If you want a console that stays by the TV, compare PS5 and Xbox Series X against your must-play games, existing library, disc needs, local prices, storage plans, and subscription costs. Hardware specifications alone do not make one the right choice for everyone.
Start with your games and where you’ll play
Write down the games you most want to play, then confirm that each is available on the console you’re considering. The sources available for this comparison do not establish a complete, current list of exclusive games across all three platforms, so don’t assume a title is available—or exclusive—without checking its platform listing.

Next, decide whether you need to play away from a television. Switch 2 supports handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. Nintendo describes it as able to “transform to suit your game style” on its Switch 2 features page. Xbox Series X is presented as a home console. PS5 and Xbox are therefore the closer comparison if your system will mainly stay beside a TV.

What Switch 2 offers—and what to verify
Nintendo Australia lists a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920 × 1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. The same specification page lists 256 GB of internal storage and TV output up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps at 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440. These are system capabilities, not a guarantee that every game runs at those resolutions or frame rates. See Nintendo Australia’s Switch 2 specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Switch 2 plays physical and digital original Switch games that are compatible, but Nintendo warns that some may not be supported or fully compatible. Original Switch accessories also do not all work with Joy-Con 2; some have limited, specific uses. Check Nintendo’s features and compatibility information and support guidance on original Switch accessories for the particular games and accessories you own. A Nintendo Switch Online membership can continue on Switch 2, according to Nintendo’s features page.
For extra game storage, Nintendo specifies microSD Express. An ordinary microSD card is not the supported format for Switch 2 game storage, so check the card type before buying.
What Xbox Series X establishes
Microsoft specifies native 4K output, a UHD Blu-ray player, and backward compatibility with thousands of games across four Xbox generations for Xbox Series X. Those are platform-level capabilities: resolution, performance, and compatibility can still vary by game. Microsoft also recommends a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card to add storage at the console’s custom SSD performance. Consult the Xbox Series X product information and verify the specific older games you want to play.

Choose a PS5 edition around games and discs
Decide whether you want a disc drive before comparing PS5 prices or features. The price snapshot below distinguishes the Digital Edition from a disc edition, but the official material reviewed for this comparison does not establish a full, directly comparable technical specification set for PS5. Check Sony’s current product details and the exact model sold in your region before relying on edition-specific disc support or technical claims.
Use prices as a dated local check, not a lasting ranking
A Pandromeda comparison published in September 2026 reported these US prices. They are a dated snapshot, not worldwide prices or a guarantee of current retailer pricing.
| Console or edition | Reported US price |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $499.99 |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $599.99 |
| PlayStation 5 disc edition | $649.99 |
| Xbox Series X | $799.99 |
These figures were reported by Pandromeda in September 2026. Before choosing, check official storefronts and retailers in your country. Bundles, sales, stock, and regional prices can change both the figures and their order.

Work out the cost beyond the console
Compare the whole setup you expect to use: the hardware edition, the games you intend to buy, any storage expansion you need, and subscriptions you actually plan to keep. Tom’s Guide treats libraries and subscription models as important parts of the choice, but its assessments are editorial guidance rather than official market measurements. Its console comparison is a useful additional perspective.
Subscription tiers, prices, benefits, catalogues, and cloud features vary by service, country, and time. Check the current official Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox service pages for your market rather than assuming a catalogue is fixed. A practical comparison is the expected annual subscription cost versus buying the specific games you plan to play; a subscription is valuable only if its current terms and selection suit you.
Make the final call
- List your must-play games. Verify each game’s platform availability and edition.
- Choose your play setting. If handheld or tabletop play is essential, Switch 2 is the option here designed for all three modes.
- Check your existing library. Confirm compatibility title by title, including accessories where relevant.
- Decide about discs. Compare the exact PS5 edition and determine whether you need Xbox’s UHD Blu-ray player or physical game media.
- Price your complete plan locally. Include the games, any storage expansion, and subscriptions you expect to use—not just the console.
If those checks leave PS5 and Xbox close, choose based on the games and services you expect to use most, not a spec-sheet claim that does not decide your actual experience.
