SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is a two-campaign package: a remastered SONIC GENERATIONS starring Classic and Modern Sonic, plus a separate new SHADOW GENERATIONS campaign. Choose it if you want both styles in one game; choose another Sonic title if its particular gameplay or story is a better match. Your platform, familiarity with the original Generations, edition extras, and current local price should settle the decision.
What you get in Sonic X Shadow Generations
Released on October 25, 2024, SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS pairs two distinct campaigns. SEGA describes the overall package as a one-player high-speed action adventure and calls it “two unique high-speed adventures in one incredible collection!”

SHADOW GENERATIONS: a separate Shadow campaign
SHADOW GENERATIONS is a new campaign, not simply a Shadow skin or a small add-on to the remaster. Shadow faces Black Doom, revisits stages from his history, explores an expansive hub, and uses Doom Powers for combat, water traversal, and platforming challenges. The two campaigns differ in protagonist and structure; SEGA outlines the Shadow campaign separately.
#1 Best Overall

- Spin dash through a greatest-hits collection of 3D and 2D versions of iconic stages from past Sonic games, now with updated visuals and reworked cinematics
- In this new standalone campaign, Black Doom has reemerged and threatens to take over the world. Shadow must journey into his past, confront his memories, and unlock new dark powers to save the world.
- Harness Shadow's new Doom Powers to battle hordes of enemies and tackle platforming challenges like never before. Surf on water, fly over obstacles, and stop time with the return of Chaos Control!
- Rescue Chao hiding in every level, rack up the highest pinball score in the Casino Nights zone, and check out the museum for behind-the-scenes art, music, and more!
Which Sonic game fits the experience you want?
The package is an easy fit if you want both a Classic-and-Modern Sonic stage collection and a Shadow-led adventure. If you are comparing it with another Sonic game, decide based on the specific gameplay and story that other title offers. The official information establishes what this package contains, but does not provide a complete comparison or ranking of every Sonic game.
- Choose this package if you want the remastered SONIC GENERATIONS campaign and the new Shadow campaign together.
- Consider another title if you are looking for a different Sonic game’s particular style or story rather than these two campaigns.
- If you already played SONIC GENERATIONS, weigh whether the new Shadow campaign and the remaster’s additions are enough novelty for you. SEGA identifies one campaign as a remaster and the other as new; how much that matters is a personal decision.

Nintendo Switch 2 physical edition
SEGA says the Switch 2 physical edition uses a game-key card, rather than containing the complete game install on the card. Playing for the first time requires broadband internet and a 24 GB download; additional storage may be needed for updates and other content. If you expect to play offline immediately from the card, account for this requirement. See SEGA’s Switch 2 information.
Standard, Digital Deluxe, or Collector’s Edition?
Choose an edition based on the extras you actually want, not on the assumption that a higher tier is automatically better value. SEGA’s launch materials list Standard, Digital Deluxe, and a Collector’s Edition for PS5 and Nintendo Switch; regional and platform availability can differ.
