Choose a monochrome laser if you mostly print text and often print in regular batches. For a home office with mixed needs, compare specific models: the right choice depends on your print mix, workload, supply costs, and required features—not just the printer’s purchase price.
How inkjet and laser printers work
Inkjet printers spray liquid ink onto paper through small nozzles. Laser printers use powdered toner to form an image that is transferred to paper and fused with heat. These different processes help explain their typical strengths, but they do not make every printer in a category equivalent.

| Your main use | Start by considering | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Black-and-white reports, forms, contracts, or other text printed regularly or in batches | Monochrome laser | Printer and toner prices, toner yield, speed, automatic duplexing, paper capacity, and whether you need scanning or copying |
| Photos, colorful schoolwork, graphics, or varied household printing | Color inkjet | Color needs, ink price and yield, photo-paper support, borderless printing if needed, and multifunction features |
| Occasional printing | Compare cartridge inkjet, tank inkjet, and laser options against your expected use | How long the printer may sit idle, how ink behaves after idle periods, and supply costs over the time you expect to own it |
| Regular mixed home-office jobs | Compare a business inkjet all-in-one with a monochrome laser, depending on how much color you print | Monthly volume, color share, scanning and copying, duplexing, speed, paper handling, footprint, and model-specific costs |
These are starting points, not guarantees about every model. A color laser may suit some color-document workflows, while a monochrome laser cannot print color. Verify the specific printer’s output and features against the jobs you actually have.

How to compare total ownership cost
A low purchase price does not necessarily mean a low-cost printer to own. Compare the device price, replacement supplies and their yields, your expected workload, and any maintenance over the period you expect to keep the printer. Use current prices for the particular printer and supplies you are considering.
Cost per page is useful only if you know what it includes. HP’s cost-per-page explanation describes a basic calculation based on ink cost divided by pages produced, and notes that occasional use and drying can affect inkjet economics. A supplies-only cost-per-page figure does not include the original printer purchase, and an advertised figure may not reflect your mix of pages or idle time.

- ICON LCD – Print your basic documents with ease from the intuitive control panel
- PRINT SPEED – Up to 7.5 ppm black, 5.5 ppm color
Do not rely on a universal break-even page count or assume an ink-only estimate represents your total cost. Compare models using your own anticipated volume and the costs of compatible supplies for each exact model. Yields and prices can differ substantially between printers, even within the same technology category.
What to check for occasional printing
If you print infrequently, account for the time a printer may sit unused. Ink can dry during prolonged idle periods, which may affect an inkjet’s practical cost and upkeep. Compare the specific cartridge, tank, and laser models you are considering rather than treating all inkjets as alike.

Tank printers, cartridge printers, and laser printers use different supply systems. A manufacturer’s yield or cost example for one model does not establish what another printer will cost. Check the included and replacement supplies, their stated yields, and current prices for your candidate model.
Features that can decide a home-office purchase
- Scanning and copying: If you need these, compare multifunction models rather than assuming a printer includes them.
- Automatic duplexing: Check that the exact model supports automatic two-sided printing if that matters to your workflow.
- Connectivity: Verify wireless and mobile-printing support for the devices and operating systems you use.
- Paper handling: Check tray capacity and support for the paper sizes or media you need, including photo paper for photo printing.
- Speed and workload: Compare stated speed and suitability for your expected monthly volume and typical job size.
- Space: Check the printer’s dimensions and footprint, especially for a compact desk or shared work area.
For ink, toner, or photo paper, confirm compatibility with the exact printer model. Similar-looking supplies are not necessarily interchangeable.

A practical way to make the choice
- List what you print: Separate text documents, color graphics, and photos, and estimate how often each type comes up.
- Estimate your workload: Note how many pages you expect to print, whether jobs arrive in batches, and how long the printer might sit idle.
- Shortlist suitable models: Start with monochrome laser for regular text-heavy work, color inkjet for photos or varied color printing, and compare alternatives for mixed or occasional use.
- Compare ownership costs: Add the printer price to expected supply costs over your intended ownership period, using current model-specific prices and yields.
- Check must-have features: Confirm scanning, copying, duplexing, connectivity, paper handling, speed, and size on the exact models.
HP’s buyer guidance also frames the decision as whether you need a laser or inkjet printer; its comparison is a useful starting point, but the final decision should rest on the features and costs of the models available to you.
