How to Choose Between a PC and Console for Upcoming Games

The best choice depends on the games you want, their confirmed platforms, your complete setup cost and how you prefer to play.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the games you most want to play: check each title’s officially announced platforms, then compare the full cost and setup of the compatible options. A PC is a stronger fit if your priority games are coming to PC and you want a configurable computer; a console is a straightforward fit if your shortlist is supported there and its standard setup suits how you play. There is no universal winner on price or performance.

1. Check your priority games first

Make a short list of the upcoming games you are most likely to buy. For each one, confirm its announced platforms and release date on the developer’s or publisher’s official page. A game calendar can help you discover releases, but it is not the final authority for a purchase decision.

  1. Write down your must-play titles. Separate games you intend to buy from titles you would only try if they are available.
  2. Check each title’s official listing. Look for the platform list and date, and confirm that a PC version has actually been announced rather than assuming it will follow a console release.
  3. Use calendars as discovery tools. GamesComingOut.com’s 2026 release calendar covers PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC. GamesRadar’s release roundup is another secondary starting point. Verify decision-critical details with the publisher; EA’s Coming Soon page illustrates how a publisher can list dates and platforms for its own games.
  4. Recheck before buying. Dates and platform plans for unreleased games can change. Confirm the listing again when you are ready to purchase.

If several of your must-play games are announced for only one platform, that is a more useful signal than a broad claim that one type of hardware is best. If your list is split, move on to the whole setup and the way you want to play.

2. Compare the complete cost, not just the main device

There is no established universal cost winner between PC and console. Prices depend on where you live, which hardware you choose, what you already own, and which games and services you expect to use. Compare current local prices for the complete setup you would actually need.

  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT 4GB Graphics | 1x HDMI | 1x DisplayPort
  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • The PC or console model and its storage or media configuration.
  • A display, controller, keyboard, mouse, headset or other peripherals only if you do not already have what you need.
  • The games on your shortlist, using their current prices and the editions you intend to buy.
  • Any subscription costs that matter for your planned multiplayer access or game-library use; check the current terms for your region and plan.

A monitor or television you already own may make either option less expensive for you than a comparison based on buying every component new. Similarly, include only subscriptions and peripherals relevant to your own use rather than treating them as mandatory for everyone.

3. Match a PC to the games you expect to play

With a PC, the important comparison is between a game’s published system requirements and the exact components in the computer you are considering. Check requirements for each priority game, including the processor, graphics hardware, memory and storage where listed. Do not assume that a computer will run an unreleased title unless its official requirements support that conclusion.

If a game has not published requirements yet, you cannot make a confirmed hardware match for it. You can wait for those details, or make a choice based on the games whose requirements are available and your willingness to accept uncertainty about the others. For either PC or console, consult game-specific performance information rather than inferring performance from the platform name alone.

4. Check console model, media format and library access

Console versions can differ in storage and disc support, so identify the exact model rather than comparing only by console family. As described on Sony’s PS5 product page accessed October 5, 2026, the listed PS5 console has 1 TB of storage and Blu-ray disc play, while the PS5 Digital Edition has 825 GB of storage and no included disc drive. Sony also says PS5 consoles are backward compatible with PS4 games. Check the current regional product listing before buying, since configurations and availability can change.

Sony’s PS5 page also states that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only; discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. If physical copies matter to you, verify that notice is still current and consider how it affects the particular games you plan to buy.

For either platform, consider whether your existing library carries over, how your account and storefront affect access, and what current subscription-library terms say about the games you want. Do not assume that a game included in a library today will remain available indefinitely.

5. Decide which setup fits your play habits

Once game availability and cost are clear, compare the practical details that are personal rather than universal advantages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Where you play: a desk setup, a living-room screen, or a need to move the device between places.
  • How you control games: controller, keyboard and mouse, or a preference that varies by title.
  • Who you play with: the platforms your friends use and whether the specific games you want support the multiplayer setup you expect.
  • Accessibility: check the options in your priority games and the controls or system features available on the exact hardware you are considering.
  • Other computer use: a PC may serve work, study or creative needs as well as gaming, if those uses matter to your decision.
  • What you already own: an existing display, peripherals, compatible games or a platform-specific library can change your personal total and convenience.

6. Make the choice with a simple decision rule

  1. Choose PC if your priority titles are announced for PC, you are comfortable matching components to published requirements, and the flexibility or other computer uses justify the setup for you.
  2. Choose console if your priority titles are supported there, you want a standard hardware setup, and the model’s media format, library access and play style fit your needs.
  3. Pause before committing if a must-play game has no confirmed platform or requirements, or if the total depends on prices or subscription terms you have not checked. Revisit the official game listings and current local costs closer to purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
