Nintendo Support says: “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” The important word is compatible: Nintendo notes that some Switch games may be unsupported or only partly compatible. PS4 games
A PS4 can play games from physical discs or digital downloads. Sony says disc games install from the disc, which must remain inserted to play. There is no reliable universal price verdict here: Switch 2 pricing and bundles vary by region, while used PS4 listings differ by model, condition, seller, and accessories. Compare current local offers on a like-for-like basis. Include any storage card or missing accessories you would need, and account for return or testing terms on a used purchase.

If online multiplayer matters, check the requirement for the particular game and your region before treating either console as the cheaper option. Sony says most PS4 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but some do not. Sony also says PS4 titles will be added only intermittently to PlayStation Plus game lineups and catalog updates from January 2026, so do not assume the service will regularly add PS4 games you want. How to assess a used PS4 listing
This is a practical checklist, not a Sony certification or warranty. Do not infer a console’s remaining lifespan from its model name alone.
