Choose memory only after you know which processor and motherboard you are building around. DDR4 and DDR5 desktop modules have different physical notches, so they cannot be substituted for one another: the motherboard must be made for the generation you buy. For a new build, compare the total cost of the compatible CPU, motherboard and memory—not the RAM kit price alone.
Start with the processor platform and exact motherboard
The platform narrows the choice before speed or price enters the discussion. AMD AM4 uses DDR4, while AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 are DDR5-only. Intel LGA1700 processors can be used with either generation, but LGA1700 motherboards are built specifically for DDR4 or DDR5; the processor socket alone does not tell you which memory a particular board accepts.

If you already own the motherboard, follow its specification. Check the exact model name and revision, then consult the manufacturer’s memory support information. Similar-looking board names can identify different DDR4 and DDR5 versions. A module that does not match the board’s memory generation will not fit correctly, and should not be forced into the slot.

Use your build situation to narrow the choice
| Build situation | Practical direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Existing AM4 system or AM4-based build | DDR4 | CPU and motherboard support, capacity, and a supported memory configuration. |
| AMD AM5 build | DDR5 | Exact motherboard specifications and memory support information. |
| Intel LGA1851 build | DDR5 | Exact board and processor memory specifications. |
| Intel LGA1700 build | DDR4 or DDR5, depending on the board | Confirm that the exact motherboard is the DDR4 or DDR5 variant you intend to use. |
| You already own a suitable DDR4 kit and want to control total cost | Consider a compatible DDR4 platform | Compare the complete CPU, motherboard and memory cost, and whether the resulting performance suits your workload. |
| High-refresh-rate gaming on an LGA1700 build | DDR5 showed an advantage in one recent comparison | Read the test scope: its results are not a universal forecast for other games or systems. |
Compare total cost, not just the memory kit
For a new build, price the compatible CPU, motherboard and memory as a package. A DDR4 kit you already own may make a compatible board attractive, but moving to DDR5 requires a DDR5 motherboard as well as compatible memory; depending on the platform, changing generations may also mean changing the processor. If you are comparing platforms, include memory reuse, capacity, workload performance and the upgrade path alongside current local prices.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
There is no durable, universal price winner. Tom’s Hardware described memory pricing as highly volatile in 2026 and excluded a fixed price-to-performance ratio from its hierarchy because prices vary. Check prices for your region when you are ready to buy rather than treating an old comparison as a current quote.
For gaming, treat benchmark gains as setup-specific
Tom’s Hardware’s July 2026 comparison tested DDR4 and DDR5 on Intel LGA1700 using an RTX 5090 at 1080p across 15 games. Across the tested CPU comparisons, DDR4 produced roughly 9–14% lower average gaming performance; individual games varied, and some showed larger differences. The result is evidence that memory generation can matter in that test setup—not a prediction for every CPU, graphics card, resolution, game or productivity workload.

Jake Roach of Tom’s Hardware summarized the result as “around 11% to 14%” of overall gaming performance given up when memory was the only variable changed. That statement refers to the article’s LGA1700 gaming test and should be interpreted within those test conditions. If gaming performance is important to your decision, compare benchmarks for the CPU and workload you actually plan to use instead of applying the percentage to a different build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck supported memory settings, not just the advertised speed
A kit’s advertised data rate does not guarantee that it will run at that rate in every system. The processor, motherboard, number of installed modules and selected memory settings all affect what configuration is supported and stable. Consult the motherboard maker’s compatibility information and the processor’s specifications before buying, especially when choosing a high-speed kit or populating multiple slots.

Make the final comparison with these checks
- Identify the exact CPU and motherboard. Confirm the socket/platform and the board’s specific DDR4 or DDR5 designation.
- Verify the memory configuration. Check supported capacity, module count and memory settings in the board and processor documentation.
- Price the whole platform locally. Include the CPU, motherboard and memory, accounting for any suitable kit you can reuse.
- Match the choice to the workload. Use relevant performance tests for your games or applications, keeping their hardware and test conditions in view.
- Consider the next upgrade. Decide whether keeping existing DDR4 is worth choosing a compatible platform, or whether a DDR5-only platform better fits the build you want.
