fantasy combat and exploration Avowed Obsidian describes it as a first-person fantasy RPG set in Eora. You play an envoy investigating a spreading plague in the Living Lands. It is a separate world and franchise. The overlap is first-person fantasy role-playing, not a confirmed match for TES VI.
A story-led open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt CD PROJEKT RED describes an open-world RPG in which Geralt searches for Ciri. Its Remastered page highlights updates to visuals, performance, gameplay, combat and skills. Its authored story follows a named protagonist, a different structure from an unknown TES VI character-creation experience.

Choose Skyrim Anniversary Edition for the closest Elder Scrolls experience

If your main reason for waiting is to return to Bethesda’s fantasy world, Skyrim Anniversary Edition is the sensible first choice. It is the only option here from the same series, and it is listed as available now. You get the Special Edition foundation plus Creation Club additions, including extra quests, armor, gameplay modes, dungeons, bosses, weapons and spells.

Why it fits a TES-focused player

  • Familiar world and terminology: it continues the Elder Scrolls setting, history and mythology rather than asking you to learn a new universe.
  • Broad play styles: the official content list covers multiple kinds of additions, so you can approach the game through exploration, combat, quests or character development.
  • Immediate access: there is no need to wait for a release announcement or pre-order window.
  • Useful baseline: playing the current edition lets you identify which parts of Skyrim you value—first-person movement, open exploration, faction quests or spell use—without pretending those preferences reveal TES VI’s final systems.
  • Series literacy: revisiting Skyrim can refresh the names, history and tone that make an Elder Scrolls game feel distinctive, even though Bethesda may change those elements in a sequel.

What it cannot tell you about TES VI

Do not treat Anniversary Edition as a technology demonstration or design document for the sequel. Bethesda has not confirmed that TES VI will use the same quest structure, progression, combat model, camera options, map scale or content strategy. The games share a franchise context, but a sequel can change any of those elements.

It is also unsafe to infer the sequel’s technical scope from the fact that both projects are associated with Bethesda. The current note identifies Creation Engine 3 as a shared technology platform under development since Starfield launched, but it does not list TES VI’s graphics settings, performance targets, mod support or hardware requirements.

Check these details before purchasing

  1. Confirm that your console or PC storefront offers Skyrim Anniversary Edition.
  2. Check whether you already own Skyrim Special Edition; the upgrade path and included content can differ from buying the complete Anniversary Edition.
  3. Read the edition description for your region so you know which Creation Club content is included.
  4. Verify storage, account and platform requirements shown by your chosen store. Marketplace stock, SKU names and prices vary by storefront and were not established by Bethesda’s general availability listing.
  5. Compare the exact product title before checkout. “Special Edition,” an Anniversary upgrade and a complete Anniversary Edition are not necessarily the same listing.

There is no reliable universal cost comparison to publish here: Bethesda’s availability page does not establish current marketplace prices, discounts, regional taxes or bundle contents. Treat any price shown by a retailer as a temporary storefront offer and check what edition it covers.

Choose this edition when continuity matters more than novelty. It is the most defensible recommendation for someone asking for “games like The Elder Scrolls” while waiting, precisely because it is the one option that is actually an Elder Scrolls game.

Choose Avowed for first-person fantasy role-playing

Avowed is the better fit if the words “first-person fantasy RPG” describe your priority more accurately than “Elder Scrolls.” Obsidian presents it as a first-person role-playing game in Eora. Its premise follows an envoy investigating a spreading plague in the Living Lands, giving you a defined setting and a clear story situation without claiming to reproduce Bethesda’s formula.

Where Avowed overlaps with the request

  • First-person viewpoint: the official description directly identifies the game as first person, making it the strongest choice here for that camera perspective.
  • Fantasy setting: Eora supplies a different lore framework, but it meets the basic desire for a magical, non-science-fiction world.
  • Role-playing structure: the envoy premise places the player in a consequential role within the setting.
  • Multiple access points: the listed platforms include Windows, Steam, Xbox and Battle.net; a 2026 official announcement also covers PlayStation 5.

Where the comparison stops

Avowed is not evidence of what TES VI will look like. It has its own world, characters and narrative priorities, and the available official description does not establish that its map structure, character freedom, faction systems or crafting will match Skyrim or an unannounced Elder Scrolls sequel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that the words “first-person fantasy RPG” settle every practical question. They do not confirm a particular skill tree, party system, quest density, map size, mod policy or multiplayer mode. Those details need to come from Avowed’s own current product information, not from similarities in a headline.

