Start with what you need the device to do
“E Ink notebook” describes more than one kind of product. Some devices center on handwriting and document work; others combine writing with a dedicated reading ecosystem. A general-purpose tablet can add handwriting to a broader set of apps and functions, but its stylus and software support depend on the exact model.

Write down your main tasks before comparing specifications:
- Class or meeting notes: Consider how you organize notebooks, search or convert handwriting, and move notes to other devices.
- Reading and annotation: Check whether you can read the books and documents you already use, and how notes and markups work within them.
- Journaling or sketching: Compare the available writing tools and whether color matters to you.
- Apps and multitasking: If you need particular apps or want to switch among several tablet tasks, a general-purpose tablet is the more natural category to investigate.
reMarkable describes its paper tablets as focused handwriting and reading tools, with no app store or web browser by design (reMarkable). Kindle Scribe, by contrast, combines notebooks with Kindle reading and writing in books and documents (Amazon Kindle Scribe). These are different workflows, even though both products use E Ink.

Compare the workflow, not just the screen technology
| What to compare | E Ink notebook | General-purpose tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Often designed around handwriting, reading, and document review; features vary by model. | Handwriting alongside a broader range of apps and tablet functions; confirm app and stylus support for the model. |
| Reading | Kindle Scribe supports Kindle reading and writing in books. Other E Ink devices have different document and reading workflows. | Reading apps may be available, depending on the tablet’s operating system and app support. |
| Writing and markup | Tools, color support, and how annotations work with documents differ by device. | Requires a compatible stylus and note-taking app; compatibility is model-specific. |
| Apps and distractions | Some models intentionally limit apps and browsing; sync and advanced features may have separate terms. | Typically the better fit when your work depends on app breadth or multitasking. |
| Total cost | Count the device, pen, cover, replacement tips, and any subscription. | Count the tablet, compatible stylus, cover, and any paid note-taking software. |
For general-purpose tablets, do not assume all models support the same stylus or apps. For example, Apple lists Pencil compatibility by iPad model and Pencil generation; check the exact iPad against Apple’s compatibility information before buying.
What the product examples show

Those details may suit someone who wants a dedicated writing and document device, but they do not establish that it will feel comfortable to every user or improve eye health. Accessory compatibility matters: reMarkable says the Paper Pro Marker is not compatible with reMarkable 2. Check the Paper Pro’s current software, Connect terms, and model-specific accessories before purchase.

iPad with Apple Pencil: handwriting within a broader tablet
An iPad may make sense when handwriting is only one part of what you need—for example, if your workflow also depends on other tablet apps. Pencil support is not universal across iPads: Apple’s chart identifies compatible Pencil models for particular iPad generations (Apple Pencil compatibility). Match the stylus to the exact tablet before comparing bundles or prices.

Think carefully about display and writing comfort
Screen measurements are useful for comparing specific models, but they do not prove that one device will reduce eye strain or feel better for you. Kindle Scribe’s listed display is 10.2 inches at 300 ppi with an adjustable front light; Paper Pro’s is 11.8 inches at 229 ppi with an adjustable reading light. These are manufacturer specifications for those named models, not a controlled comparison of comfort.

Include accessories and recurring software costs
Compare the complete setup rather than the device-only price. For an E Ink notebook, include its pen, cover or keyboard cover, replacement tips, and any subscription needed for features you expect to use. reMarkable says some cloud, app, and advanced features are part of its Connect subscription; its terms and accessory prices can change (reMarkable Paper Pro features and terms).
For a tablet, add the compatible stylus and cover, plus any paid note-taking app you plan to use. Check current prices and what is included with the exact model: historical comparisons are not a reliable guide to today’s cost.
Use this decision path
- List your essential tasks. Separate handwriting and document annotation from app use, multitasking, sketching, and reading.
- Check the reading workflow. Confirm that your preferred books and documents work the way you want. Kindle Scribe’s Kindle integration may matter if you already rely on that library.
- Test the writing and annotation approach. Compare the tools, color options, and document behavior on the specific devices you are considering.
- Verify compatibility. Match each stylus and accessory to the exact tablet or E Ink model and generation.
- Price the full setup. Add the pen, cover, replacement parts, apps, and recurring subscriptions you expect to need.
- Choose the category that fits your routine. Favor a focused E Ink device for a dedicated writing-and-reading workflow; favor a general-purpose tablet when broader apps and tablet functions are essential.
How to interpret reviews and comfort claims
A Tom’s Guide comparison reviewer described Paper Pro’s writing and document annotation as more tactile and enjoyable, and highlighted the 2024 Kindle Scribe’s Kindle library integration. Those are that reviewer’s impressions, not a universal result or a controlled performance test; the review also discussed prices at the time, which should not be treated as current (Tom’s Guide comparison).
