Take the local-road detour only when current information shows a worthwhile, credible time advantage and the route is suitable for your vehicle and trip. Compare expected end-to-end time, predictability, safety and road conditions, navigation complexity, and access to services—not distance alone. If the saving is small or unstable, staying on the Interstate is often the more sensible choice.
What makes one route the better choice?
There is no universal number of minutes that makes a detour worthwhile. The decision depends on your priorities and the conditions on both routes. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) notes that some travelers choose the fastest route, while others favor less hectic or safer travel conditions. [FHWA traveler choice]

Compare the routes from where you are now to the same destination. Include the time to reach the exit, progress through local-road controls and queues, and rejoin the Interstate. A shorter distance—or a map alert showing a queue—does not by itself prove the alternate will get you there sooner.

| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Expected end-to-end time | Current estimates for both routes, including access to and from the Interstate and delays at local intersections. | A short highway delay can be offset by slow surface-road progress, signals, or the time required to re-enter the highway. |
| Reliability | Whether the delay is a recurring queue or a newer incident, work zone, closure, or weather disruption; watch whether estimates are changing. | A predictable trip can be preferable to a slightly faster estimate that is more likely to change. FHWA defines travel-time reliability as “the degree of certainty and predictability in travel times on the transportation system.” [FHWA travel-time reliability] |
| Road suitability and safety | Capacity, pavement, grades, stop signs, signalized intersections, unprotected left turns, access limits, and restrictions that apply to your vehicle. | A promising time estimate does not make a local road appropriate for every driver, vehicle, or condition. FHWA’s alternate-route criteria include these types of considerations, particularly in work-zone and incident planning. [FHWA alternate-route criteria] |
| Complexity and familiarity | Number of turns, route changes, and how clearly the route rejoins the Interstate. | An unfamiliar path may demand more attention and be harder to follow, especially if traffic or weather is poor. |
| Services and trip needs | Whether the route provides fuel, rest stops, food, or other services you need. | A route that supports the needs of your trip may be preferable even if it is not the shortest. |
How to make the decision
- Identify what is causing the delay. Use current transportation information or a navigation app to check whether it is routine congestion, a crash, roadwork, or weather. If available, check the expected duration and whether the disruption is clearing. FHWA identifies traffic and incident information, including alternate-route information, as useful to travelers weighing a diversion. [FHWA traveler information]
- Compare full-trip estimates. Check the estimated time from your current location to the destination on each route. Make sure the detour includes getting off the Interstate, local-road controls and queues, and getting back on. Do not treat distance alone as a time comparison.
- Check that the local route fits your trip. Review traffic, road conditions, turns, stop controls, weather, and any restrictions relevant to your vehicle. A route that is unsuitable or difficult to navigate is not a good trade for a modest time saving.
- Weigh predictability against the arrival deadline. If you need to arrive on time, favor the route whose travel time seems more dependable. A recurring, well-understood queue may be easier to plan around than an incident or changing conditions.
- Confirm the path before exiting. If the route is unfamiliar, review its turn-by-turn directions, exit, re-entry point, and any reported closures. FHWA describes traveler-information websites, apps, and some standalone navigation devices as ways to access traffic and incident information. [FHWA navigation and traveler information]
What historical congestion figures can—and cannot—tell you
FHWA reported 2015 network averages of a Travel Time Index of 1.32 for Interstate highways and 1.37 for other freeways and expressways. The index compared average peak-period travel time with free-flow travel time. FHWA also reported Planning Time Index averages of 2.52 for Interstates and 2.98 for other freeways and expressways; these represented the planning time needed to arrive on time 95 percent of the time, relative to free-flow travel time. Check a state or local transportation information source or a navigation app for conditions on both routes. Live congestion, incidents, closures, weather, and estimated times vary by location and time; the best choice depends on your origin, destination, vehicle, and current conditions. Treat a detour as worthwhile when the information supports a meaningful advantage and the road is suitable. If the reported saving is marginal or keeps changing, or the local route adds difficult turns, poor conditions, or other risks, remaining on the Interstate is reasonable. This is a practical rule of thumb, not a published FHWA minute-based formula.