Pick Avowed when you want to play a current first-person fantasy RPG and are comfortable entering a separate universe. If preserving Elder Scrolls lore, locations and continuity is non-negotiable, Skyrim remains the more appropriate choice.

Choose The Witcher 3 for a story-led open world

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt suits readers who define their ideal as “a large world with a strongly authored story.” CD PROJEKT RED describes an open-world RPG in which Geralt searches for Ciri. The Remastered edition page lists updates to visuals, performance, gameplay, combat and skills.

Why its structure appeals to some TES readers

  • Open-world travel: the official description places exploration in a broad world rather than a sequence of isolated levels.
  • Central narrative: the search for Ciri gives the campaign a specific dramatic objective.
  • Named protagonist: Geralt’s identity and history are part of the story, which can create a more directed role-playing experience.
  • Updated edition: the Remastered page identifies changes to performance, visuals, gameplay, combat and skills for players considering the newer version.

The key trade-off for Elder Scrolls fans

Geralt is an established character, so the game’s role-playing perspective differs from the unknown character-creation approach many players associate with The Elder Scrolls. You make decisions within Geralt’s story rather than waiting for Bethesda to reveal how much freedom TES VI will provide. Select The Witcher 3 when narrative direction and authored quests matter more than staying in the Elder Scrolls universe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official description also does not make The Witcher 3 a substitute for every possible TES preference. It establishes an open-world, story-led structure and the Remastered updates; it does not prove that its first-person play, character-building or faction interactions match Skyrim. Use it as a targeted choice for narrative emphasis, not as a claim of total equivalence.

Compare the choices by the experience you value

Use the following distinctions instead of asking which game is the universal “best.” They describe what is established about each released title and what remains unknowable about TES VI.

Decision factor Skyrim Anniversary Edition Avowed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt TES VI
Franchise continuity Elder Scrolls series Separate Eora setting Separate Witcher setting Next Elder Scrolls chapter
Perspective Existing game; choose the camera options provided by your edition and platform First-person, according to Obsidian Official description centers Geralt; the cited material does not establish a first-person mode Not announced
World and story emphasis Exploration and a large set of quests and added content Envoy investigating a plague in the Living Lands Open-world search for Ciri Not announced
Character freedom Existing player-character systems Role-playing as an envoy Role-playing as Geralt Not announced
Current availability Listed as available now Officially listed for Windows, Steam, Xbox and Battle.net; PlayStation 5 covered by a 2026 announcement Released; Remastered edition information is available from the developer Not available; release date to be announced
What is confirmed about TES VI similarity Same franchise, but no sequel design preview Overlap in first-person fantasy RPG play Overlap in story-led open-world RPG play Its own final design is unknown

A practical decision process

  1. Start with the setting. If you specifically want Tamriel and Elder Scrolls lore, choose Skyrim Anniversary Edition. If any fantasy world is acceptable, continue.
  2. Choose your camera and role. Select Avowed when first-person play is the deciding feature. Select The Witcher 3 when you are happy to inhabit Geralt, a named protagonist, in an authored campaign.
  3. Decide whether you need a game today. All three alternatives are presented as current games or current editions. TES VI has no announced release date, so it cannot satisfy an immediate-play requirement.
  4. Rank story versus self-directed exploration. The Witcher 3’s official premise is a specific search for Ciri. Avowed’s is an envoy’s investigation. Skyrim is the direct series option for players who want to explore an Elder Scrolls world without waiting for a new central premise to be disclosed.
  5. Check hardware and storefront access. Avowed’s listed Windows, Steam, Xbox, Battle.net and PlayStation 5 availability is platform-specific. Bethesda’s general Skyrim listing does not replace checking your own edition and device. TES VI platforms have not been announced.
  6. Check ownership before spending. For Skyrim, determine whether you own Special Edition and whether an Anniversary upgrade is offered. For Avowed and The Witcher 3, verify the exact platform listing and edition on your chosen storefront. No current universal price or affiliate terms are established, so do not assume one listing’s cost or contents applies everywhere.
  7. Write down what you hope TES VI includes. Separate personal wishes—such as a particular province, combat style or crafting system—from facts. Bethesda has not confirmed those features, so use your list to choose a released game that meets the underlying preference rather than assuming the sequel will deliver it.
  8. Reassess when Bethesda publishes specifics. A future announcement could change the platform, perspective or design comparison. Until then, keep today’s purchase decision separate from predictions about a game with no public release schedule.

