The guide was updated September 7, 2026; the App Store lists version 2.0.12 on September 11, so the ranking may not reflect later changes.
What the September 2026 tier list says
Pocket Gamer’s guide ranks recruitable characters—the game’s equivalent of towers in other tower-defense games—by tier. Its September 7, 2026 update identifies version 2.0.11 as its reference point. The full placements are:

Why the ranking has a date and version limit
The list is editorial guidance, not an official developer ranking or a documented controlled test. The official App Store version history shows version 2.0.12 dated September 11, 2026, after Pocket Gamer’s 2.0.11 cutoff. That establishes that a later version existed, but not that it changed any of these characters. Treat the table as a snapshot rather than a guarantee about the current balance.

Those mechanics make a simple universal ranking especially incomplete: a character’s usefulness can depend on the role you need, the game mode and difficulty, and your progression.

What the guide highlights about top-ranked units
Lancelot for high-HP bosses
Pocket Gamer describes Lancelot as a magic-damage hero whose Flame passive adds damage based on the target’s HP. That makes him particularly relevant against high-HP bosses, and the guide calls him a must-have for harder content.

Kitty Mage for magic-team support
Kitty Mage regenerates allies’ MP, helping damage units such as Lancelot use their ultimate skills more often. Pocket Gamer calls her a staple in magic-oriented teams and recommends level 12; that level is the author’s guidance, not an independently verified universal breakpoint.

Why Penguin Magician’s C tier is not the whole story
“Don’t waste your time” is a blunt summary of the list’s overall recommendation, not evidence that Penguin Magician has no niche, cannot help at any progression stage, or will remain weak after future patches. A separate community guide ranks characters by role: it places Lancelot and Watt in S for boss killing, Vayne in A, and Zap in D, and says specialist boss killers matter most for the final few bosses on harder difficulties. These labels use a different framework and should not be combined mechanically with Pocket Gamer’s tiers.

That is a specific possible niche, not evidence that the character is broadly strong. The name varies across listings: Pocket Gamer’s title says “Penguin Magician,” while other references use “Penguin Musician” or “Noisy Penguin Musician.”

How to use a tier list when choosing whom to invest in
- Start with the job you need. Separate wave clearing, boss damage, support, and control rather than assuming one ranking answers every team-building question.
- Match the character to the content. A specialist may matter more in a particular mode or on harder stages than in general play.
- Check the patch context. The Pocket Gamer table is tied to version 2.0.11, while the App Store records 2.0.12 four days later. The available sources do not establish whether that update changed character balance.
- Use niche effects as evidence of a role, not a verdict. Penguin Musician’s Variation-related treasure effect may be relevant to a particular build, but it does not cancel the C-tier placement or establish overall strength.
The cited guides do not provide head-to-head performance measurements across roles, difficulties, or investment levels. Use their placements as editorial orientation, then judge whether a character addresses a need in your own roster.
