Choose based on what you want to carry forward: a preference for every chat, a reusable workflow, a project with its own documents, or a response style. Gemini Skills are built for reusable instructions that can be invoked or applied automatically; ChatGPT Custom Instructions and Claude profile preferences are account-wide; Claude Projects and eligible ChatGPT GPTs are better suited to focused workspaces with their own instructions and knowledge. Access differs by account and plan, so check availability before moving work.

These features overlap, but they do not all solve the same problem. Match the tool to the scope of the instructions and context you need, rather than comparing product names as if every option were interchangeable.

When Google Skills are the right fit
Choose a Skill when you want a repeatable set of instructions within Gemini rather than a single preference that should affect every conversation. Google says Skills can be used across chats, invoked by name or applied automatically, and combined. Google has announced that Gems will transition to Skills beginning in November 2026 for personal accounts. The announcement lists later dates for Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education accounts. As of October 4, 2026, the personal-account transition had not yet reached its announced start date. Check Google’s transition notice for the latest schedule before relying on it.
When an account-wide preference is enough
If you mainly want an assistant to remember a general preference—such as the level of detail or format you usually want—compare the global personalization controls rather than project tools. Gemini personal instructions, ChatGPT Custom Instructions and Claude profile preferences are intended to influence responses more broadly than a single workspace. Their exact limits and eligibility differ, so consult the respective provider’s current documentation before setting them up.

A response-style control is a narrower choice than a workspace: Claude documents Styles specifically for tone and format, while Gemini instructions or Skills and ChatGPT Custom Instructions or GPT instructions can also describe desired behavior and formatting. A style preference does not by itself provide the same function as a project knowledge base.
When to use Claude Projects or ChatGPT GPTs
Claude Projects
Use a Project when a body of reference material and instructions should stay together for related chats. Anthropic describes Projects as paid-plan functionality; on Claude for Work Team and Enterprise, projects can be shared with organization members according to permissions. ChatGPT GPTs
A GPT is more than a saved global preference: it can combine purpose-specific instructions, uploaded knowledge and capabilities. However, OpenAI currently says personal accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs. In Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, creation, editing and publishing depend on workspace settings and permissions. Check OpenAI’s GPT documentation before planning around one.
How to make the choice
- Define the scope. Decide whether the need is account-wide, a reusable procedure, a project with dedicated documents, or a response style. Compare products that serve the same scope.
- Confirm access. Gemini Skills are rolling out and have account and app limitations; Claude Projects are described as paid-plan features; personal ChatGPT accounts cannot currently create or publish new GPTs, while workspace access depends on permissions and settings.
- Check how documents work. Compare supported uploads, where file knowledge is available, and how updates are handled. A general preference instruction is not the same as a searchable project knowledge base.
- Account for collaboration and ecosystem. Consider where your documents and daily work already live, and whether coworkers need shared access. Sharing rules are product-specific.
- Recheck changing details. Rollouts, eligibility and product names can change. Current comparable prices and regional availability for all three providers are not established here, so there is no supported price winner.
