Compare the current Mac mini and Mac Studio tiers
Apple announced the current lineup on September 22, 2026. The US starting prices below are launch-update prices before optional configuration, taxes, or discounts; prices in other countries differ. Apple says the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra and 512GB unified memory is expected in late October 2026.

Prices and intended-use descriptions are from Apple’s September 22, 2026 availability announcement. Memory ceilings, display counts, and connectivity are from Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio technical specifications. These are configuration ceilings, not a claim that every configuration performs alike or offers the best value. Verify the exact display resolution and refresh-rate combination for your setup.
Start with memory and project size
Unified memory is a practical dividing line because it is shared across the system rather than upgraded later like a typical desktop RAM kit. Consider the largest project you actively work on, plus the applications, browser tabs, and other tasks you tend to keep open at the same time.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
- If that workload fits within 32GB, the M6 mini remains an option.
- If it exceeds 32GB but fits within 64GB, compare the M5 Pro mini with the Studio tiers; the mini may still be sufficient if its display and port limits also work.
- If your workload needs more than 64GB, the current Studio options are the relevant tiers: M5 Max supports up to 128GB, and M5 Ultra up to 512GB.
Choose memory for the actual project, not merely because an application is described as “pro.” Apple’s Mac mini specifications and Mac Studio specifications list the current model limits and configuration options.
Check display count and exact monitor modes
Both Mac mini tiers support up to three external displays; either Studio tier supports up to eight. That count does not guarantee that every combination of resolution and refresh rate will work: supported modes depend on the Mac model and how displays are connected. Compare Apple’s specifications with the resolution, refresh rate, and connection type of each monitor you plan to use before buying.

Inventory ports, networking, and expansion
The M6 mini has Thunderbolt 4. The M5 Pro mini and both Studio tiers use Thunderbolt 5. Studio adds more built-in expansion, including USB-A, an SDXC slot, HDMI 2.1, and standard 10Gb Ethernet. The M6 and M5 Pro minis can be configured with 10Gb Ethernet, so compare that option’s configured cost with the price of moving up to Studio rather than assuming the mini cannot support it.

Also count the peripherals that must stay connected: fast external storage, card readers, displays, and adapters can shape the total setup. Apple identifies Thunderbolt 5 as an option for fast external storage with Studio, but an external drive or display is not included in the desktop’s starting price. Check the exact port layout and configuration on Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio pages.

Which Mac is better for video editing and other demanding work?
There is no single winner for every editing workflow. The M5 Pro mini is positioned for demanding video and game-development work, while Apple describes Studio as suited to professional 3D, motion graphics, and AI. For video editing, the more useful decision points are the memory needed by your projects, the number and modes of your displays, and the storage and other devices you need connected.
Apple’s announcement includes “up to” performance comparisons against specified older systems, based on selected tests Apple conducted in July 2026. Those claims are Apple’s comparisons, not independent benchmarks, and do not establish how a matched mini and Studio configuration compare in your own software or workflow. Buy the Studio for a requirement its extra memory, connectivity, or compute options address—not just because a task has a professional label.

Compare the complete setup cost
Start with the model that clears your requirements, then price its needed memory, storage, and Ethernet configuration. Add any external storage, displays, and adapters you need. A starting price is not the configured price, and the Studio’s higher entry price may be justified when it replaces several constraints at once; it is harder to justify if the mini already covers your workload and connections.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor context, Apple’s September 22, 2026 US starting prices run from $899 for the M6 mini to $5,499 for the M5 Ultra Studio. Configuration options change the cost, and the available source pages do not provide a fixed total for a custom setup. Treat the listed prices as dated launch-update figures, not permanent prices.

A quick decision checklist
- Choose Mac mini when its memory ceiling covers your combined workload, three displays are enough, and its ports meet your needs.
- Choose Mac Studio when you need more than 64GB of unified memory, support for more than three displays, more built-in expansion, or a Studio-tier compute option.
- Compare the M5 Pro mini and M5 Max Studio carefully when either could handle your work: weigh the mini’s lower starting price against Studio’s higher memory ceiling, display capacity, and connectivity.
- Check the exact configuration for memory, storage, Ethernet, port layout, and display modes before placing an order.
