1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose graphic design for a static visual, web design for a website or app interface, and animation when movement is essential to the idea. Start with the thing you want someone to see or do—not with a software menu—then make the smallest finished version that demonstrates it.
Start with the outcome, not the software
Before comparing tools or tutorials, finish this sentence: “I want someone to see or do ___.” The answer helps reveal what kind of project you actually have.

- If the answer is “understand this message from one image,” think graphic design.
- If it is “find information, choose an option, or complete a task,” think web design.
- If it is “understand an idea through a sequence or movement,” think animation.
Then name the deliverable as plainly as possible: a poster, a landing page, a clickable prototype, or a short animated title. A deliverable is more useful than a vague goal such as “learn design,” because it gives you something specific to make, finish, and show. Adobe’s guide separates image editing, vector design, page layout, and motion graphics into different tool categories and recommends choosing tools according to project type and requirements (Adobe Creative Cloud India).

These disciplines can overlap. A website may contain illustrations, and an animation may use a graphic designer’s typography and composition. For a first project, choose by the central job the finished artifact must do. If its main purpose is to communicate a static message, start with graphic design even if you later use the image on a website. If the central job is to help someone navigate, start with web design. If the idea depends on what changes over time, start with animation.

Compare the three paths
| Path | Best fit | Manageable first project | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graphic design | A static visual such as a poster, social graphic, logo, or illustration | One poster or social graphic with one clear message | Composition, typography, color, image treatment, and whether the design communicates at a glance |
| Web design | A website or app interface that helps someone find information or complete a task | A one-page landing page or small clickable prototype | Audience and purpose, information hierarchy, navigation, readability, and clarity of the main action |
| Animation | A visual whose meaning or appeal depends on motion | A short looping motion graphic or animated title | Timing, movement, sequence, and whether motion clarifies the idea |
The distinction is not that one discipline is more creative or more technical than another. Each makes you solve a different communication problem. Graphic design asks how to arrange visual elements so a message reads clearly. Web design asks how to arrange information and interface elements around a person’s goal. Animation asks how movement and timing can communicate or hold attention. Adobe describes graphic design and web design as related but distinct disciplines with different tasks and roles (Adobe Experience Cloud).
Use this decision process
- Write the viewer’s goal. Use one sentence, such as “I want a student to notice an event date,” “I want a visitor to find opening hours,” or “I want a short title to reveal a product idea.” Keep the sentence focused on the audience, not your desired software or technique.
- Identify the main deliverable. Decide whether the first version is a single visual, an interface, or a moving sequence. If the answer is still “a brand” or “an app,” narrow it to something you can finish: one promotional graphic, one key screen, or one short animated moment.
- Choose the discipline that produces that deliverable. A static composition points to graphic design; a usable or navigable screen points to web design; a time-based sequence points to animation. If two seem equally important, ask which one would remain if you removed the other. That is usually the better starting discipline.
- Reduce the scope to one message or task. A first project does not need multiple pages, a full identity system, or a series of scenes. Pick one message for a graphic, one primary task for an interface, or one idea for an animation.
- Choose software after the scope is clear. Tool choice should follow the type of project and the skills it requires, not dictate what you make. Adobe makes this project-first recommendation in its overview of design tool categories (Adobe Creative Cloud India).
- Set a finish line. Define what counts as complete before you begin. For example: the poster communicates its event details at a glance; the landing page makes the next action obvious; the loop communicates one idea without needing an explanation. A clear finish line helps prevent a small exercise from turning into an unfinished portfolio-sized project.
Choose graphic design for a single composed visual
Graphic design is the most direct fit when the project’s main output is a still image. A poster or social graphic gives a beginner a contained space to practice visual hierarchy, typography, color, and layout. You can focus on the relationship between the message and its presentation without also designing navigation or timing a sequence.
What you will practice
- Hierarchy: Make the most important information noticeable first, then arrange supporting details in a useful order.
- Typography: Choose and arrange type so the words are legible and the tone suits the message.
- Color and image treatment: Use color and imagery to support the message rather than compete with it.
- Composition: Place elements so the design feels organized and the viewer can scan it.
A useful first brief is a one-page poster for a fictional event. Give it one headline, one date, one location, and one action such as “save the date.” Make the hierarchy work before adding decorative elements. When the design is complete, ask someone to look at it briefly and tell you what they noticed first and what the event is. That is a practical check of whether the visual communicates at a glance, not a formal usability test.

