Choose Skyrim if you want to roam a large fantasy world, set your own pace, and mix real-time combat with a character and play style you define. If you have a specific traditional RPG in mind, compare its actual exploration, combat, story, and character systems with Skyrim’s rather than treating “traditional RPG” as one fixed style.
What does “traditional RPG” mean in this comparison?
It is not one specific game or a single standardized design. A traditional RPG might emphasize a party, tactical or turn-based battles, a tightly plotted quest, or a structured progression system—or it might share several of Skyrim’s open-world qualities. The useful question is what you want to do during play, and how a particular game handles it.

Bethesda’s account of the series describes its history in terms of both real-time combat and travel freedom, and characterizes Skyrim as balancing a story with open-ended freedom. That describes design priorities in one series; it does not prove that every RPG outside it follows a contrasting formula. Bethesda’s Skyrim page presents exploration and freedom as central to the game.

| What to compare | What Skyrim offers, according to Bethesda | What to check in the other RPG |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration and travel | Bethesda describes a world open to exploration and highlights travel freedom and discoverable world detail in its series retrospective. Source: Bethesda’s series retrospective | Can you roam and discover at your own pace, or does the game direct you through a more defined route? |
| Combat | Bethesda describes real-time combat in the series’ history. The exact combat experience can differ across games, so consider the game you plan to play rather than assuming every Elder Scrolls entry is identical. Source: Bethesda’s series retrospective | Is combat real-time, turn-based, tactical, or built around another loop? Which style will you enjoy repeatedly? |
| Story and quest structure | Bethesda presents Skyrim as having a story alongside open-ended player freedom. Source: Bethesda’s series retrospective | Does the game prioritize an authored main story, optional quests, player-directed wandering, or a combination? |
| Character and play style | Bethesda says players can imagine different character types and choose among weapons, spells, and abilities. Source: Bethesda’s Skyrim page | How much freedom do you have to shape a build and solve encounters in different ways? |
| Scope and pace | Bethesda emphasizes a world open to exploration. That can suit players who want to decide where to go and when to pursue the main story. Source: Bethesda’s Skyrim page | Does the game use a similarly open world, a sequence of areas, or another structure? Does that structure fit the time and pace you want? |
When Skyrim is likely to be the better fit
- You enjoy deciding where to travel and what to explore instead of following a single required route.
- You want to shape a character around different weapons, spells, and abilities.
- You prefer real-time action and want exploration to sit alongside a main story rather than replace it.
- You are comfortable choosing your own pace, including spending time away from the central quest.
These are preference cues, not a promise that every player will enjoy the same parts of the game. Bethesda’s description reflects the studio’s design intent; it is not independent evidence that Skyrim is better than another RPG. In a 2017 article about Skyrim on Nintendo Switch, Game Director Todd Howard described the studio’s aim as making “games and worlds that you can get lost in, that you can make your own, and that you never want to put down.” That is Bethesda’s stated perspective, not proof of how any individual will respond.
When a different RPG may suit you better
- You specifically want a combat system—such as turn-based or party tactics—that the game you are considering handles in a way you prefer.
- You would rather follow a more directed story or a structured sequence of areas than choose your own route through an open world.
- You already know the other game’s character progression, party, or quest systems appeal to you more than Skyrim’s approach.
Do not use “traditional” as a shortcut for any of these traits. Check the actual game’s combat and progression systems; RPGs vary, and the label alone cannot tell you whether its pace or structure will be a match.

Do not confuse Skyrim with The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is another open-world RPG, but its online setting makes it a different choice from Skyrim’s single-player experience. ZeniMax Online Studios’ new-player guide, updated May 20, 2024, describes online-specific exploration, quests, leveling, combat, and travel among zones. Consider ESO if you want that online structure; do not assume its play experience is interchangeable with Skyrim’s.
