Whether you need a third-party antivirus app depends first on your phone’s operating system, model, region, and the protection already available on it. For Android, compare current independent test results with the specific features you need—such as harmful-link blocking, anti-theft tools, or app-permission reviews—rather than treating one test score as a permanent winner. The evidence here supports an Android-focused comparison; it does not establish whether a conventional antivirus app is useful on iPhone.
Do you need antivirus on your phone?
There is no single answer for every phone. On Android, start by checking whether built-in protection is available and enabled on your particular device, then decide whether you need additional functions that it does not provide. Your choice may differ if you install apps from outside Google Play, want extra web protection, need anti-theft features, or want help reviewing app permissions.

Availability varies by device, Android version, and region. AV-Comparatives describes Google Play Protect as built-in malware protection on supported, certified Android devices and says it checks apps from Google Play and third-party sources. The report notes that Google apps and services, including Play Protect, are typically unavailable on modified systems such as HarmonyOS, FireOS, or LineageOS and in mainland China. If you use an iPhone, this evidence does not establish which third-party security functions are available or whether a conventional antivirus app is useful. Check Apple’s current official platform-security and App Store documentation before making an iPhone-specific decision.

What should you compare in a mobile security app?
Malware scanning is only one possible function. Compare the features against the risk you are actually trying to address; names and bundles vary by product and platform.
- Malware protection: How the product performed in recent independent tests, including false positives.
- Harmful-link or web protection: Whether it addresses suspicious links or unsafe browsing, if that is a concern for you.
- Anti-theft tools: Whether the app offers functions relevant to a lost or stolen device.
- App audit and privacy checks: Whether it helps review apps or their permissions, and whether those checks suit your needs.
- Compatibility and availability: Whether the specific app and features support your phone, Android version, and region.
- Usability, permissions, and privacy: Whether the app is understandable to use, what access it requests, and what its privacy disclosures say.
- Cost and renewal terms: Check the current price, included features, and renewal conditions directly with the vendor; the test results below do not compare prices or subscription terms.
What do the Android test results show?
AV-TEST: July 2026
AV-TEST evaluated 12 Android mobile-security products using current product versions and default settings. It assessed protection, performance, and usability, scoring each category out of 6 points (18 overall); a total of 10 or more earns its seal. Bitdefender Mobile Security 3.3 scored 6/6 in each category. So did Avast Antivirus & Security 26.11, AVG Antivirus Free 26.6, Avira Antivirus Security 7.32, F-Secure Total Security & VPN 26.5, Kaspersky Premium for Android 11.132, McAfee Mobile Security 10.6, Norton 360 26.11, Protected.net TotalAV Mobile Security 3.1, Sophos Intercept X for Mobile 9.8, and Google Play Protect 46.8. A tie at 18 points does not identify a universal best app. This result records performance in specific categories, for products and versions tested in July 2026; it does not compare their prices, feature bundles, privacy practices, device compatibility, or regional availability.
AV-Comparatives: Android 15, May 2025
AV-Comparatives tested products obtained from Google Play on Android 15. Its report, last revised June 10, 2025, says the malware test used 3,322 unique malicious applications collected shortly before testing and that a separate false-positive test used 500 clean apps. The protection rates and false-positive counts below belong to that test, not the July 2026 AV-TEST evaluation.

AV-Comparatives attributed Google Play Protect’s increased misses in this test to a product bug reported during testing. Treat that result as historical evidence about the tested version and conditions, not as a current Google score. More broadly, a test rate is not a guarantee against every real-world threat. The report found only a minor influence on battery life in its simulated daily-use scenario, while cautioning that mobile-use patterns vary; your experience may differ. How to choose an app for your phone
- Identify your setup. Confirm your operating system, phone model, Android version, and country or region.
- Name the problem you want to solve. Decide whether your main concern is sideloaded apps, malicious links, device loss, app permissions, or another specific need.
- Check built-in protection. Find out whether it is available and enabled on your device; do not assume that a modified Android-based system or every region includes Google services.
- Compare recent independent tests. Note the test date, product version, protection result, false positives, and performance or usability findings. Keep results from different tests separate.
- Verify feature fit and privacy. Check that the features you want work on your exact device and region. Review requested permissions and the vendor’s privacy disclosures.
- Check the purchase terms before paying. Confirm current cost, what is included, and renewal terms with the vendor. These test reports do not establish current prices.
- Try candidates one at a time. Avoid installing overlapping security apps without a clear reason. AV-Comparatives recommends building a shortlist from pros and cons and trying candidate products individually; products can change frequently.
Why a test winner is not a permanent recommendation
Independent tests answer a bounded question: how particular versions performed under specified conditions at a particular time. AV-TEST’s July 2026 results and AV-Comparatives’ May 2025 results are separate evaluations with different dates and methods, so their numbers should not be merged into one ranking. A strong malware result also cannot tell you whether an app’s features, permissions, privacy disclosures, compatibility, or renewal terms are right for you.
