Choose shared CPU for variable or intermittent workloads that can tolerate changing performance; choose dedicated CPU when sustained CPU access and more predictable execution matter. The vCPU count alone does not tell you which guarantee you are buying. Compare the provider’s CPU rules, burst policy, memory, storage, network, region and total cost, then validate the choice with measurements from your workload.
What is the difference between shared CPU and dedicated CPU?
A cloud server, or virtual machine (VM), runs on a physical host through a hypervisor. The meaning of “shared” and “dedicated” depends on the provider, so check the specific plan’s terms rather than assuming every cloud uses the labels identically.
DigitalOcean defines a vCPU as a processing unit corresponding to one hardware hyper-thread. On its shared CPU Droplets, that thread may be shared with other Droplets. The hypervisor may provide more thread capacity as demand rises, but how much is available depends on other tenants’ activity; full-thread access is possible, not assured. DigitalOcean says its Droplets have dedicated RAM, disk storage and network bandwidth whether their CPU is shared or dedicated. These are DigitalOcean-specific definitions and guarantees, not a universal cloud standard (DigitalOcean’s CPU Droplet plan guide).
On DigitalOcean’s dedicated CPU Droplets, the full hyper-thread is guaranteed. In practical terms, the distinction is the assurance attached to CPU capacity—not the number printed beside “vCPU.” A shared plan can perform well when host neighbors are quiet, but that does not provide a sustained-CPU guarantee. Dedicated CPU reduces uncertainty caused by sharing; it does not by itself guarantee application latency, storage speed, network performance or end-to-end reliability.

Which workloads fit each type?
Shared CPU: variable demand and tolerated variation
Shared CPU is often a reasonable starting point when a service spends much of its time idle or lightly loaded, with occasional bursts, and changes in available CPU throughput are acceptable. DigitalOcean lists low-traffic web servers, blogs, forums, content-management systems, small databases, development and test servers, microservices and repository hosting as examples. Its newer shared v5 examples also include bursty data pipelines, background workers, CPU preprocessing alongside GPU workloads, and AI/ML orchestration. Those are provider examples, not a guarantee that a workload will meet a particular response-time or availability target (DigitalOcean’s plan guide; DigitalOcean Droplet pricing).
Dedicated CPU: sustained or time-sensitive compute
Dedicated CPU is more relevant when the workload needs a consistent CPU allocation during sustained or important periods of demand. DigitalOcean’s examples include production APIs and application servers, CPU-bound batch jobs, video and image transcoding, large-scale data processing, high-throughput proxies, streaming origins, relational databases, in-memory caches and game servers (DigitalOcean’s plan guide).

“Production” alone does not decide the choice. A low-duty-cycle production service may be fine on shared CPU if measured behavior meets its requirements and variation is acceptable. A non-production build farm or batch job may justify dedicated CPU if it runs heavily for long periods and completion time matters. Match the plan to workload behavior and consequences, not its label.
How do burstable plans and CPU credits work?
Some products described as shared or burstable spell out a CPU baseline and a credit system. In Amazon EC2’s burstable model, one CPU credit equals one vCPU running at 100% utilization for one minute. An instance earns credits when it runs below its baseline and spends them when it runs above it. Baselines and credit earn rates vary by instance type. For example, AWS lists a 30% per-vCPU baseline for t3.large and 40% for t3.xlarge and t3.2xlarge; those figures apply to those EC2 types, not to cloud CPUs generally (AWS burstable performance instances documentation).

AWS says T3, T3a and T4g instances launch in Unlimited mode by default, with a documented Dedicated Host exception for T3. In Unlimited mode, the hourly price covers CPU spikes if average utilization stays at or below baseline over the relevant rolling 24-hour period or instance lifetime, whichever is shorter. Prolonged average use above baseline can incur an additional flat rate per vCPU-hour. Therefore, a short successful test does not establish that a burstable instance can sustain the same throughput indefinitely or at the same cost. Check the exact instance mode, baseline, credit behavior, additional-use charges and monitoring metrics before choosing it (AWS documentation).
AWS Lightsail is a separate example, with its own rules. Its documentation lists per-vCPU performance baselines of 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% across different dual-stack plans; some of its larger listed plans burst automatically and do not use burst capacity. For instances with more than one vCPU, the Lightsail console averages utilization and baseline across vCPUs, so the instance-wide average can hide uneven load on individual cores. Plan terms and figures can change; check the current documentation for the specific plan (AWS Lightsail CPU credit and bursting documentation).

How to compare plans for your workload
- Confirm the CPU guarantee. Find out whether the provider describes CPU time as shared, dedicated or governed by another mechanism. Identify exactly what is guaranteed and what may vary.
- Describe the workload’s duty cycle. Is it mostly idle with brief spikes, or CPU-heavy for long stretches? For burstable plans, check the baseline, credit rules, throttling behavior and charges after credits are used.
- Measure representative work. Observe peak and sustained CPU use, response times or job completion times, and any CPU-related throttling. If feasible, compare candidate plans using a repeatable workload. A short peak test alone may not reveal sustained behavior or credit costs.
- Check the memory-to-CPU balance. CPU-heavy processing with modest memory needs may suit a compute-oriented configuration; a database or cache may need more RAM per vCPU. DigitalOcean’s plan families use different vCPU-to-memory ratios, so CPU allocation is only one part of the plan shape (DigitalOcean’s plan guide).
- Check storage and networking. Compare disk type and capacity, storage throughput, bandwidth and any network ceiling that matters to the application. DigitalOcean’s v5 documentation describes different network-throughput ranges for shared and dedicated configurations (DigitalOcean’s plan guide).
- Estimate the full bill at expected use. Include hourly or monthly VM charges, burst or excess-use charges, storage, data transfer, backups, commitments and applicable licensing. DigitalOcean says v5 Droplets are billed hourly without a monthly usage cap, while bundled Droplets have a monthly usage cap. AWS Unlimited burst use may add a vCPU-hour charge after prolonged average utilization above baseline (DigitalOcean’s plan guide; AWS documentation).
- Confirm region and upgrade options. Check that the exact configuration is offered in the required datacenter. DigitalOcean notes that v5 configurations are available only in supported datacenters and that v5 Droplets can resize to other v5 configurations, not to bundled plans (DigitalOcean’s plan guide).
What do example prices tell you—and not tell you?
When accessed on 4 October 2026, DigitalOcean’s pricing page showed example starting rates of $0.052 per hour for a selected 2-vCPU, 4-GB shared v5 Droplet and $0.181 per hour for a selected 4-vCPU, 16-GB dedicated General Purpose v5 Droplet. These examples have different CPU counts, memory sizes and workload positioning, so they are not like-for-like price comparisons or a survey of other providers. Verify current pricing and configuration details before budgeting (DigitalOcean Droplet pricing).
