How to Choose Between Hall-Effect, TMR, and Mechanical Keyboard Switches

Mechanical switches use physical contacts; Hall-effect and TMR keyboards sense a moving magnet. Compare the technology, feel, features, and compatibility before choosing.

Choose a keyboard by how it senses a press, how its switches feel, and which features the board actually supports. Mechanical switches register presses through physical contacts; Hall-effect and TMR switches sense a moving magnet. Magnetic sensing can enable adjustable actuation and dynamic reset, but neither feature nor a particular typing feel is guaranteed by the sensor type alone.

How do mechanical, Hall-effect, and TMR switches detect a keypress?

Switch type How a keypress is detected What that means in practice
Mechanical Key movement brings physical contacts together, completing an electrical circuit. The switch model and board determine the feel and features. Mechanical keyboards have a long-established, broad choice of switch models.
Hall effect A magnet moves with the switch stem. A sensor on the keyboard PCB detects magnetic-field changes as voltage changes. Because the board can track key position, compatible firmware can support adjustable actuation and dynamic reset.
TMR A moving magnet changes the resistance of a TMR sensor; the controller and firmware turn that reading into a key signal. Compatible implementations can support adjustable actuation and reset features. CHERRY describes sensing actuation during travel and re-triggering as the key returns.

For a technical overview of Hall-effect and magnetic keyboards, see RTINGS’ Hall-effect keyboard explainer. CHERRY explains its account of TMR sensing in its TMR technology overview.

Are Hall-effect switches better than mechanical switches?

Not for every buyer. Hall-effect boards are worth considering if you want adjustable actuation or dynamic reset and the specific keyboard’s software implements those features well. A mechanical board may suit you better if your priority is a particular conventional switch feel or a wide choice of switch models.

Sensor type does not determine typing feel by itself. Switch construction and model matter, as do the board’s force and travel characteristics, sound, build, software, layout, and connectivity. Compare the actual switches and the complete keyboard rather than treating “magnetic” or “mechanical” as a feel rating.

EPOMAKER Creamy Jade Magnetic Switches, 70Pcs Factory Pre-lubed
  • Tip: The magnetic switch is designed for magnetic keyboards (Hall effect keyboards), not for mechanical keyboards.
  • Experience the Next Generation of Magnetic Switches: The Creamy Jade magnetic switch is a true blessing for Hall Effect keyboard enthusiasts. Designed as a linear Hall Effect switch for mainstream HE (magnetic) gaming keyboards, it delivers an incredibly smooth and responsive typing experience. Factory pre-lubed, it not only produces a deeply satisfying “thock” sound but also completely eliminates any scratchiness or gritty feel. Paired with a 20mm long spring, the rebound is quicker and crisper, making every keystroke feel sharp and decisive.
  • Precision Engineered Specifications: With an initial force of 30gf (min) and an end force of 55gf (max), and a total travel of 3.50±0.1mm. The initial magnetic flux is 95+15GS, and the bottom magnetic flux is 580+50GS. This force range ensures a light, agile feel during high-speed operation while delivering just the right amount of feedback at bottom-out, effectively reducing finger fatigue after prolonged use. The well-designed gradient between initial and bottom magnetic flux not only guarantees consistent triggering but also gives the switch its distinctive “thocky” deep sound profile.
  • Factory Lubed for out of the box smoothness: Factory pre-lubed delivers a silky smooth feel right out of the box, while tight manufacturing tolerances minimize stem wobble for consistent and stable keystrokes. Built-in light diffuser enhances RGB illumination for a vibrant keyboard lighting effect. The long-stroke, high-quality spring provides a fast and crisp rebound. Whether for competitive gaming or daily typing, this magnetic switch offers a premium experience that is stable, smooth, low-noise, and wonderfully responsive.
  • Built to Last: Rated for 100 million keystroke cycles, these switches are highly durable. Premium materials: POM stem for self-lubricating smoothness, PC upper case for excellent light diffusion, and PA66 bottom case for structural stability. The durable construction also contributes to a clean, satisfying sound profile that will elevate your typing experience.

What is the difference between Hall effect and TMR keyboards?

Both use a moving magnet rather than physical electrical contacts to detect key movement. The distinction is how the sensor responds: Hall-effect sensors detect a magnetic-field-related voltage change, while TMR sensors detect a resistance change associated with the magnetic field.

Keychron describes TMR as more sensitive and lower power than Hall effect, while also noting higher cost and a less mature supply chain; CHERRY likewise presents TMR as precise and efficient. These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent, like-for-like tests of complete keyboards. They do not establish that a buyer will notice a difference in typing or gaming. See Keychron’s comparison and CHERRY’s explanation.

Component specifications should not be mistaken for keyboard results. For example, Texas Instruments lists its TMAG5134 Hall sensor as detecting fields as weak as 1 mT and consuming as little as 0.6 µA; its comparison table lists a TMR component with a threshold of 0.3 mT and consumption below 0.05 µA. Those figures concern specific sensor components and configurations, not whole-keyboard power use, latency, or accuracy. The component comparison is in Texas Instruments’ technical article.

Can you use mechanical switches in a Hall-effect or TMR keyboard?

Do not assume so. Compatibility depends on the keyboard’s sensor and PCB arrangement, socket, magnet characteristics, and firmware. A hot-swap socket alone does not mean a board accepts every magnetic or mechanical switch.

Check the exact model’s manufacturer compatibility list before buying replacement switches. For example, Akko lists the 5075 V5 TMR as supporting magnetic and 5-pin MX mechanical switches. That is a claim for that board, not a general rule for other Hall-effect or TMR keyboards.

When is TMR worth paying more for?

Consider TMR if a specific keyboard offers the features, feel, compatibility, and support you want at a price you accept. Treat claims of greater sensitivity or lower energy use as potential advantages—not proof that TMR will improve your experience. If the distinction matters to your decision, look for independent measurements of the exact boards you are comparing; the manufacturer claims cited above do not provide an apples-to-apples keyboard test.

How to choose the right keyboard

  1. Start with feel. If you want a particular conventional typing feel or broad choice among mechanical switch models, compare mechanical boards and their actual switches.
  2. Identify must-have features. If adjustable actuation, per-key configuration, or dynamic reset matters, compare Hall-effect and TMR boards whose software explicitly supports the features you want.
  3. Compare complete keyboards. Check switch feel, layout, connectivity, firmware and software quality, support, price, and return terms—not sensor type alone.
  4. Verify compatibility. Confirm that the exact switches and keycaps you plan to use are supported by the board; do not infer compatibility from the words “hot-swap.”
  5. Pay for demonstrated value. Choose TMR over Hall effect only if the particular board’s documented advantages matter to you and justify its price. Do not treat component-level specifications or vendor comparisons as proof of a perceptible whole-keyboard advantage.