Common comparison mistakes to avoid

Treating rumors as a feature list

Unverified claims about the setting, map size, factions, platforms, combat or release window can sound precise without being official. None of those details is established in Bethesda’s current public material. A responsible comparison labels them speculation or leaves them out.

Calling an alternative a substitute

Skyrim, Avowed and The Witcher 3 overlap with different parts of the request. Skyrim shares the franchise; Avowed shares first-person fantasy role-playing; The Witcher 3 shares story-led open-world design. None has been shown to reproduce the complete, unknown TES VI package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using sales as a design prediction

Bethesda’s report of more than 65 million Skyrim copies sold shows the predecessor’s reach. It does not establish TES VI’s budget, scope, launch timing, audience or mechanics.

Assuming “pre-production” means development stopped

The older support-page wording should be read alongside Bethesda’s newer statement that teams are actively developing TES VI and that it is the primary focus. Neither wording supplies a release date, so the practical conclusion remains the same: the game is in development, but waiting time is undefined.

Confusing an official platform list with universal access

Avowed’s listed Windows, Steam, Xbox and Battle.net options, plus the PlayStation 5 announcement, describe supported releases rather than guaranteeing identical editions, features or storefront terms everywhere. Likewise, a general Skyrim availability statement does not tell you which SKU, upgrade path or content bundle your account can use.

Expecting a price answer that has not been published

Edition names and regional storefront prices change. Because the cited Bethesda, Obsidian and CD PROJEKT RED pages do not establish a single current price comparison, check the retailer directly and confirm the edition, platform and included content before payment.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Elder Scrolls VI released?

No. Bethesda’s studio listing gives its anticipated release date as “To be announced.” Bethesda says the game is in active development and is the studio’s primary focus, but it has not published a launch date.

  • Explore a vast fantasy world filled with quests, dungeons, and legendary creatures.
  • Create and customize your character with countless gameplay possibilities.
  • Makes an essential addition to RPG, fantasy, and Xbox game collections.

Has Bethesda confirmed the setting or province?

No. The official material described here does not name a province, city, historical period or other setting details. Treat location claims as speculation unless Bethesda announces them.

Which game is most similar to The Elder Scrolls?

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is the closest choice by franchise context because it is another Elder Scrolls game and is available now. That does not make it a preview of TES VI’s mechanics or scope.

Is Avowed a replacement for TES VI?

No. Avowed overlaps in first-person fantasy role-playing and offers a separate Eora setting. Its official description does not establish that its world structure, systems or character freedom will match an unannounced Elder Scrolls sequel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose The Witcher 3 or Skyrim?

Choose Skyrim for Elder Scrolls continuity and the direct series connection. Choose The Witcher 3 if you prefer an authored open-world story in which Geralt searches for Ciri. The choice depends on whether setting continuity or narrative direction matters more.

What platforms will TES VI use?

Bethesda has not confirmed launch platforms in the official material covered here. Do not rely on retailer listings or rumors as proof of support.

Does TES VI have multiplayer, crafting or housing?

Those systems have not been established by Bethesda’s current public information. They should not be listed as features or used to rank alternatives.

Is Skyrim Anniversary Edition worth buying if I own Special Edition?

Check your platform’s upgrade path and the exact included Creation Club content. Buying the complete Anniversary Edition and purchasing an upgrade are not necessarily the same transaction, and regional storefront listings can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are there confirmed prices or affiliate deals for these games?

No single current price, tracked link, commission, cookie term or affiliate arrangement is established here. Compare the exact edition and storefront listing yourself, especially during regional sales.

Bottom line: pick the preference, not the rumor

Choose Skyrim Anniversary Edition when Elder Scrolls continuity is the priority. Choose Avowed when you want a first-person fantasy RPG in a new setting. Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when a directed story and an open-world search appeal most. Bethesda is developing TES VI, but until it announces the setting, platforms, release date and systems, no released game can honestly be called its complete equivalent.
