Start with the tablet-and-pen pairing

Compare the drawing apps and workflow you actually use
Make a shortlist of the drawing apps you rely on, then confirm that each is available on the tablet’s operating system and has the features you need there. Samsung’s October 2, 2026 US announcement names creativity apps, while Apple’s Pencil page mentions Goodnotes 6 and Procreate. These examples are not a complete, current comparison of app availability or feature parity across platforms.
For drawing, check the app’s brush and canvas tools, file formats, and how you move work to the computer or cloud service you use. For notes, consider handwriting recognition, organization, PDF markup, export, and syncing. A familiar app on one platform may matter more to your daily workflow than a pen feature you would rarely use.

Consider how you take and manage handwritten notes
Samsung documents handwriting with the S Pen in Samsung Notes, including the ability to alter or move handwriting and convert it to text. Apple describes Apple Pencil use for note-taking and document markup. Those manufacturer descriptions establish supported uses, not identical behavior or a measured quality advantage between the two systems.

Choose a screen size for your work and carrying habits
Screen size affects how much canvas or page is visible and how easy the tablet is to carry, but the right balance depends on where you work. Samsung’s October 2, 2026 US announcement specifies a 14.6-inch display for the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra. Apple’s Pencil compatibility information covers iPad Pro, Air, and mini families, so compare the dimensions of the exact iPad models you are considering rather than treating the lineup as one size.
Think about whether you mostly draw at a desk, take notes in class or meetings, or carry the tablet throughout the day. A larger display may suit expansive canvases or split-screen work; a smaller device may be easier to transport. These are practical trade-offs, not a universal comfort ranking.

Calculate the complete setup cost
Compare the tablet, the compatible stylus if it is not included, any paid apps or subscriptions you need, storage tier, and accessories such as a case or keyboard. Do not compare a tablet-only price with a bundle that includes a pen and call it a like-for-like deal.
