Auracast lets a compatible audio source broadcast sound to multiple nearby Bluetooth receivers, so listeners can join a public TV, tour, or venue announcement without pairing headphones one-to-one. It is a useful feature to consider when buying headphones, especially for shared or assistive listening—but it works only when the headphones, a way to select the broadcast, and the source’s transmitter are all compatible.
What Auracast does
Auracast is Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast audio, specified through the Bluetooth SIG’s Public Broadcast Profile (PBP). Instead of creating a conventional one-to-one Bluetooth audio connection, a compatible transmitter broadcasts one or more audio streams that multiple compatible receivers can join. The Bluetooth SIG describes the system and its requirements in its Auracast overview and FAQ.

Auracast has three practical parts: the source that transmits audio, an interface for finding and selecting a broadcast, and a receiver such as compatible headphones. In the documented workflow, an Auracast assistant scans for broadcast advertisements, lets the listener choose one, and gives the receiver the information needed to join. The assistant may be a phone, smartwatch, hearing-aid remote, or software interface, depending on the product and implementation. See the Bluetooth SIG’s description of the Auracast workflow.

- Transmitter: sends the broadcast. A pair of receiving headphones cannot make a TV or venue transmit Auracast on its own.
- Assistant: helps the listener discover and select a stream, then passes joining information to the receiver.
- Receiver: plays the selected broadcast. A product listed as a receiver is not necessarily also an assistant or transmitter.
Where Auracast can be useful
Auracast can let listeners hear audio from a public TV, tour guide, or public-address system through their own compatible headphones or hearing devices. A venue could offer separate language streams or send audio from silent screens. These are possible uses, not a guarantee that a nearby venue has installed the system. The Bluetooth SIG outlines these applications in its Auracast use-case information.
The technology is particularly relevant to assistive listening in places such as airports, cinemas, lecture halls, conference centers, and houses of worship. The Bluetooth SIG reported early deployments in its August 2025 paper: three Sydney Opera House venues deployed Auracast in March 2025; Bristol Temple Meads tested it for station audio and announcements; and Birmingham Hippodrome used it for show audio and audio description. These examples show that deployments have begun, not that service is common everywhere. The examples appear in the SIG’s August 2025 market and deployment paper.

What to check before buying Auracast headphones
Confirm support for the exact model
Do not use a Bluetooth version number as proof of Auracast support. The Bluetooth SIG says a product needs relevant features introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2 and support for the Public Broadcast Profile; implementation also depends on the product. Check the exact model, generation, market, and firmware in the manufacturer’s specifications and the Bluetooth SIG’s product information. The SIG notes that its listings are informational and that availability can change.
Check how you will discover and select broadcasts
Find out whether your headphones work with an assistant you already have, such as a supported phone or other interface, or require another method. A receiver’s compatibility alone does not establish that you can conveniently scan for and select broadcasts.

Check for a compatible transmitter where you plan to listen
Your headphones need a source that actually broadcasts Auracast. If you mainly want the feature at home, check whether your TV or audio source can transmit it, or whether a compatible external transmitter can connect to that source.
Weigh it against everyday headphone needs
Auracast is one feature, not a measure of overall headphone quality. Compare fit, sound, noise cancellation, battery life, price, and compatibility with your phone or other devices. The Bluetooth SIG’s product directory lists roles and examples; it does not provide a controlled performance comparison or a universal ranking.

Headphone examples and how to interpret them
Examples identified as Auracast receivers include the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Creative Zen Hybrid Pro. The Bluetooth SIG’s August 2025 paper also lists earbuds including Creative Aurvana Ace and Ace 2, Jabra Elite 8 and Elite 10, LG xboom Buds, Panasonic Technics EAH-AZ100, Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro, Buds3 and Buds3 Pro, and Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4. These are examples of listed support, not a recommendation or an independent performance test. Confirm support for the specific product variant and current firmware before buying, because product information and availability can change. Can older headphones or sources get Auracast through an update?
Sometimes, but not automatically. Whether an existing device can be upgraded depends on its underlying capabilities and the manufacturer’s product strategy; the Bluetooth SIG notes that some product categories, including TVs, may require new hardware. An external transmitter can add broadcast capability to some TVs and other sources, but compatibility depends on the source connection and the transmitter design. The SIG’s August 2025 paper gives examples of USB dongles, 3.5 mm adapters, dedicated TV streamers, and portable microphones, including Creative BT-W6 and Avantree Voyager. Does Auracast have a listener limit or fixed range?
The Bluetooth SIG FAQ says an unlimited number of in-range receivers can join a broadcast. “Unlimited” describes the broadcast model, not unlimited distance: a receiver still has to be within range of the transmitter. Range depends on the transmitter and surroundings, so there is no single venue-wide distance to assume without specifications for the particular installation. See the SIG’s Auracast FAQ.
