Choose email if you want to review fare updates in your inbox; choose push if your flight-alert service supports mobile notifications on your device and you want alerts surfaced there. Neither channel guarantees the fastest notice, and providers differ in which channels and alert rules they offer. Match the service to your route and dates, then check how it defines a price change.
What email and push alerts actually do
Email delivers a price update to your inbox, where you can read it when convenient. A push or mobile notification can surface through a supported app on your phone. The channel describes where the alert appears—not whether the fare is still available when you see it.

For example, Google says tracked flight or route prices that change significantly can generate email updates. Its Android help page also describes email and mobile notifications for significant tracked-price changes. That mobile-notification description is specific to Android; it does not establish identical availability on every platform. An alert may be triggered by a significant price change, a broader route-price condition, or any price change described by the provider. Those rules affect what you hear about and when; they are not interchangeable.

Read the alert settings before relying on them: “significant change” and “price changes” can mean different notification behavior. Google’s flexible option is useful if your dates are open; Skyscanner’s documented route-and-date alert is more specific. Learn how to set up Skyscanner price alerts.
Choose the channel that fits your routine
- Choose email if you prefer to collect updates in one place and review them later, or if your selected service documents email but not a supported push option for your device.
- Choose push when the service explicitly supports mobile notifications on your phone and you want an alert surfaced there. Google documents this option for Android; verify the available settings in the app and platform you use.
- Use both when offered if you want an inbox record as well as a phone notification. Availability and controls vary by service, platform, and possibly region.
Do not assume push is always faster than email: the reviewed service help pages explain channel availability and alert conditions, but do not establish a guaranteed delivery-speed advantage.

Check how to control alert noise
Before creating several alerts, find out whether you can pause or delete them and how to stop email. KAYAK’s help material documents controls to pause or delete alerts and an unsubscribe link in alert emails. Its older app announcement about push alerts for flight-price drops does not confirm current availability across app versions or locations, so check the current app rather than relying on that historical announcement. Verify the fare before booking
A notification is not a fare hold. Skyscanner warns that a fare in an email may no longer be available at that price by the time you open it; prices and availability can change within minutes or even seconds. Reopen the itinerary, confirm the dates and flight details, and check the live price before booking. See Skyscanner’s explanation of price changes.