Choose web design for an interface and a user task
Choose web design when the project is meant to help someone find information or do something through a website or app interface. The design problem is not simply to make a screen attractive: a person needs to understand where they are, what information matters, and what action is available. Figma describes web design as involving visual, user-experience, and user-interface design, with interface elements supporting user goals (Figma’s web design guide).
What you will practice
- Audience and purpose: Identify who the page is for and what that person came to do.
- Information hierarchy: Put the information in an order that helps the visitor understand the page and make a decision.
- Navigation and interface elements: Make it apparent where a person can go and what controls or actions are available.
- Readability and action clarity: Make the content easy to follow and the primary next step easy to identify.
A manageable exercise is a one-page landing page for a fictional community event. Start by listing the visitor’s likely questions: what is happening, when and where it is, and how to take part. Arrange the page to answer those questions, then make one primary action clear. A small clickable prototype can demonstrate how someone would move through a key interaction without expanding the exercise into a complete multi-page product.
Figma says its design tools support creating, sharing, and testing designs for websites, mobile apps, and other digital products (Figma Help Center). Its learning resources also address design fundamentals as well as the tools (Figma design resources). These are examples of available capabilities and learning material; the choice of a first project does not depend on choosing a particular tool.
Choose animation when motion carries the idea
Animation is the right starting point when timing, movement, or sequence is part of the communication—not merely an effect added to a finished static design. If the idea depends on an object changing, an element appearing in a particular order, or a title unfolding over time, motion is doing real work.

What you will practice
- Timing: Decide how long a change takes and when it should happen.
- Movement: Choose how an element enters, leaves, or changes position.
- Sequence: Order events so the viewer can follow the idea.
- Purpose: Check whether the motion clarifies the message or simply adds activity.
For a first exercise, make a short looping motion graphic or animated title that communicates one idea. Limit it to a small number of elements and one clear change. For example, a title might appear in stages to emphasize a word; the sequence should help the viewer understand the message rather than make them wait for decoration. Adobe identifies motion-graphics software as a category for animated content such as logo animations, explainers, app demos, and video intros (Adobe Creative Cloud India).
Keep the first project small enough to finish
Scope is part of the decision. Each extra page, screen, message, or scene introduces new choices. The first project is most useful when it lets you complete the central design problem and inspect the result, rather than when it tries to represent an entire profession.
| If you choose… | Keep the first version to… | Finish by checking… |
|---|---|---|
| Graphic design | One poster or social graphic and one main message | Can a viewer identify the main point and find the supporting details? |
| Web design | One landing page or a small prototype around one task | Can a visitor understand the page and identify the next action? |
| Animation | One short loop, title, or motion idea | Does the movement and timing make the message easier to follow? |
These are beginner project suggestions, not assignments prescribed by the software providers. They keep the work focused on the skills that distinguish each path. If you finish early, improve the first version before expanding it: adjust the visual hierarchy, clarify the page’s primary action, or refine the timing of the loop. Adding a second page or scene is not automatically an improvement.

Once the deliverable and scope are settled, look for a resource that teaches the capability you need next. A beginner who has chosen a static graphic may benefit more from instruction on typography and composition than from a broad tour of every design application. Someone making an interface should look for help with fundamentals as well as tool controls. Someone making motion should choose a tool category intended for animated content.

Common wrong turns to avoid
Choosing a tool before you know what you are making
A software menu can make every project appear like a software problem. It is not. Decide whether you are making a composed image, an interface, or a sequence first; then select a tool that supports that work. This avoids beginning with a technique simply because a tool makes it easy to try.
Making the first project too broad
“Design a whole app” or “create a full animated brand” contains many separate decisions. Reduce it to one key screen, one message, or one motion idea. A narrow scope lets you practice the relevant discipline and reach a finished result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adding motion when a static design already communicates
Motion should earn its place. If movement does not explain a change, establish a sequence, or support the message, it may distract from the communication. A still image is a better fit when the message is fully understandable without time or movement.
Best Value
Treating a page as a poster
A web page has a person trying to find something or act. A strong composition can help, but it does not replace decisions about content order, navigation, readability, and the next action. Keep the visitor’s task in view while shaping the screen.
Confusing a course’s length with an outcome
A listed duration or lesson count tells you what the course page says about the course, not how quickly you will learn or what quality of work you will produce. Use a course to support a focused exercise and judge progress by whether you can make and improve the intended artifact.
A practical way to review your first result
Review the project against its purpose, not against every skill in the discipline. Use the appropriate questions for the artifact you chose:
- For a graphic: What is noticed first? Is the message clear at a glance? Are the words and images supporting the same point?
- For an interface: Can a visitor tell what the page is for? Is the information in a helpful order? Is the main action apparent?
- For an animation: Is the sequence understandable? Does the timing feel intentional? Does movement contribute meaning or appeal?
Ask one person to look at the finished work and describe what they think it is for. Their response can reveal whether your intended message or task is visible. Treat the response as feedback on that particular artifact, not as a verdict on your ability or a substitute for broader user research.
After reviewing, make one focused revision. Changing several things at once makes it harder to tell which change improved the result. A deliberate second pass—one adjustment to hierarchy, information order, or timing—turns the first project into a learning cycle rather than a one-off exercise.
