How to Choose Between a Windows Laptop and a Mac for Everyday Use

Start with required apps and devices, then compare the exact laptop configurations and workflows that fit your everyday use.

Choose the laptop that supports the apps, devices, and work routines you actually rely on—not the one that fits a broad Windows-or-Mac stereotype. Check required software and school or workplace rules first; then compare exact laptop configurations, ports, and battery evidence. Microsoft 365 for home supports Windows 11 and one of the three most recent macOS versions, so ordinary Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote use does not by itself require Windows. Other apps and features may have different requirements.

Start with the things that could rule out a platform

Before weighing design or brand preference, make a short list of anything the laptop must work with: work or school software, specialist equipment, printers, monitors, storage devices, docks, and any required account or device-management setup. Ask the software publisher, employer, or school about the exact app, feature, operating-system version, and policy—not just whether it “works on Mac” or “works on Windows.”

  • Choose a compatible Windows laptop if a required app, peripheral, or managed-device policy specifically requires Windows.
  • Consider a Mac if your required apps support macOS and you would benefit from Apple-device workflows.
  • Verify the exact laptop for hardware compatibility. Microsoft notes that feature-specific hardware requirements can exceed Windows 11’s minimum operating-system requirements.

Microsoft 365 for home lists Windows 11 for Windows PCs and one of the three most recent macOS versions for Macs. Its requirements page specifies platform-specific hardware requirements as well. That support applies to the products and requirements listed there; do not assume it guarantees every Microsoft product or feature works identically. Check Microsoft 365 system requirements and the current requirements from publishers of other essential software.

For business, education, or government use, confirm the exact app, licensing, and organization policy. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 requirements for business, education, and government cover a broader set of services, including Project, Visio, and Power BI. For the perpetual Office suite, Microsoft’s Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 requirements list Windows 11 for Windows and Apple silicon or Intel processors for Mac on supported recent macOS releases. Those pages describe their named products, not every workplace app or policy.

Check what Windows 11 requires—and what those minimums mean

Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements include a processor of at least 1 GHz with two or more cores from Microsoft’s approved CPU list, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a high-definition display larger than 9 inches diagonally. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup. See Microsoft’s current Windows 11 specifications and requirements before buying.

These are eligibility minimums, not recommendations for a comfortable everyday configuration. A laptop that meets an operating-system floor may still be a poor fit for your apps, files, or multitasking. Check the requirements of your own software and compare the memory and storage in the specific configuration you plan to buy. Requirements can change.

Decide whether Apple’s device connections matter to you

If you already use an iPhone or iPad, consider whether Apple’s documented Continuity features would simplify tasks you do regularly. They include AirDrop for transferring files, Handoff for continuing tasks, Universal Clipboard for copying and pasting between devices, Continuity Camera for using an iPhone as a camera or microphone, and Sidecar for using an iPad as a second display. These are practical reasons to prefer a Mac when the relevant features fit your routine, not automatic advantages for every buyer.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Each feature has its own compatibility requirements. Some require Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and setup commonly involves signing in to the same Apple Account. Check Apple’s current Continuity feature and device requirements for the devices and tasks you have in mind.

Compare complete configurations, not brand names

Windows laptops come from multiple manufacturers and vary widely by model and configuration, so a single Windows-versus-Mac price comparison would be misleading. Compare current options available in your market with equivalent needs in mind: purchase price, memory, storage, screen, included software, ports, and any adapter or dock you would need. Also compare size and weight if you carry the laptop often.

Ports are easy to overlook. As a model-specific example, Apple’s specifications for the 13-inch MacBook Air M4 (2025) list 16 GB unified memory in the specified base configuration, storage starting at 256 GB, and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports. That describes this model and generation, not all Macs. If your equipment uses USB-A, HDMI, or an SD card, check the exact laptop’s ports and include a compatible hub or dock if needed. Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications give the details for the cited model.

Treat battery figures as model-specific estimates

Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use for the 13-inch MacBook Air M4 (2025). These are Apple’s “up to” estimates for that particular model, not independent head-to-head results against a Windows laptop. Real-world battery life varies with the workload and setup. For a fair comparison, look for independent tests of the exact models using similar workloads, or compare manufacturers’ test conditions rather than treating headline hours as directly equivalent.

Do not assume a Mac can replace a Windows PC through virtualization

Microsoft describes Windows 365 Cloud PCs and specified Parallels Desktop versions as routes to using Windows 11 on M-series Macs. It also warns that Windows on Arm has limitations for some hardware, apps, and games, including software that relies on DirectX 12; some nested-virtualization experiences are unsupported. These details can depend on Mac chip and software version, so check Microsoft’s current guidance for using Windows 11 with Apple M-series Macs, plus the requirements from the publishers of your app and devices.

Microsoft says, “Windows 11 runs best on a PC designed for Windows.” That is Microsoft’s compatibility guidance, not an independent performance comparison. If a required Windows workflow is central to your day, confirm it works in the exact Windows-on-Mac setup before treating virtualization as a substitute for a Windows laptop.

Use this decision checklist

  1. Write down non-negotiables. List required apps, specific app features, peripherals, and any school or employer device policy.
  2. Confirm compatibility. Check current requirements with each software or hardware publisher and verify any managed-device rules with the organization.
  3. Identify useful integrations. If you use Apple devices, decide whether AirDrop, Handoff, Universal Clipboard, Continuity Camera, or Sidecar would materially help your routine.
  4. Compare exact models. Match the configurations to your needs for memory, storage, screen, ports, size, and any required adapters or dock.
  5. Check ongoing support and mobility. Verify support for the exact operating-system version, laptop model, and required apps. For battery and portability, compare exact-model measurements and equivalent test conditions rather than brand-level claims.
