How to Choose Between Buffer and Hootsuite for Your Needs

Buffer offers a permanent free plan and per-channel billing; Hootsuite uses tiered plans and per-user pricing. Compare features and calculate your real team cost.

Buffer is the more straightforward place to start if you manage a few social channels, want a free plan, or prefer per-channel pricing. Hootsuite is worth considering when a team needs broader inbox workflows, brand monitoring, advertising tools, or advanced reporting. The key is to compare the total for your actual accounts and users, then confirm that the tier includes the work you need.

How Buffer and Hootsuite charge

Their pricing models use different units, so a headline price alone is not a useful comparison: Buffer charges by connected channel, while Hootsuite displays per-user/month pricing. Calculate the cost for your account count, team size, billing period, location, and applicable tax.

Buffer: free entry, then per-channel pricing

Buffer has a permanent Free plan for one user and up to three connected channels. The free queue allows 10 scheduled posts per channel. Essentials and Team are paid per channel; Essentials includes one user, while Team allows unlimited users. Buffer defines a channel as one social account connected to the service. Its paid plans allow unlimited scheduled posts subject to a fair-use cap of 5,000 posts per channel.

Buffer’s pricing materials list the following USD rates. Monthly rates are per channel; annual figures are per-channel equivalents. The pricing page says annual billing offers a 20% discount and was last updated in November 2025. Taxes may apply, and the live calculator should be checked for your country and channel count.

Channel band Essentials monthly Essentials annual equivalent Team monthly Team annual equivalent
Channels 1–10 $6 per channel $60 per channel $12 per channel $120 per channel
Channels 11–25 $4 per channel $40 per channel $4 per channel $40 per channel
Channels 26–50 $3 per channel $30 per channel $3 per channel $30 per channel
Channels 51+ $1 per channel $20 per channel $2 per channel $20 per channel

The annual-equivalent rates above are reported as listed in Buffer Help Center’s plan and feature details; verify the checkout calculator before purchasing. Buffer offers a 14-day trial of paid plans. Moving from Free to a paid plan bills all connected channels under the paid plan.

Hootsuite: tiered plans and per-user pricing

Hootsuite lists Standard, Professional, Advanced, and Enterprise. Standard supports up to 10 social accounts; Professional and Advanced list unlimited accounts; Enterprise is custom priced. Hootsuite’s plans page states that displayed prices are based on annual billing and exclude applicable taxes, but numeric tier prices are not available in the cited page information here. Check the live price and currency for your market rather than relying on a figure from a secondary article.

Hootsuite offers 14-day trials for its self-serve tiers. Trial accounts have daily posting limits of 10–20 posts per organization, depending on plan, and bulk scheduling is unavailable during the trial.

What each platform includes

Both tools support scheduling and publishing, but their differentiators lie in how they handle engagement, reporting, monitoring, and team workflows. Feature availability depends on plan, network, and account type.

Scheduling and publishing

Buffer Free allows 10 queued posts per channel; paid plans allow unlimited scheduling subject to its stated fair-use policy. Hootsuite Standard lists unlimited scheduled posts, although its trial has daily limits and excludes bulk scheduling. Before choosing, check the publishing methods available for each of your specific social account types.

Inbox and community engagement

Buffer’s help materials list a community inbox across Free, Essentials, and Team; Buffer’s own comparison describes its Community feature as comment-focused. Hootsuite lists one inbox in Standard, inbox automation and workflows in Professional, and message assignment and routing in Advanced. If direct messages or customer-care handling matter, confirm the networks and message types supported at the exact tier you are considering.

Analytics, monitoring, and advertising

Buffer describes Insights and cross-channel reporting, with paid features varying by plan. Hootsuite lists custom performance reports in Professional, team performance measurement in Advanced, and advanced analytics and listening in Enterprise. Its plans page also lists brand and competitor monitoring in Standard. Hootsuite’s comparison materials position its analytics, listening, inbox, and advertising features as strengths; these are vendor claims, not independent head-to-head test results. Verify metric definitions, date ranges, exports, listening limits, and which paid-ad functions are included before deciding.

Collaboration and integrations

Buffer Team supports unlimited users. Hootsuite makes additional user seats available on its self-serve plans, while Advanced adds content approvals and coordinated assignment/routing workflows. Hootsuite’s comparison page claims 100+ integrations; treat that as a vendor claim and confirm the integrations your team depends on. Buffer’s comparison materials cite support for Substack, Mastodon, and Google Business Profiles, while Hootsuite highlights WhatsApp and paid ads on selected networks. Support can differ by account type and publishing action, so check the current compatibility details for your channels.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Buffer if you are starting small

  • You are a solo creator or small business that wants to begin with a permanent free plan.
  • You manage a small number of channels and prefer a per-channel cost model.
  • Your workflow centers on scheduling, publishing, and a community inbox rather than extensive listening or approval routing.
  • You need collaborators: compare Team pricing against your number of channels, since its unlimited-user allowance does not make the channel cost disappear.

Consider Hootsuite for a broader team workflow

  • You need inbox automation, message assignment, approvals, or customer-care coordination, and the relevant tier includes those functions.
  • Brand or competitor monitoring, listening, or more advanced reporting is part of your work.
  • You use paid social capabilities or integrations that Hootsuite supports for your specific accounts.
  • You have checked the live per-user price, seat count, and plan limits for your region rather than assuming the advertised trial or tier headline reflects your ongoing total.

Make the comparison with your own requirements

Before switching or subscribing, write down the number of social accounts and users, the networks and account types you need, expected post volume, approval needs, inbox and direct-message requirements, analytics/export needs, and monitoring queries. Then match each requirement to a plan and price the total. This matters because the same channel count can produce different costs under per-channel and per-user pricing.

What the available evidence does not settle

Neither vendor comparison is an independent usability test or performance benchmark. There is no verified basis here for saying that one interface is objectively easier or that one service produces better engagement results. Hootsuite’s exact current numeric prices also need to be checked in the live display for the buyer’s location and currency. For current plan details, consult Buffer’s pricing page, its plan feature information, and Hootsuite’s plans page. Their comparison pages—Buffer’s comparison and Hootsuite’s comparison—are vendor-authored and should be read as product positioning.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
